It forms the basis of Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, and many others. When I first got started on Linux, I tried it out because it was a key distribution. However, it wasn&#8217;t as beginner-friendly as other distributions, so I didn\u2019t spend much time with it. Now that I have more experience, and Debian has a version available for Raspberry Pi, it&#8217;s time to try again and share my journey with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An unofficial image of Debian &#8220;Trixie&#8221; is available for most Raspberry Pi models. Founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock, it is one of the early Linux distributions and one that is the basis for many other Linux distributions. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Debian name is derived from Ian\u2019s girlfriend at the time, Debra, and his first name, Ian. Debian\u2019s key feature at the time was the Advanced Package Tool which is still used with the APT command in Raspberry Pi OS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debian releases are named for characters from the Toy Story movies. The current release of Raspberry Pi OS is named Trixie, named after a blue Triceratops that appeared in Toy Story 3 (<a data-lasso-id=\"2664\" href=\"https:\/\/www.debian.org\/doc\/manuals\/project-history\/releases.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of Debian will be familiar to most Pi users, as it is what Raspbian and now Raspberry Pi OS are based on. It is, however, not ready for novice users out of the box. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debian itself is used on a lot of servers and other high-security-type installations, so minimal things are pre-configured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You install Debian on a Raspberry Pi?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thanks to the work of Gunnar Wolf, a Debian developer, it&#8217;s possible to install Debian on Raspberry Pi, even if there is no official release for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While not officially supported by the Debian project, it is well done and Gunnar explains that it is intended to be a very basic Debian system that is bootable on the Raspberry Pi, and not much else, as we\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you download a Debian image for a Windows or Mac computer, you will have choices about installing desktop software and different kinds of installers with several options. On the Raspberry Pi, there is only a minimal install, and you can do what you like with it after that\u2026 but you have to know how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Install Debian for Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the required steps to install Debian on a Raspberry Pi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Download the Debian image built for the Raspberry Pi.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flash it on a new SD card with Raspberry Pi Imager.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insert it into the Raspberry Pi and start it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Download the Debian image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The first thing we need to do is download an image from this site for our Raspberry Pi. <\/strong><br>You can <a data-lasso-id=\"2665\" href=\"https:\/\/raspi.debian.net\/tested-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download it from the official website here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image-1024x502.jpg\" alt=\"debian download image for pi\" class=\"wp-image-40373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image-1024x502.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image-768x376.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image-1536x753.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_download_image.jpg 1687w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, you\u2019ll find a list of available images and the hardware they&#8217;ve been tested with. I chose the latest Trixie image. Click the link to get the &#8220;xz-compressed image&#8221; for your model (in my case, Pi 4 with 4GB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are images for each of the Pi families from the Pi Zero through the Pi 400 and versions for Bookworm and Bullseye of each. Bullseye is the older release, but there aren&#8217;t enough differences to matter in these installers. Pick the one that matches your hardware and version choice, and then download the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flash Debian to the SD Card<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Once downloaded, we need to write the image to an SD card for booting the Raspberry Pi. <\/strong><br>The process is the same as for any other image file you may have done in the past, and either <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-balena-etcher-ubuntu\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13068\">Balena Etcher<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-imager-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11264\">Raspberry Pi Imager<\/a> is an easy choice to accomplish this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our example, we\u2019ll be using Imager:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Download the version for the PC you&#8217;re using to create the SD card: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/software\/\">available here<\/a>.<br>(Note, you can also do this on Raspberry Pi OS if you&#8217;d like).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install the downloaded file and launch the software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll be presented with the Imager home window. <br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" class=\"wp-image-32525\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Imager.jpg\" alt=\"raspberry pi imager\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Imager.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Imager-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Imager-1024x716.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Imager-768x537.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>CHOOSE OS<\/strong> and select <strong>Use Custom<\/strong> from the bottom of the list.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"189\" class=\"wp-image-17067\" style=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/imager-custom.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/imager-custom.jpg 504w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/imager-custom-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><br>This will prompt you to locate the image that you want to write to the SD card. <br>Navigate to your Downloads folder (or wherever you saved the Debian image) and select it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, click <strong>CHOOSE STORAGE<\/strong> to select where you want to write the image.<br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11272\" style=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/imager-storage-list.