This context is chosen as, compared to developed countries, experiences in developing ones have remained under-researched in the transition studies literature. The study is informed by a biographical research approach, using qualitative longitudinal life (hi)story methods, with a view to revealing local transition patterns and the life events influencing these. The study identifies four different patterns reflecting the education-to-work transitions of young rural–urban migrants in Nepal. These patterns encompass different pathways involving education, migration, work and mandatory waiting periods. The analysis of these transition patterns highlights how migration for education and work from rural to urban settings, taken together with mandatory waiting periods, exert key influence on the overall life trajectories of young rural–urban migrants in Nepal’s capital.

It answers the research question “How do university teachers experience teaching in an Active Learning Classroom?”. In total, 14 teachers participated in a survey which was conducted before and after their courses in an ALC. Results show that, in line with their expectations, teachers experienced their courses in ALC to be more active. It seems that the ALC indeed stimulated teachers to implement more active learning activities in their course, although teachers indicate they have not yet fully utilized the ALC. Therefore, we conclude it would be worthwhile to provide continuous didactic and technological support to teachers when adopting ALC in universities.

Interviews were conducted in an industrial company, a municipality, and a shop, with women, men, and managers (N = 156, 38, and 39, respectively) seeking to determine the relationship between sexual harassment and work situation as characterized in terms of power balance between the sexes and interaction style. Norbert Elias's historical-sociological theory (Uber den Prozess der Zivilisation [The Civilizing Process; see IRPS No. 16/83c00199 and 83c00200], Baden-Baden: Suhrkamp, 1969 [1939]) was adopted as a theoretical framework, and a figurational-sociological perspective was constructed in which a work situation was viewed as a numerical figuration of power balance between men and women in a given situation and function distribution. This structural context was supplemented with a cultural context measured in terms of traditional/emancipatory interaction between men and women in a given work situation.

Aim The goal of this study was to explore how JOGG – the Dutch EPODE adaptation – might reduce overweight prevalence among children. Methods: To compare whether overweight prevalence was different in JOGG areas vs. non-JOGG areas, in long-term JOGG areas vs. short-term JOGG areas, and in low SES JOGG areas vs. middle/high SES JOGG areas, secondary anthropometric and personal data of 209,565 Dutch children were mapped onto publicly available JOGG data. Results: Findings showed that overweight prevalence decreased from 25.17% to 16.08% in JOGG-areas, and from 32.31% to 18.43% in long-term JOGG areas. However, when taking into account SES, the decrease in prevalence was mainly visible in low SES long-term JOGG areas. Conclusion: JOGG appeared to be successful in targeting areas where overweight was most p...

Respondents were adolescents in 22 secondary schools, randomly selected in 2 regions in the Netherlands. Of the 2808 students 512 (18%) reported unwanted sexual experiences at school in the past 12 months: 370 girls (72%) and 142 boys (28%). Using discriminant function analysis we

To... more The prevalence of child and adolescent obesity has been a major worldwide problem for decades. To stop the number of youth with overweight/obesity from increasing, numerous interventions focusing on improving children's weight status have been implemented. The growing body of research on weight-related interventions for youth has been summarized by several meta-analyses aiming to provide an overview of the effectiveness of interventions. Yet, the number of meta-analyses is expanding so quickly and overall results differ, making a comprehensive synopsis of the literature difficult. To tackle this problem, a meta-synthesis was conducted to draw informed conclusions about the state of the effectiveness of interventions targeting child and adolescent overweight. The results of the quantitative synthesis of 26 meta-analyses resulted in a standardized mean difference (SMD) of À0.12 (95%CI: À0.16, À0.08). Several moderator analyses showed that participant and intervention characteristics had little impact on the overall effect size. However, a moderator analysis distinguishing between obesity treatment and obesity prevention studies showed that obesity treatment interventions (SMD: À0.048, 95%CI: À0.60, À0.36) were significantly more effective in reducing body mass index than obesity prevention interventions (SMD: À0.08, 95%CI: À0.11, À0.06). Overall, the results of this meta-synthesis suggest that interventions result in statistically significant effects albeit of relatively little clinical relevance.

