A laboratory study was carried out to establish the relative importance of verbal and gestural behavior, as well as their interaction, for perceived social influence in more or less competitive small groups. Forty women (psychology students) participated in leaderless small group discussions of different sizes (fourmember and eight-member): at the end, each member rated the perceived influence in decision-making of every other member. Verbal dominance coding is based on traditional quantitative conversational dominance (number of talk turns). Gestural coding (conversational, ideational, object-adaptor, self-adaptor gestures) is based on classical gesture classifications. Beside a substantial effect of verbal dominance, the main result is that frequency of object-adaptors and conversational (only in large groups) and ideational (in both small and large groups) gestures increases perceived influence scores particularly when the verbal dominance of the speaker is low.

Through a review of the research group's programme on hand gestures, some of the main conceptual issues (structure and function) and pertinent research developments will be highlighted. Priority goes to a universally shared category system to describe the phenomenon, taking into consideration traditional scientific principles (such as reliability); moreover, given the nature of the phenomena studied, multi-media methods for presenting the analytic tools used and the results of research should be created to improve use and diffusion of the taxonomy system. Another priority is the study of the functions of gesture. Research should not be limited, as already done in the literature, to qualitative studies of verbal and gesture co-occurrence and sequence: rather, it should aim at quantitative studies providing statistical evidence for such associations. A taxonomy of hand gestures and a digital tool (CodGest) are proposed in order to describe different types of gesture used by speaker during speech in different social contexts. It is an exhaustive and mutually exclusive categories system to be shared within the scientific community to study multimodal signals and their contribute to the interaction. Classical taxonomies from gesture literature were integrated within a comprehensive taxonomy, which was tested in five different social contexts and its reliability was measured across them through inter-observer agreement indexes. A multi-media tool was realized as digital support for coding gestures in observational research.

In the different areas, the dates of census varied according to the climatic conditions and snow cover. Days with strong wind and/or rain were avoided. Censuses were carried out in the first four hours of the morning (Bernard-Laurent & Laurent 1984, Bocca 1990). In each count-point, the call of the species (20") was broadcasted four times (towards N, E, S, W). Each call was followed by 20" of listening. Points were placed along 63 transects (Fig. 1). To obtain the density (pairs/km 2) of the species in each study area, we assumed that a singing male was paired with a female (Bernard-Laurent & Laurent 1984); therefore 1 point was assigned to a pair or singing male and 0.5 points to an observed individual. In addition, using an optical telemeter (Swarovski Laser Guide 8x30), we established that the maximum distance for species detectability was 200 m as an average of different conditions of species recording. Thus, the investigated surface for each pointcount was 12.56 ha. In summer (end of August-early October), in part of IntroductIon Rock partridge Alectoris graeca shows an unfavourable status in Italy and Europe (BirdLife International 2004, Peronace et al. 2012, Dir. 2009/147/CE). Regional Agency for Parks (ARP) of Lazio region in cooperation with the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) undertook an investigation on the conservation status and distribution of this species in Lazio. The main aim of the project was to draw up the regional Action Plan for rock partridge in order to correctly manage its populations. MaterIal and Methods Since the summer 2007 to the spring 2009, in the open and rocky habitats potentially suitable for the species, data on the status of rock partridge were collected. In spring, surveys of rock partridge were conducted using playback technique in point-counts during the period (March-June)

Scarce information is available on the current status of Apennine populations of Alectoris graeca. In this paper, data on re-cent distribution of the species in each Apennine region and data on census in several Apennine areas are reported. In Marche region, the size of population was estimated in 110-137 pairs and maximum density (1.25 pairs/ km 2) was observed in M. Sibillini National Park. In Umbria region, the size of population was estimated in 9-23 pairs. In Lazio region, the size of population was estimated in 171-342 pairs and the highest densities were recorded in the Reatini Mountains (2.02 pairs/ km 2) and in 'Montagne della Duchessa' natural Re-serve (1.90 pairs/ km 2). In Abruzzo-Molise regions, the size of population was estimated in 1500-1700 pairs and highest regional densi-ties were recorded in the Maiella National Park (4.2 pairs/ km 2) and Velino Sirente Regional Park (2.10 pairs/ km 2).
