What the system is doing
LENS — Low Energy Neurofeedback System — reads your brainwaves and sends back a tiny, imperceptible signal. Think of it as a mirror your brain can see itself in. Over time, your brain uses that information to settle into healthier patterns on its own — no game, no screen, no homework.
What actually happens in a session
You sit in a comfortable chair while we attach a few small sensors to your scalp using a paste that washes out easily. The sensors rest on your scalp and hands, recording your brain's own electromagnetic activity. Nothing is introduced — they only capture what's already there and reflect it back. You close your eyes and relax. Start to finish — check-in, sensors, and session — the whole appointment is about 25 minutes.
Throughout the session, your provider is watching for your nervous system to shift into its parasympathetic state — the body's natural mode of rest, repair, and recovery. It's the opposite of fight-or-flight. Some people notice a gentle wave of calm, others feel almost nothing in the moment. What most clients begin to notice is relief — a quieting they haven't felt in a while.

How LENS Compares to Alternative Treatments
More people are looking beyond traditional medication — here's how LENS stacks up against two of the most sought-after options.
| LENS Neurofeedback | Ketamine Therapy | TMS | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session length | ~25 minutes | 2–4 hours | 20–40 minutes |
| Drug-free | Yes | No — pharmaceutical compound | Yes |
| What’s introduced to the brain | Nothing — reflects your own brain signals back | Ketamine — alters brain chemistry | Magnetic pulses that stimulate neurons |
| Side effects | Minimal to none | Dissociation, nausea, potential dependency | Headaches, scalp discomfort |
| Recovery time after session | None — drive yourself home | Yes — several hours | None |
| Works alongside talk therapy | Yes — many clients do both* | Sometimes | Sometimes |
* Refuge offers LENS, talk therapy, and EMDR — your provider will recommend what fits your situation.
Most people aren’t looking for one more treatment to manage. They’re looking for a way out. LENS works alongside whatever you’re currently doing — but the honest goal is a nervous system that doesn’t need managing anymore.

Supporting Your Path to Heal, Grow & Connect
I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor committed to helping you restore mental health and build healthy relationships.
I grew up in several countries in South and Central America as a missionary kid, which gave me a deep appreciation for connecting with people from all backgrounds. My passion for counseling developed through my travels, where I saw a common theme — people struggling with relationships and mental health. That experience shaped my deep hope and tenacity to help others find healing, even in the face of deep pain or loss.
I came to LENS specifically because I kept seeing clients — kids and adults — who needed support that traditional therapy alone couldn't reach. The brain and nervous system needed a different kind of help. LENS gives me a tool that's gentle enough for the most overwhelmed clients and effective enough to make a real difference.
When I'm not counseling, I enjoy spending time with my family and community, savoring a yummy scone with tea, and spending time with God in prayer and worship.
Bringing in a Child
LENS is gentle and completely non-invasive — no shocks, no needles, no medication, nothing your child has to do. The sensors simply read brain activity. Most kids find sessions deeply relaxing, and many fall asleep.
If your child is nervous about the sensors, we go slow. The first time might be just a few seconds. We can start on a hand or foot instead of the scalp, and kids are welcome to bring a stuffed animal — we'll demo the sensors on the stuffy first. Nothing hurts. Once kids feel how calm they are afterward, most of them look forward to coming back.

Common Questions
What is LENS Neurofeedback?
LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) is a specialized form of neurofeedback that uses very gentle signals to help the brain reorganize and regulate itself more effectively. The goal is to support healthier brain function naturally, without medication or invasive treatment.
What conditions can LENS help improve?
LENS may be helpful for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep difficulties, and symptoms related to trauma, concussions, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other central nervous system concerns.
What happens during a typical LENS session?
During a session, you will sit comfortably while small sensors are placed on your scalp to measure brainwave activity. The LENS device then sends a tiny, imperceptible signal back to the brain. Sessions are brief, usually lasting just a few minutes, and do not require active effort on your part.
Is LENS neurofeedback safe?
Yes. LENS neurofeedback is considered very gentle and has been widely used with minimal side effects. A small number of people may experience mild fatigue or a temporary increase in symptoms after a session, but these effects typically resolve within a day or two.
How many sessions are typically needed to see results?
The number of sessions varies based on the individual and the severity of their symptoms. Some people notice changes within 3 to 6 sessions. More lasting improvement often takes 10 to 20 sessions, and those with longer-term or more complex concerns may benefit from additional sessions.
Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?
Refuge Neurofeedback is private-pay only — we do not bill insurance directly and we do not accept Medicaid. We can provide a detailed superbill that you may submit to your PPO or out-of-network insurance provider; depending on your plan, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement.
Is neurofeedback the same as neurotherapy?
Yes — "neurotherapy" and "neurofeedback" are often used interchangeably. Both refer to non-invasive brain training that helps the nervous system regulate itself. At Refuge we use the LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) form of neurotherapy, which is passive, brief, and well-tolerated by kids, adults, and concussion clients alike.
Is this right for my child?
Neurofeedback is safe and effective for children. Sessions are calm, non-invasive, and most kids find them relaxing. We explain the process in age-appropriate terms and work at your child's pace.
How is LENS different from traditional neurofeedback?
Traditional neurofeedback requires active participation — watching a screen, playing a game, or responding to feedback for 30–45 minutes. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) works passively. Sessions are typically under 25 minutes, you don't have to do anything, and many clients respond in fewer total sessions. It's especially well-suited to people who struggle with focus, fatigue, or sitting still — including kids and those recovering from a concussion.
How long is a typical session?
LENS sessions are short — typically 25 minutes from start to finish. Your intake session is longer (about 50 minutes) so we can understand your full history, goals, and symptoms before treatment begins. Your first LENS treatment is included in the intake.
Where are you located? Do you see clients in person?
Yes — all LENS neurofeedback sessions are in person. We have two Kansas City metro locations to make it easy: Overland Park, KS (11791 W 112th St, Suite 102) and Lee's Summit, MO (200 SW 3rd St). Choose whichever is more convenient when you book.
What does a session cost?
LENS neurofeedback sessions are $150 (25 minutes), and the initial intake is $165 (50 minutes, first LENS treatment included). We also offer package discounts — pay for a block of sessions upfront and save a percentage off the per-session rate. See our pricing page for the current packages.
