But when there are so many out there, it&#8217;s hard to tell which ones are the best. It will help you find and install new software on your Raspberry Pi.<br><\/strong>It&#8217;s equivalent to the default &#8220;Add\/Remove Software&#8221; with more features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see all Raspberry Pi OS packages on one&nbsp;page, browse by categories or search for specific words. And you&#8217;ll get all menus on the top bar, a feature we don&#8217;t have on the default software.<br><strong>It allows you to add repositories, customize the tool, or use a script to download packages automatically from a previous installation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you always use the <em>apt<\/em> command to manage packages, you won&#8217;t need this tool. However, for <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/using-raspberry-pi-as-a-pc\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/using-raspberry-pi-as-a-pc\/\">desktop usage of the Raspberry Pi<\/a>, I will be recommending mostly graphical software. You can install Synaptic in the same way you install other programs on Raspberry Pi OS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before installing any apps, make sure you&#8217;re using a fast SD card with enough space for everything. I don&#8217;t know about you, but I hate having to start all over again because I didn&#8217;t choose my materials wisely. If you&#8217;re not sure if your SD card is good enough, you can check <a data-lasso-id=\"2627\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-sd-card-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my benchmark of the best SD cards here<\/a>. I have compared them all, and I give you the best recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fadce4\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you want to see all these steps in action, I have a video lesson available for the community members. <a href=\"https:\/\/school.raspberrytips.com\/raspberrytips-community?utm_source=raspberrytips&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=inpost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You can join here and watch it directly<\/a> if you are interested (with 20+ other lessons for Raspberry Pi and many other benefits).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"xfce4\">XFCE4<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2133\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop.jpg\" alt=\"raspberry pi using xfce\" class=\"wp-image-34535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop.jpg 2133w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_desktop-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2133px) 100vw, 2133px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old-school default desktop environment was just not for me.<br>If I have to use the Raspberry Pi as my computer, I&#8217;d rather install a better interface.<br><strong>I have chosen&nbsp;XFCE4, but&nbsp;depending on your needs,&nbsp;other possibilities exist.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I think XFCE4 strikes a good balance between performance and design.<br><\/strong>You&#8217;ll get the applications menu on the top left (I like that) and a dock with the main shortcuts at the bottom of the screen (you can customize it as you want).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation process is a little unusual, so I&#8217;ll give you all the steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install the XFCE4 meta-package using the <em>tasksel<\/em> tool.<br><\/strong><code>sudo tasksel<\/code><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"258\" class=\"wp-image-34534\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_tasksel.jpg\" alt=\"tasksel on bookworm\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_tasksel.jpg 1087w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_tasksel-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_tasksel-1024x377.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_tasksel-768x283.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br><span style=\"color: var(--global-palette4);\">Go down to <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--global-palette4);\">Xfce<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--global-palette4);\"> and mark it by pressing SPACE. Hit <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--global-palette4);\">Ok<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--global-palette4);\"> to finish.<\/span><br>The tool will now download and install the files needed. It&#8217;ll take awhile. Wait until it&#8217;s done.<br>(If it fails or times out, repeat the steps above, and it&#8217;ll resume where it left off.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modify display manager configuration<\/strong>:<br><code>sudo nano \/etc\/lightdm\/lightdm.conf<\/code><br>You&#8217;ll be switching to <em>lightdm<\/em>, which will let you change your desktop at login time.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Look for the line &#8220;greeter-session=pi-greeter-labwc&#8221; and change it to: <br><\/strong><code>greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comment out these lines by adding &#8220;#&#8221; in front of them<\/strong>:<br><code>#autologin-user=...<br>#autologin-session=LXDE-pi-labwc<\/code><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\" class=\"wp-image-34554\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_lightdm_conf-1.jpg\" alt=\"xfce lightdm.conf\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_lightdm_conf-1.jpg 890w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_lightdm_conf-1-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/xfce_lightdm_conf-1-768x371.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save &amp; exit (CTRL+X, Y, Enter)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reboot<\/strong><br><code>sudo reboot now<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Change your session to XFCE.<\/strong><br>When your system loads up, a graphical login box will appear.<br>Click on the icon at the top right and select <em>Xfce Session<\/em> from the dropdown.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"337\" class=\"wp-image-34895\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/xfce_session.jpg\" alt=\"lightdm choose xfce session\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/xfce_session.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/xfce_session-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/xfce_session-768x370.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Login with your username and password<\/strong>. That&#8217;s it\u2014you should be in XFCE!