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once complete, click <strong>NEXT<\/strong> to write the image.<br>(If asked to apply &#8220;OS customisation settings,&#8221; select <strong>NO<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It won\u2019t take long to finish, as there isn&#8217;t a lot of data to write since the image does not contain a graphical desktop interface or software. We\u2019ll install those later!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above was the short version, but if you need a <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-imager-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11264\">full tutorial about Raspberry Pi Imager<\/a>, just click on the link for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: I tried to flash to a USB stick for storage instead of the SD card, and got a lot of I\/O errors. I guess the power required by the USB drive is not well managed by Debian. You might be more lucky, but I recommend using an SD card for this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Boot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Once the SD card is done verifying, it\u2019s ready to boot. Put the SD card in your Pi\u2019s SD slot and power it up. <\/strong>The first boot takes some time as it has a bit of housekeeping to do, but you will eventually get to a very underwhelming prompt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Debian GNU\/Linux trixie\/sid rpi4-20231111 tty1<br>rpi4-20231111 login:<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your numbers may be different, but the rpi4-20230101 is the current name of the computer. We can <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/set-new-hostname-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3406\">change that later if desired<\/a>. The login part is waiting for us to type a user name, and the only one set up is root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Default login:<\/strong> root<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Default password:<\/strong> &lt;none&gt;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you enter root and press return, you\u2019ll get some more info about the distribution and that it comes with absolutely no warranty and then a prompt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>root@rpi4-20231111:~#<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Root is the user who is in complete control of the Linux system and has access to everything, so you need to be careful. <\/strong>On Raspberry Pi OS, we usually have the sudo command that can be used when something needs root access, without actually having to open up the system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debian explains on the Raspberry Pi download page that they made this choice on purpose because they expect you to need to access the system and didn\u2019t want to have to track or publish usernames and passwords. We need to be careful with the next few steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/sudo-linux-command\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26272\">How To Use &#8216;sudo&#8217;: The Complete Linux Command Guide<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Configuration of Debian on Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we have it booted, we still have some work to do to make it usable on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activate Wi-Fi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you have an Ethernet connection, you can skip this step. Otherwise, the first thing we need to do is to establish a network connection with Wi-Fi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the files we need are there, but we have to give details about your Wi-Fi network, as clearly Debian wouldn\u2019t have those to include in the setup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To get there, we use the command:<br><code>nano \/etc\/network\/interfaces.d\/wlan0<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove the # symbols in front of the lines starting with <em>allow-hotplug wlan0<\/em> to uncomment.<br>(I left the one for inet6).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace the sample information following <em>wpa-ssid<\/em> with your Wi-Fi network name (SSID).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace the sample information after <em>wpa-psk<\/em> with your Wi-Fi password.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"517\" class=\"wp-image-9452\" style=\"width: px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Wifi-file.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Wifi-file.jpg 800w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Wifi-file-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Wifi-file-768x496.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once done, you can reboot your system:<br><code>reboot<br><\/code>No need for sudo as we&#8217;re root. In fact, sudo is not available by default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once that\u2019s complete, and you log back in, you should be able to do: <br><code>apt update<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you have a connection to the internet through your Wi-Fi, it will go through the motions of checking with the network repositories to see what needs to be updated. If your internet connection is not working, you\u2019ll get error messages that they can\u2019t be reached. Go back and check your settings if this happens.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you refresh the packages, it\u2019s a good idea to use the upgrade command to install up-to-date packages before we continue:<br><code>apt upgrade<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configure the Keyboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need to switch the layout of the keyboard, this can be done with: <br><code>dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the latest Debian version, this is not available by default, you have to install it manually, with:<br><code>apt update<br>apt install keyboard-configuration console-setup<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will ask you first for the type of keyboard you have and then a second screen will ask for the language.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian-1024x549.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian-1024x549.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian-768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian-1536x824.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/keyboard-config-debian.jpg 1547w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you make changes and doesn&#8217;t work right away, you need to apply them with the command: <br><code>setupcon<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add a User<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So that we don\u2019t have to continue to log in as the root user, and so that we can log in once we install the graphic desktop, we need to create a user. <\/strong>This can be done with the command: <br><code>adduser &lt;username&gt; <br><\/code>Try to avoid &#8220;admin&#8221;, &#8220;pi&#8221; or obvious names like that for <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/security-tips-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1148\">security reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll get a reply that a new user is being added and a group is being created for that user and a home directory is being created. That\u2019s all normal, and if you think about the home directory on the Raspberry Pi, the user has its own home directory with all your files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will then ask for a password and to confirm your chosen password.