Who We Are

The Rutherford Public Library Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 corporation led by a Board of Directors with close ties to the Rutherford Public Library Board of Trustees.

The Foundation and its Board operate independently from the Borough of Rutherford municipal governance. The Foundation exists solely to enhance and expand services provided by the library. Financial support from the Borough of Rutherford, the State of New Jersey, and other sources will continue and not be diminished by the existence of gifts generated by the Foundation.

Our Mission

The mission of the Rutherford Public Library Foundation is to develop a basis of continual financial support to ensure the library’s commitment to provide lifelong learning services to the community.

What is the Rutherford Public Library Foundation?

The Rutherford Public Library Foundation is an independent 501c3 fundraising arm of the Rutherford Public Library. The Foundation seeks private sector support for capital improvements, services, and programs that promote lifelong learning to the community. The Foundation funding complements the funding received from the borough for the operation of the library.

What is the Foundation’s relationship to the Library Board of Trustees?

The Library Board of Trustees handles the day-to-day governance of the library. The Foundation exists as a separate legal entity from the Board of Trustees. The Foundation’s sole goal is to raise funds to support the library’s mission in alignment with the Trustees’ strategic plan. Members of the Library Board of Trustees also sit on the Board of the Foundation.

How is the Foundation different from the Friends of the Library?

The Friends provide a modest and always welcome level of support for annual library programs such as children’s summer reading. The Foundation is dedicated to continuing the viability of the library for the future through substantial fundraising efforts and investment. Growth of the Foundation’s endowment will provide interest and dividend income that will ensure the long-term future of the Library and will fund capital improvement projects.

Is my donation tax deductible?

YES! The IRS has determined that your contribution to the Foundation, bequest, or securities transfer is exempt from the federal income tax under section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