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;d like to stay on this desktop environment, you can uninstall the default one to free space on your SD card if needed:<br><code>sudo apt remove lxappearance lxde lxde-* lxinput lxmenu-data lxpanel lxpolkit lxrandr lxsession* lxsession lxshortcut lxtask lxterminal sudo apt-get install pistore<br>sudo apt autoremove<br>sudo apt autoclean<br>sudo reboot<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you prefer another desktop environment, have in mind that the Raspberry Pi is not a powerful computer. You may have performances issue, so choose what you want, but I prefer a light environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, you can check my tutorial here on <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/pimp-my-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2628\">how to install any desktop environment on Raspberry Pi<\/a> if you want to try other ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"guake-terminal\">Guake Terminal<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake.jpg\" alt=\"guake terminal\" class=\"wp-image-867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake.jpg 900w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake-768x371.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake-100x48.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guake-864x418.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/guake.github.io\/\">Guake<\/a> is a terminal that works like any terminal.<br>But you can bring it up with a keyboard shortcut, and hit hide with the same key.<br><\/strong>So if you hit F12, the drop-down terminal comes to the foreground, if you hit F12 again the terminal disappears (but keeps running).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s okay to let something run behind, like an error log display of real-time information.<br>I often use this to display htop in Guake (process list and system load).<br>Every time I have slow performance, I just&nbsp;hit F12, and htop appears (Don&#8217;t know what htop is? <a data-lasso-id=\"2629\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-commands\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check my command cheat sheet here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tool is particularly&nbsp;useful on a Raspberry Pi when you don&#8217;t always have a good mouse.<br>Usually, I have a good Bluetooth keyboard (see <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-gear\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"2630\">my recommended products<\/a> page), but it&#8217;s a tactile mouse on it, which is not the best to browse the menu and find the terminal.<br>So Guake helps me a lot with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use it, you have to&nbsp;start it first from the Applications menu &gt; Accessories &gt; Guake terminal. Guake will run in the background until you call it with F12. You can also click on the system tray icon to open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"terminator\">Terminator<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split-1024x380.jpg\" alt=\"terminator showing split screen\" class=\"wp-image-34327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split-1024x380.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split-768x285.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split-1536x571.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/terminator_split.jpg 1682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gnome-terminator.org\/\">Terminator<\/a> is a terminal manager that lets you add and close multiple terminals in a grid.<br><\/strong>Guake is good for one command running behind, but Terminator is useful during active work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wordpress-on-raspberry-pi\/\">install WordPress on your Raspberry Pi<\/a> (or wherever), you can have a window displaying logs, one in the Apache folder for the configuration and another in the www folder for WordPress configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rather than switch between windows, Terminator allows you to display them all simultaneously.<br><\/strong>You can split windows, close them or add a&nbsp;new one. You can also resize any windows.<br>Simultaneous typing is also possible, as well as grid export.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a great tool on Linux. I often use it for complicated things.<br>If you master the commands that any Raspberry Pi users should know (<a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-commands\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2631\">check my shortlist here<\/a>), you&#8217;ll love this tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vivaldi\">Brave<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/brave_browser-1-1024x690.jpg\" alt=\"brave browser raspberry pi\" class=\"wp-image-34528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/brave_browser-1-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/brave_browser-1-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/brave_browser-1-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/brave_browser-1.jpg 1142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/brave.com\/\">Brave<\/a> is a good web browser that&#8217;s fully compatible with your Raspberry Pi.<br><\/strong>I&#8217;ll introduce this browser because you probably already know about Chromium and Firefox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brave is an open-source browser developed by Brave Software Inc and is independently. If you&#8217;re familiar with Chromium, you&#8217;ll probably know how to use Brave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, but why install Brave over Chromium or Firefox? One good reason is that Brave <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-pi-hole-ad-blocker\/\">blocks ads and trackers<\/a> by default, so there&#8217;s less to load and more privacy protection. To install Brave on your Raspberry Pi, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-brave-browser-raspberry-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">follow our step by step guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On my first test, Brave seemed quicker than Chromium or Firefox, so I used it for a few hours.<br>But in the end, I re-compared everything, and the difference wasn&#8217;t so obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anyway, I think you can use the browser you want. They all have similar features.<br><\/strong>And most of the time, I think you will keep the one that&nbsp;you usually use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I had used the Raspberry Pi as my computer longer, I would have chosen the browser that I have all my preferences saved in the cloud (bookmarks, extensions, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-bitwarden-on-raspberry-pi\/\">passwords<\/a>, &#8230;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">If you really want the &#8220;best&#8221; web browser for you, <a data-lasso-id=\"2634\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-web-browsers-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read this article<\/a> where I compare all of them. I tested them all and share with you my recommendation. There is no perfect solution for anyone, it depends on what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"thunderbird\">Thunderbird<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/thunderbird_new_acct-1024x476.jpg\" alt=\"thunderbird email client\" class=\"wp-image-34329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/thunderbird_new_acct-1024x476.