 ABSTRACT

The Destiny of the Book

The present theme the destiny of the book presents different

interpretations. As part of an artistic creation, the book has its own destiny. As a
cultural component, it generally integrates itself in the common destiny of
phenomena that occur in a particular epoch.
Not only is the readers attitude involved in its destiny (the reader who
changes himself like Heraclits river, changing his life experience, the taste of
the epoch etc.), but also the book itself, considered by many a living creature
which, similarly to humans changes itself according to the knowledge bearer
who receives it, because from a simple object the book becomes an aesthetic
masterpiece when the reader opens it. From this point of view, the dialectic of
reading/rereading proves itself interesting (see V. Nabokovs apparently
paradoxical expression You dont read books you can only reread them).
Matei Clinescu creates aesthetics of reading/rereading in his book To Read, to
Reread, emphasizing exactly the temporality of the reading which has grown
more evident in the past decades, when the literary criticism more or less orients
itself towards the readers role.

ABSTRACT

Andrej Bely and Eastern and Western European Dialogues in Early 20th
Century of Russian Culture

This article examines how the significance of this dialog, essential to

Russian thought and literature of the period is articulated in the essays of the
symbolist writer Andrej Bely. Starting with The Green Meadow, 1905, and
following his reflections on this theme until 1917, including the essays
East/West and Spring Thoughts, the analysis demonstrates that Bely considered
the intertwining of Western and Eastern elements to be the necessary steps in
Russian cultural destiny.

ABSTRACT

On the name Mariula in A. S. Pushkins poem The Gypsies

The overall meaning of the A. S. Pushkins poem The Gypsies hinges on the
name Mariula. It stands for an entirely particular way of perceiving and
representing the world in the poets point of view.
Starting from the analysis of the sounds and their articulation in the name
Mariula, the author of the article intends to present several dominant features of
it.
The sound make-up of the poem enables particular concentration on such
sounds as , , , , but primarily on the sound y in its strong and weak
variants.
The contrast between strong and weak y enacts the infinite desire for
freedom of Mariula, the Gypsy woman, on the one hand, and on the other, the
doubts aroused and challenge posed by the chaotic, asocial pattern of Gypsy
culture.
The name Mariula expresses in its sound construction, the feminine
character of the typical Gypsy community as well as the unbounded and
indefatigable maternal feeling.

Tolstoy and Turgenev : Between Jasnaja Poljana and Spasskoe-

Lutovinovo (about Genius Loci)

The article is a reflection on the question of genius loci as a Spirit and

Protector of the surrounding space, as a soul of the particular culture expressed
by symbols. This idea is applied to Jasnaja Poljana and Spasskoe-Lutovinovo as
places not only of habitation of two of the greatest Russian writers Leo Tolstoy
and Ivan Turgenev , but mainly as their geography of the mind. The strong
relationship of these authors with their places is reflected in their works.

 ABSTRACT

The Image of Russia in the Spiritual Heritage of Russian Emigration

The culture of Russian emigration is a unique phenomenon in the

universal culture. Each emigrant, either belonging to a political and cultural
elite of the Russian Empire, or acquiring with difficulty a visa to flee the country,
shouldered his way in the current of emigrant thinking, shaped by the Russian
idea and hardship.
The emigrants carefully and eagerly preserved the image of Russia: some of
them wrote about their homeland with feelings of regret and tender, with
sadness and indignation, being far away from their native land, each emigrant
experiencing the feeling and the tragedy of his Russia.
The philosopher Ivan Ilin, a true pioneer of Russian national identity, was
confident in his Discourses about Russia, that his beloved country would find the
necessary strength to recover. Ilin acknowledged the role of Russian people as a
final subject in universal history, based on the national identity of Russians.

