Calculate Liters in a Box

Calculator how many liters fit in a box of a certain size or what size the box needs to be.

Mathematically, a box (carton, crate) is a cuboid. The size of the box is precisely determined by specifying the length, width and height, the volume results from the product of these three values, i.e. length times width times height. Of course, the legths inside the box have to be measured here if the box wall has a notable thickness. Or you can measure on the outside and subtract the single (if one side is open) or double (if the sides are closed) thickness.

Example: a box that is 30 cm long, 10 cm wide and 20 cm high has a capacity of 6 liters.

Without the lid, this wooden box has internal dimensions of 21.4 cm x 18.7 cm x 4.8 cm, the lid is 1.4 cm high, so it can hold a maximum of almost 2.5 liters (21.4 x 18.7 x 6.2 / 1000). Not if it's filled with a liquid though, which will spill out when you open the lid (and this box wouldn't be watertight anyway).

This calculation applies not only to boxes, but also to other rectangular containers, such as a carton or a crate. Distinguishing these things precisely is sometimes difficult anyway. However, calculating the contents of such a container is easier than any other. Cuboid containers of the same size are characterized by their easy and seamless stackability; they are particularly popular for storage. A common small container of this shape is the matchbox; a large cuboid container is for example a shipping container. Of course, many other containers like this can be found.
