Utilization Calculator

Calculates the degree of utilization from planned and achieved amount. The utilization, for example of a machine, tells, how much of a planned amount or time is reached. It is a percentual value, 100 percent are achieved, if all works like expected. Higher utilization is also possible, but can lead to problems such as overstraining, increased wear and tear, or quality losses. Utilization is a key performance indicator in production planning and control, as it provides information about efficiency and capacity utilization. It helps to identify bottlenecks and optimize resource allocation.

The calculation is a very simple percentage calculation: Utilization in % = Achieved quantity / Planned quantity * 100

Example: a number of 125 pieces is planned, but only 117 pieces are produced. Then the degree of utilization is 93,6 percent.
Another example: With a planned production time of 8 hours and an actual runtime of 9 hours, the utilization rate is 112.5 percent, which indicates an overload.

In practice, a distinction is often made between technical utilization (utilization of machine capacity) and economic utilization (cost-benefit ratio). Both are important for making sound and appropriate decisions. Technical utilization depends on the capabilities and limitations of the technology used, such as production machinery. Economic utilization indicates how efficiently the available resources are used to achieve the highest possible economic return. It is therefore related to how much of the manufactured product is actually needed and can be sold.
Warehouse utilization is another, separate aspect. It indicates how much of the available storage space is actually used and how efficiently inventory is stored and managed. Optimal warehouse utilization means that neither too much nor too little space is occupied, in order to avoid both idle costs and bottlenecks. Factors such as inventory turnover, warehouse organization, and seasonal fluctuations play a role here.
