According to Publisher's Weekly, 36 Japanese and American Publishers and Companies have gotten together to fight aggressively against online scanlation sites.
VIZ-Media, publisher of popular series like Naruto and Bleach, has released a statement on their website, citing the need to "protect the intellectual property rights of our creators and the overall health of our industry" as a reason for this move.
So, if you haven't finished reading your favorite series at one of these sites, better scoot on over and do it now - it might be gone by tomorrow. >.