ABSTRACT

Hypotheses on Postmodernism in Serbian Literature

 Postmodernism represents the subject of one of the most important
partisan debates on literary criticism in the second half of the XX century. The
end of the XX century certainly belongs to postmodernism, however we would try
to define it, and its effects are obvious not only in the arts and culture, but also
in everyday life.
Hypotheses on postmodernism seen as a cultural paradigm, appeared in
Yugoslavian literature after the Second World War, first as a symbiosis between
Belgrade surrealism starting with Duan Mati, and the new objectual poetics,
introduced by Vasko Popa, while its first representant was Danilo Ki. In this
work we chose to study two representative writers, whose works describe two
different hypotheses which illustrate the innovatory tendencies in Serbian
postmodern literature.
The Serbian postmodern writers have created a prose of differences,
identified in various directions, such as:
a) Borgesian prose, which gathers supporters of the principle of text
building using authentic and apocryphal documentation (Milorad Pavi);
b) Experimental prose, which gathers supporters of the metamorphosis of
discourse (Svetislav Basara).
The originality of Serbian postmodern writers work lies in its ontologically
paradoxical, parodical and ironical background, within a world which no longer
believes in myths and art, but which longs for its identity. There is no literary
masterpiece that could be considered original: originality is a unique and
irrevocable characteristic, while the postmodern background is intertextual.

The Concept of Love in Marina Tsvetaevas Poetry

This paper is aimed to approach the topic of conceptosphere through

Marina Tsvetaevas poetry. From the poetical system of this great Russian poet
the concept of love was chosen as a starting point for a series of other concepts,
such as: trust, soul, body, life, death, joy, sadness, separation, etc.
It is a very generous topic that allows the reader to discover Tsvetaevas
extremely rich spiritual and emotional world, which proves to be full of contrasts
and strangeness, maybe uncommon for those who are used to ordinary
standards.

ABSTRACT

Approaches to Reading Contemporary Literature

(based on Vladimir Nabokovs short story La Veneziana)

Valdimir Nabokov is trying in his writing to demonstrate that the aesthetic

value of a literary work rests not in the ideas therein but rather on their finely
wrought patterns, on the splendid interweaving of the less expressive details.
None of his works could be possibly exhausted at one reading, for each of them
is open to multiple interpretations.
Our paper displays several approaches to reading one of Nabokovs early
works, La Veneziana, completed in 1924. Among them we signal out the
predicting strategy.

ABSTRACT

V. Rasputin: the Last Chance of Hope and Love

Rasputin is one of the best representatives of the so-called rural prose, and
most of the valuable scholars in this topic maintain that Rasputins people
cannot be placed within a specific rural area as such, but that they belong to the
rural universe as a whole. That is because of their ethics, because their values
are part of the old traditions, and because they feel closer to the past than to a
present which they either cannot comprehend or they reject for being aggressive.
Rasputin aims to portray the village from the point of view of inter-personal
relationships, moral codes, and principles which govern that world. His is a
universe of simplicity which produces human beings, wherein the seeds of
individuality are carefully sown and nurtured by the people and for the people.
Conversely, Rasputin defines the city as a space of human degradation, a land
where humanity goes adrift, is unable to find its way, and ultimately sells its
soul to the devil.

Vladimir Makanins Underground, or the Antitotalitarian Literature

The paper discusses one of the most prominent contemporary Russian

writers, Vladimir Makanin, and his well-known novel, Underground, or a Hero of
Our Times. Being a good example of Russian Postmodern literature, the novel
presents a very important theme for Russian literature and society the
ordinary people and the antitotalitarian regime. The hero fights not only against
Soviet and Post-Soviet power, but also against the lack of values in
contemporary world, when there is no place for culture and educated people.
Full of tragism, the novel could be seen as a sort of contemporary prolongation
of Dostoevskys Notes from Underground.

The Muse Requires a Devout Service: on the Mythology of Olga

Sedakovas Poetical Work

This paper presents some aspects from the poetry of an established

contemporary Russian poet, Olga Sedakova, who writes in the tradition of
Russian modernism (the Silver-Age) and, more recently, of Joseph Brodsky.
Sedakovas erudite thinking self is devoted to poetical creation in which she
sees, again like her modernist predecessors and like classics, an act of religious
service. This paper traces some markers of Sedakovas poetry (the icon and the
silence) as relevant to her ars poetica, together with the motifs of childhood,
music, and dream. This paper shows how the attitude of self-absorbed silence
and the inner quest for the divinity build up Sedakovas personal mythology of
creation in her highly cultured and met poetical poetry.