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_trixie_adduser-1024x419.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_trixie_adduser-1024x419.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_trixie_adduser-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_trixie_adduser-768x314.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/debian_trixie_adduser.jpg 1131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following that, it asks for a Full Name. I recommend that you give it something because that will be the user account that the graphic desktop uses to help you log in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It then asks for several other pieces of information like Room Number and phone numbers. You can just hit return on those, or fill them out if you like. The last question is \u201cis the information correct?\u201d Press y and you\u2019ll be returned to the prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While we\u2019re here, it&#8217;s a good time to change (or more correctly, add) the root password. Enter the command passwd at the prompt<\/strong>:<br><code>passwd<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we\u2019re still logged in as the root user, that\u2019s the password we\u2019re changing. It will ask for the new password and then a repeat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once complete, that password will be set for logging in as well as any other time you need a root password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More details here: <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/new-user-on-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3322\">How to Create a New User on Raspberry Pi?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allow sudo for Your User<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The system needs to know that this user is allowed to use sudo to execute commands. <\/strong>Here is how to allow administrative commands to your new user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you are root or switch to it with: <br><code>su - root<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will switch the user to root, as the Pi user doesn\u2019t have permission to do this yet. You\u2019ll be asked for the root password if you set one in the step above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then install the &#8220;sudo&#8221; package, that is not available by default on Debian:<br><code>apt install sudo<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, give privileges to use &#8220;sudo&#8221; to your username: <br><code>usermod -aG sudo &lt;username&gt;<br><\/code>Replace &lt;username&gt; with the user you created (&#8216;pat&#8217; for example).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will add the user to the sudo group so that it will now have permission to issue sudo commands. You should now be able to switch back to the normal user by typing:<br><code>exit <\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopefully, everything will then work normally. After doing a full system update, enter the command: <br><code>sudo tasksel<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will bring up a window with choices of desktop environments you can install. These include several, ranging from lightweight choices like MATE and LXDE to some pretty heavyweight distros like Plasma and Gnome.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Package-Config-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Package-Config-edited.jpg 800w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Package-Config-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Package-Config-edited-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gnome is the default package if you download a full Debian installer for other computers (<a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/latest-gnome-installation-debian\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you can find my dedicated tutorial here<\/a>), but since we only have the basics, we have to install one, and we can choose. I have installed Gnome, and it works reasonably well on the Pi 4, even though it\u2019s considered a fairly heavy distro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LXDE is the one that the Raspberry Pi OS is based on, so it will be most familiar, although it will still look quite different than the classic Pi OS that you\u2019re used to. The nice thing is that you can install more than one, if you have space, and select which one you want to use at startup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t know which one to pick? Find <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-desktop-environment\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9928\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2667\">my favorite desktop environments here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your eye on the installation for a few minutes, as it will pop up and ask what language should be installed. Once you answer that, you can just let it run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once installed, a reboot should bring you to the graphic desktop login, and you should see the user name\u2019s Full Name that we entered earlier as a choice. You might want to look at all apps, settings and under power, adjust the time before the screen is blanked &#8211; 5 minutes is not nearly long enough for my taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you look around, you\u2019ll see many familiar programs and commands, but also a lot of new ones, particularly in settings. Gnome is highly customizable, and just about every piece of the user interface can be adjusted to your liking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Another Desktop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you\u2019d like to play with another desktop environment, it\u2019s easy to add more. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open a terminal window and type:<br><code>sudo tasksel <\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll get the same window with choices that you can pick. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick one or more and wait for the installation to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the installation completes, you\u2019ll need to restart. On the login screen, you pick the username, and then in the lower-right corner, there\u2019s a settings menu (looks like a gear). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll find listed all of the desktop environments you have available.