These grounds include the failure to recognise the multiple realities faced by young people, some of whom may already be sexually active. In the study reported on this paper, students' perceptions of relationships and sexual practices were analysed to obtain an understanding of how young people construct and negotiate their sexual agency in the context of abstinence-only messages provided in Ugandan secondary schools and at the wider community level. Ten in-depth interviews and six focus group discussions were conducted with students aged 15-19 years (N = 55) at an urban coeducational secondary school. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using grounded theory. Findings show that students engage in sexual activity despite their belief that contraception is ineffective and their fears for the consequences. Students' age, gender, financial capital and perceived sexual desire further increase risk and vulnerability. To improve their effectiveness, school-based sexuality education programmes should support students to challenge and negotiate structural factors such as gender roles and sociocultural norms that influence sexual practices and increase vulnerability and risk.

Over the course of one year, a total of 21 young people (age range 12-17.5) reported in longitudinal qualitative diaries their (1) everyday sexual experiences and (2) sex-related conversations with their parents. Using a mixed-methods approach, findings show that less sexually experienced participants reported greater avoidance of parent-child sex-related conversations than more experienced participants. The sex-related conversations of more experienced participants mainly concerned overt experiences in the form of everyday issues with their romantic partner, while the conversations of less experienced participants were characterised by more covert experiences such as opinions about romantic relationships in general. These results suggest that the degree to which young people feel comfortable talking about sexuality with their parents partly depends on when the conversation takes place during a young person's romantic and sexual development.

First, the sample, measures and four sub-projects are described. Second, hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine how key variables from the individual domain (impulsivity), parent domain (parentadolescent relationship quality), peer domain (involvement with peers) and media domain (time spent on social networking sites), and their interactions predict changes in the experience with sexual behaviour of adolescents across time. Results showed that higher levels of impulsivity, lower quality of relation with parents, more frequent involvement with peers and more time spent on social networking sites at baseline predicted increases in sexual experience of adolescents over a subsequent 1.5-year time period. No interaction effects among the domains were

Women daycare workers are blamed by mainstream media for frustrating boys' need for physical activity and adventure. In 2004 we conducted a study, involving 96 daycare workers in 36 daycare centers in a Dutch city. We addressed the research question whether the stereotypical representation of women's daycare work in the media is an adequate picture of these professionals' perceptions of their work in daycare. Findings indicate that the stereotypical images of women daycare workers in the media-debates do not resemble the personal qualities and professional characteristics that these daycare workers ascribe to themselves.

Utilizing the results of a survey conducted at a telecommunications company in 1997 (N ϭ 458), this study elaborates on the impact of organizational culture on the incidence of unwanted sexual behavior in the workplace. Drawing on organizational and gender theory, we proposed that three organizational variables would be related to the levels of reported experiences of unwanted sexual behavior. First, the social climate in the organization is important: respondents who are positive about the social climate in their workplace have reported experiencing fewer unwanted sexual behaviors than respondents who perceive their organizations as less socially oriented. Second, a relationship was found between gender-specific aspects of the organizational climate and the extent of unwanted sexual behavior: respondents who think that their department has a positive attitude toward the equal treatment of women and men at work have themselves reported less frequently experiencing unwanted sexual behavior. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents who judge the attitude of management toward the combination of work and family to be positive have reported experiencing fewer incidences of unwanted sexual behavior within the department.

In addition, we investigated whether women were more often bothered by sexual harassment than men, and whether victims who report being bothered by the harassment experience more health problems compared to victims who did not feel bothered. A representative sample of 3,001 policemen and 1,295 policewomen in the Dutch police force filled out an Internet questionnaire. It appeared that women were more often bothered by sexual harassment than men, but gender did not moderate the relation between sexual harassment and mental and physical health. In addition, victims who felt bothered by the harassing behaviors reported more mental and physical health problems than victims who did not feel bothered. The distinction between bothered and nonbothered victims is important because appraisal is an essential aspect in the operationalization of sexual harassment.
