Our conventional wisdom about animal ethics, as embodied in the animal welfare position, is that ... more Our conventional wisdom about animal ethics, as embodied in the animal welfare position, is that animals are not things to whom we can have no moral obligations. Animals who are sentient, or subjectively aware, have a morally significant interest in not suffering. But, because they are not self-aware, they do not as an empirical matter have an interest in continuing to live. So we may use and kill animals as long as we do so ‘humanely’ and do not impose ‘unnecessary’ suffering on them. There are at least two serious problems with our conventional wisdom in this regard. First, because animals are chattel property, we undervalue or ignore their interests in not suffering. Second, we cannot justify the view that animals who are sentient do not have a morally significant interest in continuing to live. If animals are not things and matter morally, our institutionalized exploitation of them cannot be justified, and veganism is a moral imperative.

But more interesting is the way people reveal the influence of the times on their thinking. Haldane’s idealism for a Communist utopia is evident in many of the essays where he sees workers learning and using science in their jobs or as an avocation while they are still industrial workers. Some of the essays are striking because they are autobiographical and we learn about the pre-school Haldane going down a mineshaft with his father and becoming a coparticipant in experimentations on his own body. They are also striking because we do not know whether to admire Haldane’s courage in war or find it repellant (a sort of Hollywood macho image of what it means to be a real man) that he enjoyed killing others and willingly put himself at risk (and got wounded). Well worth reading are Haldane’s criticisms of eugenics in the essay, The Mathematics of Evolution, his advice for popular science writing in How to Write a Popular Scientific Article, his assessment of Darwin in Indian Perspective, and Inventions that Made Men Free. They illustrate his range of interests and his talent for connecting science to public understanding. Haldane is also very quotable. I picked up several statements worth using for future chapter introductions: “One certainly needs tradition, but if one has nothing else, a time comes when posterity copies every attribute of a great man except his greatness” (p. 222). Or how about: “It may be a law of nature that whenever conscious beings discover the sources of energy which would enable them to journey from one planet to another, they use them to destroy themselves” (p. 180). I share with Haldane the importance of communicating science to the general public. I hope some of the readers of this collection of essays will initiate science columns for their local newspapers. There is more to admire than fault in his sympathy for humanity and his hopes for a science that saves lives and tries to do as little harm to others as possible. Conventional wisdom on the matter of animal ethics in most Western countries is that although ani... more Conventional wisdom on the matter of animal ethics in most Western countries is that although animals have some moral value, they have less moral value than humans, and, therefore, it is acceptable to use animals for our purposes as long as we treat them 'humanely' and do not inflict 'unnecessary' suffering on them. This position is known as the animal welfare approach to animal ethics; it is the position that is most often promoted by large animal advocacy organisations in the US and Europe. Some of these organisations claim to promote animal welfare reform not as an end in itself, but as a means to the eventual abolition of animal use or, at least, the significant reduction of animal use. I have referred to this position as 'new welfarism'. Enquanto os benestarias sustentam que os interesses dos animais podem ser ignorados se as consequencias para os humanos justificarem isso, os que propoem os “direitos dos animais” sugerem um vies abolicionista, igualando-os aos humanos. Analisa que, se por um lado ambas se contrapoem por seus objetivos, ha autores que entendem que o bem estar animal e a unica maneira pratica de concretude dos direitos dos animais. Entretanto, a tese aqui defendida e a abordagem incremental para os direitos dos animais, a qual e realista e reconhece que estes sao seres sensiveis com valores inerentes, sem com isso representar uma completa ameaca ao status de propriedade dos animais.