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/thunderbird_new_acct-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/thunderbird_new_acct-768x357.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/thunderbird_new_acct.jpg 1120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m not a big fan of desktop email clients.<br>I usually prefer webmail like Gmail or Outlook.com.<br>But if you want to use your Raspberry Pi as your desktop PC, you may need one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thunderbird is one of the best email clients on Linux and is available on Raspberry Pi OS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use it with any email provider (POP\/IMAP) and also manage other feeds on it like RSS or newsgroups. By default, there is an integrated calendar, and you can add many extensions that are downloadable on the <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.thunderbird.net\/thunderbird\/\">official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t forget that if your Pi runs from an SD card, and you have an account with 30GB of emails, you&#8217;ll quickly run out of space. Its appearance and notifications work fine, whatever your desktop environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can install Pidgin straight from the official repository. It&#8217;s not illegal if you download files legally.<br>For example, Raspberry Pi OS images are available for torrent download, and often it&#8217;s faster than HTTP download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I like Deluge because it&#8217;s a simple app at first look, but with many hidden options.<br><\/strong>So for beginners, just grab your .torrent file and open it in Deluge. The download will start. Done.<br>For others, you&#8217;ll find a ton of features in the app menu, like a web interface or a console manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deluge and Raspberry are an exciting couple.<br>If you have many files to download (or big files), you can manage this with your Raspberry Pi, stop your usual computer, go to sleep and get all files downloaded in the morning.<br>This&nbsp;way you&#8217;ll save energy. And the web interface will be great for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alternatives<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/torrent-box-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18677\">Turn Your Raspberry Pi Into a Torrent Box (The 3 Best Apps)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vlc\">VLC<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/vlc.jpg\" alt=\"vlc media player\" class=\"wp-image-856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/vlc.jpg 606w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/vlc-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/vlc-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think that&nbsp;everyone knows VLC, but I have to put it on this list.<br><strong>VLC is an open-source media player, available on most platforms, including Raspberry Pi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a media file (.mkv, .avi, .mp3\/4, &#8230;) and open it with VLC.<br>Most of the time it&#8217;ll work, no codecs issues as it can read almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, it&#8217;s a classic media player, with all needed options, I don&#8217;t have much to add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are using your Raspberry Pi mostly as a media center, a better solution like <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/plex-media-server-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/plex-media-server-raspberry-pi\/\">Plex<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/jellyfin-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"20916\">Jellyfin<\/a> might be considered. They can access YouTube, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/watch-netflix-on-raspberry-pi\/\">Netflix<\/a>, and other streaming services too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"qmmp\">QMMP<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"712\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/qmmp.jpg\" alt=\"qmmp music play raspberry pi\" class=\"wp-image-868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/qmmp.jpg 712w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/qmmp-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/qmmp-100x58.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t really&nbsp;like the default music players in any Linux distribution. I find that apps like Audacious, Amarok, or Rhythmbox have an old-school look and take a lot of space on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/qmmp.ylsoftware.com\/\">QMMP<\/a> does just what we need: play music, with a playlist manager and equalizer.<br><\/strong>It has a similar look to Winamp for those who know. You can close any section if you don&#8217;t need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a lightweight app for the Raspberry Pi, which works fine and is available on the default repository. What&#8217;s more to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the main usage of your Raspberry Pi is a music player, I would recommend taking a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/play-spotify-on-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"2640\">these other options I have tested here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mypaint\">MyPaint<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mypaint_mp-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"mypaint editing an image\" class=\"wp-image-34336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mypaint_mp-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mypaint_mp-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mypaint_mp-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mypaint_mp.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confession: I don&#8217;t like GIMP at all.<br>Generally, I use Photoshop (with Windows or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-wine-raspberry-pi\/\">Wine<\/a>) or Krita (on my Ubuntu computer). I use these tools to make quick modifications to pictures like adding text, resizing, or cropping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with GIMP, every time I tried, I wasted a lot of time with its dumb interface :).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So on Linux, I usually install Krita, which is an excellent tool for these kinds of small edits.