Calculate Data Size
Calculate the data size from transfer speed and time. The duration is easy to measure, but the transfer speed is generally not constant, so it can only be given as an average or estimated figure. Therefore, the result of this calculation is also only an estimate. However, the size of a completely transferred file can be easily read out.
Enter the transfer duration and speed and click Calculate. The percentage of the file already transferred can be changed if the file has not yet been completely transferred.
Time can be entered like 1 min 40 s or like 100 s. The conversion factor for the prefixes is 1000, e.g. 1 GB = 1000 MB.
B = byte, kB = kilobyte, MB = megabyte, GB = gigabyte, TB = terabyte
Example: If the transfer speed is 5 Mbit per second and the transfer time is one hour, the file size is 2.25 gigabytes. However, if only 50 percent of the file has been transferred at that time, then the total file size is 4.5 gigabytes. Because the lower the transferred percentage of the file, given the same duration and transfer speed, the larger the file will of course be.
Such a calculation can be helpful if only part of the data has been transferred, or if the transfer progress is known but not the total file size. Testing a connection can also be done with an unknown amount of data.
In more abstract terms, calculating file size from transfer time and speed allows for estimating network utilization, planning data transfers, and checking available bandwidth. This makes it possible to estimate how much time downloads or uploads will take and whether the existing connection is sufficient for the planned amount of data. This information is also useful for storage planning, for example, for backups or cloud services, to calculate capacity in advance.
