RGCS Theranostics & Molecular Imaging

Precision Cancer Care, Guided by Biology

Theranostics combines advanced imaging and targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy to identify and treat cancer at the molecular level. At Rio Grande Cancer Specialists, we deliver this care through a fully integrated, physician-led program designed for precision, efficiency, and access.

What is Theranostics

Theranostics is a clinical approach that links diagnosis and treatment through a shared molecular target. Specialized imaging agents are used to identify cancer cells based on specific receptors or biologic features. When those targets are confirmed, therapy can be delivered directly to those same sites using targeted radiopharmaceuticals.

    This model allows for:

    • More accurate disease detection
    • Better-informed treatment selection
    • Targeted delivery of therapy with reduced impact on surrounding tissue

Theranostics represents a shift toward precision oncology, where treatment decisions are guided by what can be seen and measured at the molecular level.

    Current and Emerging Applications

    Built for Today’s Treatments—and Tomorrow’s

Theranostics is already an established part of care for select cancers and continues to expand through a rapidly developing therapeutic pipeline.

      Currently utilized in:

      • Prostate cancer (PSMA-targeted imaging and therapy)
      • Neuroendocrine tumors (somatostatin receptor-targeted therapy)

      Expanding into:

      • Breast cancer–associated targets
      • Renal and gastrointestinal malignancies
      • Novel receptor-based therapies under clinical development

Our program is designed to adapt alongside these advancements, allowing patients and referring providers access to evolving treatment options as they become clinically available.

      Our Capabilities

Integrated Imaging and Targeted Therapy in One Location

Our Theranostics Center was intentionally designed to support both advanced imaging and therapeutic delivery within a coordinated clinical environment.

        Molecular Imaging

Advanced PET/CT imaging provides high-sensitivity detection of disease and helps determine eligibility for targeted therapies.

        Radiopharmaceutical Therapy

When appropriate, targeted treatments such as lutetium-177–based therapies are delivered in a controlled setting with experienced staff and established safety protocols.

        Coordinated Care Pathways

All services are integrated with our radiation oncology and advanced cancer programs, ensuring continuity from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.

        Patient Experience

        A Structured, Coordinated Process

Care within our Theranostics Center is designed to be both comprehensive and efficient.

Patients undergo clinical evaluation and advanced imaging to determine whether a targetable pathway is present. If appropriate, treatment options are discussed in detail, including expected outcomes and alternatives.

Therapies are delivered in a specialized clinical setting with attention to safety, comfort, and regulatory standards. Ongoing follow-up is coordinated through our oncology team to assess response and guide next steps in care.
