ABSTRACT Among the major problems identified by Organisational Behaviour Scientists in Africa tod... more ABSTRACT Among the major problems identified by Organisational Behaviour Scientists in Africa today are those of a highly organised formal and a highly centralised management of organisation crushing the Organisation-Man under the dead weight of uniformity. Formal organisations have become large and complex and highly organised, and the basis of their organisation is production efficiency. In this system, an Organisation-Man is essentially looked upon as a producer and, because the formal organisation in which he is carrying on his role is so vast and complicated, personal relations seem to have lost all meanings. Formal organisation is relatively affluent. The output of goods is enormous, but entrepreneurs, and sometimes management continues to exploit the situation in their own interest, and the Organisation-Man is engaged all the time in nothing but the exacting task of trying to, or worrying in order to, improve his economic status. The Organisation-Man has to remain so busy in the pursuit of his vocation that he hardly gets time to look within himself and think of the quality of his life pattern. Meeting each other in factory or workshop or a crowd, commuting or agitating, he finds himself more and more isolated and alienated from the formal organisation.

Adopting a cross-sectional survey design and the questionnaire as the dominant research instrument, data were obtained from a sample of 306 employees from 6 firms that are operational in the Nigerian telecommunication industry. A total of 279 sets of the questionnaire were retrieved representing 91%. The emphasis on demographic characteristics of respondents wase on gender, academic qualifications, status and tenure. Due to the number of study variables, multiple regression analysis was employed for multivariate hypothesis testing, using the SPSS version 21 software. Results indicate that social interaction and social perception moderated the relationship between leader impression management strategy and subordinate work attitude. The study concluded that lea...

One of such concerns is project analysis and management, particularly in periods of high inflation. This study was advanced in this direction, harnessing and utilizing primary data from 42 incumbent professional (graduate) managers out of a target of 50. Chi-square (x2) statistical technique was applied in testing the research proposition, which underscored the adaptability and adoptability of discounted methodologies in spite of their peculiar size and allied features. The recommendations emphasized indigent entrepreneurial empowerment and micro business executive capacity building at the micro level and more conscientious inflation regimes on the other (macro) side of the divide. The five measures of organizational citizenship behaviour which we used as our criterion variable were altruism, conscientiousness, civic virtue, courtesy and sportsmanship. The study units comprised managers and workers and hence the corresponding level of analysis was the micro-level. The cross sectional survey was conducted with a sample size of 1450 workers drawn from a population of 3768 workers. The scales used were within the acceptable Cronbach Alpha values of 0.7, which was interpreted to be reliable. A total of 1,093 copies of completed and usable questionnaire was used for data analysis. Furthermore, descriptive statistics were computed at the primary level of analysis, while the Spearman Rank Order Coefficient was used at the secondary level of analysis. The result of the analysis showed that ther...

Isomorphism explains the forces that persuade and trigger organizations to pattern or recreate itself towards homogeneity. Going by our literary diagnosis, it was observed that the success and failure of an organization is largely tied to its responsiveness towards environmental expectations. Hence, isomorphic pressures such as coercive influence, normative behavior and mimetic process are associated with both opportunities and threats which have the potentials to make or mar the fortunes of organizations. Consequently, the study concludes that organizational survival is only possible in a climate of environmental awareness and swift responses and adaptation to isomorphic dictates. Therefore, we recommend that organizations should develop sustainable resilient behaviors through adaptive capacity building, situation awareness and key...

Using Cross Sectional Survey design, a sample size of 357 workers from the banks in the South-South zone of Nigeria was used as respondents. We found that suggestion scheme had a significant positive effect on employees’ continuance and normative commitment but no significant effect on employee’s affective commitment. This result suggests that when organizations utilize suggestion scheme as a form of employee voice, workers will be morally obliged to remain with the organization and will stay because they would not want to lose their investment.

This article describes an inquiry into how the African Industrial Manager would manage the impressions of his subordinates. It identified frameworks and methods that recognise the role processes play in organisational life through impression management formations. This was done through the use of focus groups and key informant interviews, with managers and workers in forty-five firms in the manufacturing and service sub-sector of both private and public sectors of the economy. It was discovered that an agenda for practicing impression management in African work organisations could adopt the IMD-AIM model of impression management, which highlights the Physical Appearance and Trait-Signal Dimension, Direct-Indirect Acquisitive Dimension and Direct-Indirect Protective Dimension. This model offers increasing potential benefits...

Using Cross Sectional Survey design, a sample size of 357 employees from the Banking Industry in the South-South zone of Nigeria was used as respondents. The results drawn from the use of Spearman Rank Order Correlation showed that Internal Attitude Survey had a significant positive association with workers continuance and normative commitment, but no significant association with workers affective commitment. This result suggest that when employees views and feelings are known by management and positive steps taken to redress imbalances, employees will be morally obliged to remain with the organization and will not be willing to leave the organization because of possible loss in their investment.

In Nigeria, a Nation with several ethnic nationalities and languages, as well as diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, the issue of diversity appears to be one of the most important challenges to managers. Nigeria which has grown from a basically agrarian society is now regarded as one of the most populous industrially developing nations in the world, which is richly endowed with abundant human and natural resources. However, most of the economic drawbacks of the nation are attributable to the inability of the organizations to perform optimally. This Paper believes that the proper management of a diverse workforce is the key to achieving optimum corporate performance and highlights challenging issues which have implications for managers.
