Data Management Services
Basic Data Management Service
The RDMC Basic Data Management Service supports compliance with funding agency policies that require investigators and institutions to plan for data management and sharing and to demonstrate implementation of the plan.
All sponsored projects classified under the Organized Research or Clinical Trials categories receive the Basic Data Management Service.
For qualifying projects, the service fee must be included in your grant budget as a direct cost. The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) provides guidance on budgeting for the Basic Data Management Service and can answer questions related to budgets, project exemptions, and billing management.
The Basic Data Management Service Provides:
Welcome Package
A welcome package containing project-specific data management guidance, information about your project dataverse in UNC Dataverse, and other useful resources will be delivered to the project team at the beginning of the award period.
UNC Dataverse Project Dataverse
A project dataverse will be created to allow the project team to share project data and/or create searchable catalog records for data that are access-restricted or deposited in other repositories.
Archival Storage
Projects are allotted 2TB of archival storage in UNC Dataverse for long-term data preservation and public sharing.
Basic Data Management Service Orientation
The project team has the option to attend a basic data management service orientation with RDMC data stewardship staff to learn more about the Basic Data Management Service offerings and ask questions.
UNC Dataverse Orientation
The project team can attend a UNC Dataverse orientation session with RDMC data curation specialists for an introduction to the UNC Dataverse that includes walk-throughs of general data description, ingest, and sharing workflows.
Data Stewardship Consultation
Each project year, the project team can request two consultation sessions with RDMC data stewards, who will answer questions and offer project-specific recommendations related to data management and sharing plan implementation.
Project Check-ins & Closeout
To further support compliance with data management and sharing policies and guidelines, the RDMC team performs regular check-ins of data management and sharing activities to review progress toward data management and sharing plan implementation.

While the Basic Service provides the essential support necessary to comply with funding agency policies, some projects may need additional services or expertise to address specific research data stewardship or resource needs. The main purpose of the Social Motivation Study is to examine how social experiences and the transition into puberty in preteen girls may lead to mental health concerns. The study is particularly interested in how preteen girls’ social goals (e.g., for friendship, social media, etc.), challenging life events, and puberty may interact and lead to some youth developing mental health concerns.
