Drawing on findings from two extensive case studies, we show that contrary to current literature, local networks particularly family ties maybe counterproductive of diaspora entrepreneurs as they engage in transnational entrepreneurship. We discuss the implications of our findings in relation to literature particularly when diaspora entrepreneurs’ COO are developing countries, saddled with weak institutional arrangements and environments.

Purpose-This paper explores the growth of social enterprise in the UK in the context of the renew... more Purpose-This paper explores the growth of social enterprise in the UK in the context of the renewed interest in the creative use of organisations with a social mission to complement public service delivery. Given the impact of globalisation and increased demands for effective social welfare interventions, this paper specifically focuses on the nature and type of social enterprise governance models and how they influence their outcomes. Design/methodology/approach-The study utilises an in-depth multiple case study approach. The data was collected from interviews of key informants and was recorded, transcribed and manually analysed inductively. Findings-The paper finds that the way in which the social enterprise governance structure is designed ultimately influences its outcomes. In particulate those with stewardship governance models tend to perform better than those with democratic models of governance. This leads to a conclusion that in the social context of the UK, social enterprise should aim for a paradigm shift in the design and selection of governance models. Research limitations/implications-Comparative regional experiences in other regions or social contexts could enrich our understanding of whether these results are applicable across the board. Practical implications-This article is of potential benefit to researchers and particularly those designing policies for the governance of social enterprise. Originality/value-The study employs innovative analytical theoretical lenses not normally associated with the social economy to increase our understanding of the growth and evolution of social enterprise governance.

Although the concept is increasingly attracting academic interest, there are still several areas requiring further scrutiny. One such key area is how the legal structures of social enterprises influence their outcomes. Drawing on a qualitative case study approach in South Yorkshire UK, this study contributes to ongoing debate on social enterprise by providing insights into the nature of legal structures and related operational issues across the region. The findings revealed that type of legal structure is intricately linked to social enterprises' ability to achieve their objectives. Rather than rely on traditional legal structures, social enterprises in South Yorkshire have adopted innovative legal vehicles that help them to achieve financial sustainability while at the same time maintaining their social ethos.

In the last two centuries, the world population has jumped from one billion to more than seven bi... more In the last two centuries, the world population has jumped from one billion to more than seven billion people. In addition, by the year 2050, nine billion individuals with more than 70% of this contingent living in the cities are estimated (Santos, 1988; Durand, 1977). Increasingly, the world becomes urban (Lefebvre, 2013) and the demand for socio-environmental services grows. In this context, the need of the population and the inability of the governments corroborate the neoliberal hegemony, a scenario in which the state loses power for the market sector. In different ways, both Brazil and England are intensifying their neoliberal policies (Maricato, 2017; Nicholls & Teasdale, 2017), which justifies asking: how are social enterprises of urban agriculture influencing the resilience of the cities of Belo Horizonte and from London. To answer this question, the qualitative approach was used as a research methodology when conducting a holistic multiple case study (Maffezzolli & Boehs, 2016). The unit of analysis belohorizontina was the Jardim Produtivo and London was Stamford Hill, both are producers of vegetables. In these units, in 2016 and 2017, the author made direct observation and did interviews, in addition to resorting to documentary sources (Yin, 2005). Starting from partnerships between governmental entities and the third sector, the Productive Garden was established in 2007. The project that originated Stamford Hill is also from 2007, but the initiative came from the second sector. In the latter case, a private company was supported by English non-governmental organizations. The two enterprises are considered social enterprises (Defourny & Nyssens, 2017) of urban agriculture (Mougeot, 2005). The management of the two companies was transferred to the local communities after their establishment. Research has shown that, even in areas where capitalist enterprises predominate, social enterprises can contribute to increasing resilience (Klug, 2018) of cities. In the two empirical cases investigated, favorable environmental impact was observed, since the food miles reduced and the green areas increased. In addition, the local population felt safer with the occupation of vacant lots and the supply of agroecological products grew in both cities, which reduces the burden of public health services (De Oliveira Trecha et al., 2017). The work also showed that Stamford Hill's main contribution to London's resilience was in the social dimension. The families there use the garden space to get together and receive friends. In this respect, the Jardim Produtivo differed, since most of its workers were focused on the financial side of the business. In the Brazilian case, the company contributed to making the city more resilient in the economic dimension, especially for the low-income population. The main limitation of this study was the small number of cases investigated, which made generalizations unfeasible. For this reason, it is suggested to approach new social enterprises of urban agriculture in other works.

It focuses on measuring the motives of Egyptian entrepreneurs. The research design of the article is based on a quantitative data collection method in which a questionnaire was administrated to 211 small and medium sized firm entrepreneurs in Alexandria, Egypt. The results of the article indicate that the financial motive has less impact than the need for recognition in the process of starting a business. However, the financial motive is greater than the need to preserve family businesses and traditions. The recognition motive is related to perceived favorable governmental policies designed to stimulate entrepreneurial development. The financial motives are not associated with perceived economic conditions or available marketing opportunities. The notion of "power fields" and "habitus", proposed by Bourdieu (1989; 1996), provides the theoretical backdrop to our discussions. This focusses largely on the recursive connection between structure and agency which resonates with the work of Fligstein (2006). This study seeks to critically analyse the learning and social practice developed by professionals in NGOs in their daily activities. This study is based on qualitative research and the results indicated that the knowledge produced by Brazilian NGOs, through the recursive connection between the agents of the fields and the structures underpinning them, contributes to the expansion and transformation of the field in which they operate.
