It celebrates and gratefully acknowledges Michael's manifold contributions both to the study of ethnicity and nationalism, and to ASEN, the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism. Founded at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), in 1990, ASEN sought to bring together scholars interested in all issues and problems relating to ethnicity and nationalism, providing them with a platform for intellectual exchange and the advancement of knowledge. ASEN thus gave this field of study an institutional, organised expression and a centre of reference. It was during the late 1980s, in the wake of the collapse of Communist regimes across East-Central Europe and the USSR, that the study of ethnicity and nationalism emerged as a field of study in its own right. Anthony D. Smith and the creation, under his aegis, of ASEN, by doctoral students, studying various aspects of ethnicity and nationalism at LSE, and other LSE-based academics, made crucial contributions to this development. "Nationalism Studies" would encompass a range of related fields and subjects, both new and well-established. Michael played a defining and powerful role in the development and consolidation of both the association and its intellectual cause, which would incorporate, under the umbrella term of "Nationalism Studies," the field of study with which he is most closely associated, "ethnic relations." Indeed, and as Tariq Modood notes in his contribution to this symposium, "Michael Banton was one of the founders of the study of ethnic relations in Britain, including what might be called 'the Bristol School of Ethnic Relations' ." Michael was a solid pillar of ASEN and of its first journal, Nations and Nationalism (N&N), whose first issue was published in 1995. This essay explores the history of the interpretation and reception of the battle of Marathon bot... more This essay explores the history of the interpretation and reception of the battle of Marathon both by its contemporaries in Greece and Persia, and by later generations. It focuses attention on the reception of the battle in North-Western Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. It shows, first, the development of West European national identification with 5th-c BC Athens and idealisation of the liberal and democratic spirit of the Marathonomachoi and, second, the expansion of a European belief that modern Europe owed its civilisation and freedom to that ‘battle on the beach’ which inspired Greek resistance to foreign, despotic rule, and created the pre-conditions for the subsequent free development of ideas which gave rise to the ‘golden age’ of Periclean Athens, in which modern European culture has found much of its nourishment.

Both the key terms, ‘nature’ and ‘aesthetics’, were variously interpreted, and the scientific community which was expected to pronounce on these matters was itself divided. Indeed, anthropological scientists could not agree on what nature, and particularly human nature, was. Did all the different forms of mankind which they had discovered constitute human nature? Individual views on this issue depended on differing theories of race. The two main positions might be called the unitary and the pluralist views of human nature. The unitary view claimed that there was a single norm in nature and that any variation from it meant deformity and degeneration.1 a pathological condition. The pluralist view was that man displayed a variety of equally ‘natural’ types.

This two day conference commemorates and critically assesses the significance of the legacy of An... more This two day conference commemorates and critically assesses the significance of the legacy of Anthony D. Smith, a foundational figure in the field of nationalism. It is an opportunity to consider where the field of nationalism stands today, the place of Smith within it, and the continuing relevance of Smith's ethnosymbolic framework in analysing the formation, and persistence and revival, of nations and nationalism. Anthony D. Smith's oeuvre is as vast as the range of topics he covered. He published 18 books, translated into 22 languages, and over 100 articles and chapters in books on nations, nationalism and ethnicity. We encourage papers that engage with Smith's work or address topics he was interested in. We propose to appraise his ethnosymbolic framework under three headings: premodern ethnic formations and the modern nation; religion and the nation; and culture in the formation, resurgence, and persistence of nations. Smith's contribution can also be considered more generally, as he also helped systematise nationalism as a separate interdisciplinary field of study by identifying key questions, proposing definitions and typologies, and advancing future research agendas. The conference welcomes papers on the state of nationalism theory today as well as current work on ethnicity, religion and culture in relation to nationalism. Proposals tying the aforementioned themes to Smith's work will be favoured. Each of the two days of the conference will be punctuated by relevant plenary sessions, given by distinguished academics. A range of possible themes for papers is outlined below. Please submit your abstract online at this link by the 13 th November 2016. Your abstract should be no longer than 250 words and should state your name and institutional affiliation. You should expect to speak for no more than 15 minutes. Please ensure that you highlight how your paper relates to the conference theme and its central questions.
