Education occurs when a teacher can understand his student, and then facilitate change from that point. In this way, Socrates can "turn" his student. For example, Socrates "turns" Glaucon by allowing him to "take charge" of the exploration into the nature of virtue. He "turns" Phaedrus by using his loves (of rhetoric, and of Lysias!) to demonstrate the superiority of dialectic. This is not manipulation; although frustrated pupils often feel that way in the midst of it (Meno!).
