I'm Professor of Social Theory and Environmental Sociology at the Rhode Island School of Design. My current areas of interest/teaching are focused around: (i) Just and rapid post carbon transitions and the green growth/degrowth/a-growth debate; socio-technical transitions theory, the political ecology of energy transitions, (ii) political ecologies of design, participatory design/urban planning; urban political ecology, design for transition (and its pathologies); (iii) Hybridity and environmental social/political theory, socionatures and technonatures, (iv)Environmental labor studies and design, worker centered design, ecosocialist political theory; (v) the sociology of futurism/Western/non-Western and indigenous traditions of futuring. (v) resisting ecofatalism, endtimes ecology, econihilism and eco-authoritarianism.

Who is authorized to bring about &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; the good anthropocene &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; ? Who gets to decide the path of our hybrid futures? In the last chapter we saw that some of the most influential contemporary manifestations of hybrid politics have been dominated by approaches that stress the central role that technologies and markets will play in &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; moving us forward. &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; But where does civil society, politics, social movements or the state fit into this vision? What role and what say should diverse publics not simply conceptualized as &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; consumers &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; or &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; users &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; but as active citizens and political agents have in constituting hybrid worlds to come? In the final chapter of this book, we will sketch out a rather different set of attempts to imagine a critical hybrid politics beyond business as usual. All the currents we will look at in this chapter argue that if a defining feature of our hybrid worlds is that these are worlds that have to be composed, then the making of this anthropocene is inherently a political act. All the currents we will engage with here believe that questions of equity and justice have to be foregrounded in discussions about hybrid futures. Finally, to one degree or another, all these currents believe that publics have to be closely involved in the composition of our common home, that in short we need something like a public ecology (Luke, 2009). We will see in this chapter though that there is a considerably broad range of ideas as to how we might imagine the flourishing of public ecologies. This chapter identifies four sometimes-overlapping discussions that attempt to think and enact a critical hybrid politics. To give a few examples: During the past three centuries human population increased tenfold to 6000 million, accompanied e.g. by a growth in cattle population to 1400 million (about one cow per average size family). Urbanisation has even increased tenfold in the past century. In a few generations mankind is exhausting the fossil fuels that were generated over several hundred million years. The release of SO 2 , globally about 160 Tg/year to the atmosphere by coal and oil burning, is at least two times larger than the sum of all natural emissions, occurring mainly as marine dimethyl-sulfide from the ocean ...
