L'Abbondanza: A growing network under the Gala banner


For over thirty-five years, L'Abbondanza has been operating in Umbria, Tuscany, and the Marche region, under the recently adopted Gala brand. It has over 50 stores, including two-thirds of traditional supermarkets and one-third of integrated supermarkets.

From Data to Action: How L'Abbondanza Turns KPIs into Growth Tools

Since 2003, L'Abbondanza has had the E3 Suite installed, which distributes daily reports to all corporate functions at its headquarters to monitor key KPIs. During a period of organizational change, which saw improved sales processes, focusing on accountability and sharing results with the network, the decision was made to activate a channel for access to stores using interactive dashboards. The project's guidelines are:

  • Point of Sale side: "encourage" the store to quickly and immediately read the main KPIs compared with comparable stores by sales channel, supported by the idea that knowledge of the data fosters motivation and initiative
  • Inspectors' side: promote communication with the store in a spirit of transparency and objective comparison, aimed at organizational improvement
Reasons for the choice
Abundance chooses the Suite E3 evaluating the solution's strengths as:
Jaspersoft, fully integrated into the E3 Suite and available with an "embedded" license, is an international software present in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for BI platforms
Jaspersoft, as a ROLAP tool, operates on native databases, with the advantage of leveraging the E3/Oracle database, already designed and efficient for the company's analyses and reports. It also benefits from E3's back-end processes for daily data updates.
At the professional support level, the Relatech consultants were found to be very available and present directly, collaborating directly with the technical resources and company officials, thus promoting the success of the project.
The graphic interactivity of the tool in a web environment allows the use of interactive filters by users, making line personnel autonomous as well.
The integration of the tool in an embedding perspective conveys the univocal management of individual users within the E3 portal integrated with reporting and BPM services

From dashboards to collaboration: the project that connects the entire company

Using the E3/Jaspersoft Suite, L'Abbondanza quickly achieved its goal of deploying corporate dashboards nationwide. Distribution across the network was achieved through the provision of the "store dashboard," a tool focused on key sales KPIs, including sales, department traffic, receipt count, average receipt, discount rate, and fresh produce share.

All indicators are thoroughly compared with the channel benchmark and the aggregate budget, allowing for a clear understanding of performance. The project achieved rapid positive results, thanks in part to a dedicated classroom training program for store managers and department heads.

In terms of time, attention was focused on various analysis methods: weekly detail, with the option to select and compare one or more weeks; comparison between non-homogeneous weeks, useful during holiday periods or for analyzing different promotions between stores; annual progress updated to the previous week; and finally, summary, with monthly detail.

In less than fifteen days, L'Abbondanza achieved significant results: the company dashboards were consulted online daily in a simple and fast way, over 60 users were activated and profiled based on their respective areas of expertise, and a common language was created, which became the point of reference for communication between network staff and head office officials.

The extension of the platform's use to other company areas, including the purchasing office, is currently being studied.
