If the phrase is omitted, as most now agree it should be, then it it has deep implications for how congregants ought to exercise the discipline of the church, especially in cases when someone in a position of less power is a victim.

The article then examines the semantics of צֶ֫לֶם and דְּמוּת and their associated prepositions in Genesis 1:26-27 and 5:1-3. In light of the cosmic sanctuary-construction setting of Genesis 1-2 and cognate ANE motifs, this study argues that the creation of humanity constitutes the temple construction capstone as the installation of God's living cult statue in his sanctuary. The contextual constraints guiding our consideration of "image" and "likeness" furthermore drive us to read the plural cohortative of Genesis 1:26 in terms of the plurality within the Godhead rather than as an address to the heavenly court. These threads converge to display the fabric of צֶ֥לֶם אֱלֹהִ֖ים language in Genesis as the anticipation of humanity's incarnational telos: the perfection of the image in Jesus Christ, the new humanity.

I had to rework the paper for length, focusing only on Mordecai and cutting most of the material on Ahasuerus. This is the paper with the additional material added back in, though that material is not expanded upon nor always developed fully. It is a broad brush overview, touching on a number of points, all of which are worthy of further consideration, which I hope to give them at some point.

The forthcoming book will explore some important areas that I was not able to cover at length in this paper, notably how the imago Dei relates to humanity's destiny as council as well as Enochic literature and other Pseudepigrapha.
This paper was first presented to Dr. Peter J. Leithart and Dr. James B. Jordan at Theopolis Institute on March 11, 2017.
My treatment of the Divine Council really is the exploration of a story. In this story man was created by God as a child—an infant, really—and is steadily brought to maturity. The fall of Adam immediately presents an obstacle to how this maturation is supposed to progress, but it does not frustrate God’s plan; instead it directs the story to an even more glorious conclusion. This is the story of how God elevated mankind to his place in Council through Jesus Christ, the man.

Through this study I hope to show how this particular part of the prayer was introduced and why it is important for us. Presented here is a brief account of some of the directly relevant Biblical passages, as well as a summary of the historical and theological issues, and finally, a suggested form for an epiclesis based on those studies.