ABSTRACT

Russian Feminine Prose Today

The author of the present study has decided to start a survey on one of the
contemporary orientations of Russian literature, considered by many a new
artistic and original phenomenon, which appeared recently on the literary stage.
Among the first writers of the feminine novel there are the so-called
commercial idols, known not only in their country, but also abroad: D.
Dontsova, A. Marinina, O. Robski etc.
This represents a literary production which, considering the
transformations in the feminine psyche under the new post-soviet conditions,
offers the reader an archetypal sui-generis fairytale of Cinderella, who has finally
found her happiness.
At the same time, parallel to the feminine novel genre a new type of
feminine prose emerges, a prose in which a new philosophy, regarding
womans spiritual strength, crystallizes. L. Petrushevskayas work belongs to this
literary genre, which depicts the womans daring spirit.

The Approach of Romanian Linguists and Anthropologists to

Lipovans

It seems that today the world becomes more and more interested in
traditional forms of culture, most of which are closely related to the religious
sides of human consciousness. This probably explains the increased interest in
the Russian Old Believers, as they managed to maintain for several centuries the
fundamentals of traditional spiritual and material culture of medieval Russia.
Russian Old Believers living in Romania the so-called Lipovans
appear to be an attractive theme for research in Russia, Romania and elsewhere.
Lately, with the emergence of Lipovan intellectuals, the members of the Old
Believers community in Romania began to explore their own culture.
In Romania most of the research work on Lipovans was done by the
university teachers from Bucharest, Cluj and Iasi. Lipovans are also present as
characters in several works of Romanian literature, like The Gallery of Wild
Grapes (Constantin oiu), Masha and the Alien (Nichita Danilov a writer from
the Lipovan community), Midnight Bride (Passionaria Stoicescu) and in some
essays of well-known Romanian writers and historians (Mihail Sadoveanu,
Nicolae Iorga).

The Russian Lipovans from Dobrogea as Seen in Konstantin

Leontievs Diplomatic Correspondence

Konstantin Leontiev, a great Russian thinker, who occupied the position of

vice-consul of the Russian Empire in Tulcea (August 1867 September 1868),
was particularly concerned about Old Believers situation in the Ottoman
Dobrogea, perhaps due to the friendship which united him, a high representative
of the tsars Alexander the II government and the Ataman Osip Semionovici
Goncear, a remarkable personality of Russian Old Believers in the XIX century,
a personality less knows today and unfairly forgotten after more than a century.
In his diplomatic correspondence, which has recently been published in an
extremely valuable volume for those interested in Russian history and culture,
Leontiev offers us plenty of new and very precious information about the
inhabitants of Dobrogea from the XIX century.
The Russian Lipovans were constantly under Leontievs scrutiny, for whom
they represented a piece of authentic Russia in an alien and often hostile
environment.
Of great interest prove to be Leontievs considerations regarding the
actions of different ethnic group representatives, mainly Bulgarians and Greeks,
on the highly tense political context present in the Ottoman Empire in the 60-
70s of the XIX century. At the same time, a great interest seems to rise
Leontievs considerations about Russian Lipovans attitude towards the
authorities and other populations, and also towards their historical motherland,
Russia.

From the History of Russian Philology in Romania

As an integral part of Romanian Slavic Philology, the Russian Philology has

old tradition in teaching Russian and also in releasing grammar books,
dictionaries, text-books dedicated to the process of teaching.
The authors of the present work underline the contribution of different
Romanian linguists and remarkable professors who laid the foundation of
Russian language teaching by creating the didactic material, or through their
didactic activity.

ABSTRACT

On the Problem of Symmetry of Intentional and Extensional Meaning

in the Metalanguage of Russian and Belarusian Linguistics

A problem of asymmetry of intentional and extensional meaning of

terminological units in the metalanguage of Russian and Belarusian linguistics
is investigated in the article. It is noted that comparative study of Russian and
Belarusian terminology has practical sense. Belarusian and Russian are state
languages in the Republic of Belarus.
Asymmetry of the linguistic terms in the Russian and Belarusian
languages has its expression in such phenomena as ambiguity and polysemy.
Common and specific features in both languages can be found.
Asymmetry of linguistic terms can be caused by various extra linguistic
and intra linguistic reasons. Asymmetry is not transient, because the
terminological system, which has to express a notion precisely and
monosemanticaly, aspire to the symmetry of the sign.

