Lithium Battery Awareness
Link Copied!
Lithium-ion batteries power much of modern life—phones, tablets, laptops, radios, even small tools.
Offshore, these devices are essential, but they also come with hidden risks. Incidents linked to thermal runaway, overheating, and battery fires are on the rise, and operators like Perenco need their people to understand both the dangers and the rules.
With strict OEUK guidance around what can and can’t be taken on helicopters—and batteries continuing to be a safety hotspot—Perenco asked us to create an e-learning course that would build awareness, reduce risk, and give their workforce practical steps they could follow every day.
Collaboration
We began with a collaborative session hosted by Perenco, where they shared the issues they’d been facing and the control measures they were introducing. This gave us valuable insight into both the technical risks and the company-specific rules that learners needed to be aware of.
From there, we built a 20-minute course storyboard, fully branded for Perenco and tailored with their internal guidance. The course also highlighted specific banned devices, ensuring employees knew exactly what not to carry or use.
Authentic
To add depth and authenticity, we worked with Fire Chief, who kindly gave us permission to incorporate visuals and a short video into the course. This material added weight to the learning and helped us show the consequences of lithium-ion battery fires in a memorable way.
The finished course was highly visual, interactive, and designed to stick.
Key features included:
Core knowledge – the difference between lithium and lithium-ion batteries.
Risks explained – what thermal runaway is, why it happens, and the main causes: overcharging, overheating, short circuiting, or even crushing.
Travel rules – OEUK guidance for helicopter travel, including how many PEDs (portable electronic devices) each person may carry, and what qualifies as a PED.
The checklist – practical steps for packing offshore bags safely, from powering down laptops and tablets to switching devices into flight mode.
Perenco-specific guidance – including banned devices, company rules, and offshore expectations.
To reinforce learning, we added a short assessment at the end of the course. This helped learners check their understanding and gave Perenco a way to ensure the content was landing.
The Impact
By blending engaging animation, quality imagery, expert third-party material, and Perenco’s own guidance, the course delivered a complete package. Learners didn’t just get a theoretical overview—they came away with a clear understanding of the risks, the rules, and the simple actions that keep themselves and their colleagues safe.
For Perenco, the course offered consistency: every employee receiving the same clear message, fully aligned to both OEUK requirements and the company’s internal policies. And because it was interactive, branded, and assessed, it felt relevant and practical—more than just a box-ticking exercise.
This project shows the value of combining subject-matter expertise, company insight, and creative design. The result was an awareness course that protects people, safeguards assets, and gives a global workforce the tools to manage lithium-ion battery risks with confidence.