<br>But Krita isn&#8217;t available on Raspberry Pi OS, so I have to find another tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypaint.app\/en\/\">MyPaint<\/a>, which seems to do what I want.<br>In\u00a0a small interface, you&#8217;ll get all the needed stuff in the main toolbar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, on hardware like the Raspberry Pi, there is no way to install Photoshop or Wine, so you will have to&nbsp;deal with basic software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"libreoffice\">LibreOffice<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/libreoffice.jpg\" alt=\"libreoffice office alternative\" class=\"wp-image-858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/libreoffice.jpg 862w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/libreoffice-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/libreoffice-768x678.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/libreoffice-100x88.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice<\/a> is almost the only decent alternative to Microsoft Office on Linux.<br><\/strong>I&#8217;m not familiar with Office 365. If you have an account, maybe you can use the online version on your Raspberry Pi. But if you are looking for installed software, LibreOffice will do the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LibreOffice is an entire suite of tools, like the Microsoft one:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Microsoft Word =&gt; LibreOffice Writer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/excel-alternatives-for-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/excel-alternatives-for-raspberry-pi\/\">Microsoft Excel<\/a> =&gt; LibreOffice Calc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft PowerPoint =&gt; LibreOffice Impress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interface changes&nbsp;a bit, but globally you should quickly find the main tools on LibreOffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By default, new files are saved into an OpenDocument format, with a .odt or&nbsp;.ods extension.<br>But you can choose to&nbsp;save it as .doc or .xls to keep compatibility with another computer if needed (you can also install LibreOffice on any other computer if you want).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zim\">Obsidian<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/obsidian_bookworm-1024x431.jpg\" alt=\"obsidian note-taking app on raspberry pi os bookworm\" class=\"wp-image-34529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/obsidian_bookworm-1024x431.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/obsidian_bookworm-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/obsidian_bookworm-768x323.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/obsidian_bookworm.jpg 1319w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/obsidian.md\/\">Obsidian<\/a> is not just a note-taking app or a way to create your own Wiki (although it&#8217;s great at these tasks). It also has powerful plugins to do everything else you can imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, it&#8217;s only useful if you want to avoid using online tools like OneNote, Evernote, or other alternatives. I tend to prefer them as it&#8217;s all synced with my other computers, phone, and tablet. But it&#8217;s your choice, I understand if you prefer keeping your data away from these giant companies :).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easiest way to get Obsidian is via Pi-Apps. It&#8217;s an app store where you can download software not found in the official repo, like <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-minecraft-java-raspberry-pi\/\">Minecraft Java<\/a>. Anyway, here&#8217;s how to install Obsidian:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install Pi-Apps<\/strong>.<br><code>wget -qO- https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/Botspot\/pi-apps\/master\/install | bash<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Pi-Apps, go to Office &gt; Obsidian, and then click Install<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, Obsidian does an impressive job at this, you can create unlimited pages and subpages, all the formatting is available as with other similar tools. The only thing I haven&#8217;t found is how to resize images; maybe it&#8217;s possible, but if not, you may have to use a tool like &#8220;MyPaint&#8221; first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"homebank\">HomeBank<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-1024x628.jpg\" alt=\"homebank cash manager\" class=\"wp-image-874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-1024x628.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-768x471.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-100x61.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank-864x530.jpg 864w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/homebank.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the last Microsoft Office tool alternative we don&#8217;t see is Money.<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gethomebank.org\/\">HomeBank<\/a> is a light tool to manage your bank accounts.<br><\/strong>I didn&#8217;t use it a ton over two days, but it seemed to work fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tool analyzes your personal finance and budget, with a nice interface, including charts.<br><strong>Most of the time, it&#8217;s possible to export data from your bank and upload it into HomeBank.<br><\/strong>Then you can categorize each transaction, add notes, make your bank reconciliation, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your data is easy to export, so it won&#8217;t be lost. I used it at work for over a year without problems, so it must be enough for home projects :).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I needed to install Visual Studio Code on my Raspberry Pi during my two-day test to use it as my primary desktop PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visual Studio Code is now available directly in the &#8220;Recommended Software&#8221; tool. You can install it easily now, no need to install it from sources or a random GitHub project. After installation, you&#8217;ll find the shortcut in the main menu, under the &#8220;Programming&#8221; section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visual Studio Code is not the only option. On the other hand, everything was slow, and overall the Raspberry Pi was only useful for a single task (even multi-tab browsing was a pain).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes, you can give a Raspberry Pi to a kid or someone who doesn&#8217;t need a computer often. Or if grandparents are checking their emails once or twice a week, they don&#8217;t need a $500 computer to do this, a Raspberry Pi can be useful and save money.