ABSTRACT

Artistic Text The Supreme Form of Language Functionality

The present work analyzes a series of theoretical problems regarding the

artistic text and its main characteristics. As a supreme form of manifestation of
the national language, the artistic text represents a sort of alloy that consists
of linguistic units belonging to all the functional styles of a language, since it can
practically make use of any element of these styles. Besides, in order to fulfill his
purpose, the author of an artistic text uses a large scale of means of expression,
specific to all the levels of a language (the phonetic, lexical, morphologic and
mainly syntactical levels). Also, the artistic text allows deviations from the
linguistic norms, but only when these deviations are justified by their aesthetical
function.

ABSTRACT

Suffix word formation as a factor of existence of non-equivalency

A group of non-equivalent English words which exist because of non

correspondence of suffix word formation in the English and Russian languages
is investigated in the article. In most cases English suffixes have equivalent
suffixes in the Russian language with the help of which Russian one word
equivalent is formed. But it can happen only sometimes. Such phenomenon can
be explained by valence characteristics of English and Russian suffixes. Ways of
translation of non-equivalent words of the type described can differ in the
English-Russian Dictionary and in the text. The word can be either omitted in
the dictionary or description can be used. Interpreter can render these non-
equivalent words with the help of description, total change of the expression,
omission, substitution by another part of speech, substitution by the equivalent
of the word without suffix.

ABSTRACT
The Possession Cline in the Russian Converbal Construction

Previous studies could not have elucidated the relation between the converb
subject and the subject of the main clause in the Russian converbal
construction, regarding possession cline. Universally, possession cline
represents the degree of closeness/attachedness physical and/or psychological
between the possessor and the possessed, ranging from inalienable possession
to alienable possession. The distinction between inalienable and alienable
possession is not clear-cut but is a matter of degree. They extend from the high
end of the cline towards the low end; the cut-off point varies. The possession
cline correlates with the acceptability of the Russian converbal construction,
where the converb subject indicates a possessor and the subject of the main
clause indicates a possessee. The result of our study shows that the Russian
converbal construction is more acceptable when it involves a possessee higher
on the cline (inalienable) than when it involves a possessee lower on the cline
(alienable).

Science Development And The Lexical Enrichment

The present work is an approach to the Russian newly-issued elements

connected to the abbreviation, the nanotechnology, to the Romanian equivalents
present for the first time and to the preposition in the Slavic languages. The
nanotechnology comes into being in the middle of the last century and
displaying numerous and spectacular derivates and is continuously developing.

Professional Bilingualism in Military Communication

Professional bilingualism has proven to become a widely spread linguistic

phenomenon in the filed of the military communication. The range of the military
actions undertaken by the world security system sets as a top class priority the
mastering of a common language in order to make military tasks fully efficient.
Bearing in mind the fact that multinational structures have become involved in
this respect, the linguistic barrier should be the first obstacle to be overcome at
all levels of action.

Animated Films in the Process of Teaching

Russian as a Foreign Language

This article highlights some aspects of using authentic cultural artifacts

(works of Russian animation) in teaching Russian as a foreign language.
Animation works are used in contemporary foreign language pedagogy to
improve students language skills, in various areas: grammar, vocabulary,
conversation. This article aims to prove that the classical Russian animation film
Krokodil Gena (1969, Soiuzmultfilm), that uses simple dialogues, includes many
elements that can be used to build Romanian students awareness towards some
features of Russian that form its specificity (compared to Romanian), such as:
the preference for impersonal constructions to express possession or states of
being, as opposed to their personal counterparts in Romanian; the synthetism of
Russian proved by prefixed verbs, relational and possessive adjectives that have
multilexemic correspondents in Romanian; the semantic concreteness of many
Russian words compared to their Romanian equivalents; etc.

Using Romance Languages as a Model

for Teaching Russian at Introductory Level

This analysis exposes several issues related to teaching Russian to

students whose native language is Italian. The discussion focuses on specific
Romance languages paradigms that can be implemented to support and
enhance introductory Russian language courses. Specifically, this article
examines methods of teaching the alphabet and primary lexicon and presents
effective applications of these innovative cross-cultural strategies.
