But there are so many projects out there that it can quickly become overwhelming. What can I do with a Raspberry Pi to make my home smart? That&#8217;s why I made a list of the best projects you need to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We often imagine a smart home with automatic lights and screens everywhere. Kodi allows you to access local files from the Raspberry Pi or other devices on your network (NAS and computer shares).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also install additional add-ons on Kodi, just like on your phone. For example, the YouTube app is an add-on you can install on Kodi to play YouTube videos on your old TV. You can buy a Starter Kit with a controller and two bulbs (<a data-lasso-id=\"1571\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B09BS8M98Q\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check the price on Amazon<\/a>) that you can control with a smartphone app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My brother gave me a pack for my birthday years ago, and I&#8217;ve been using them ever since. It&#8217;s an excellent product, I really like it, and a Raspberry Pi can make it even more fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For typical users, the app allows you to do several things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn lights on\/off on demand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dim lights in-app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a timer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create routines to switch lights on\/off at specific times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manage lighting scenarios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you&#8217;re not a typical user, I guess :-). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Philips also provides an API on the controller to develop scripts to manage lighting scenarios<\/strong>. And you probably already understand the purpose of this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the link below, I&#8217;ll show you how to control your Philips lights from Raspberry Pi using Python and their API. Check it out if you want to make progress with Python and Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 &#8211; Live Calendar<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar.jpg\" alt=\"smart live calendar\" class=\"wp-image-676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar.jpg 900w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar-768x381.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar-100x50.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/calendar-864x429.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Another cheap project you can try is to turn your old computer screen into a smart calendar.<\/strong> This&nbsp;<span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5;\">project&nbsp;<\/span>is also easy to build. It&#8217;s mainly DIY with not-so-complicated technical things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see in the picture, a Raspberry Pi is connected to a monitor running Raspberry Pi OS and a web browser to open the calendar in full-screen mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, you can make minor adjustments to hide the mouse cursor and <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/disable-sleep-mode-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9513\">disable sleep mode<\/a> or screen blanking. But that&#8217;s basically it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your calendar is empty and you don&#8217;t see the point of this project, think of other things you might be more interested in: it could be a web page (<a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/fullpageos-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32005\">with FullPageOS being a good solution for that<\/a>), data from an API, news, sports scores, or whatever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have some web development skills, why not create your own website with the information you are interested in (weather, emails, Facebook\/Twitter counters, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-camera-as-webcam\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1575\">a live webcam<\/a>, your sales stats or whatever).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find the original project on <a data-lasso-id=\"1573\" href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Raspberry-Pi-Wall-Mounted-Google-Calendar\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Instructables<\/a>, and build your own from there. <br>Check my tutorial about <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-dakboard-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26273\">DAKboard<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/digital-signage-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1978\">Anthias<\/a> for distributions that are a good fit for that kind of project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 &#8211; Plug an Old Printer into the Network<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer.jpg\" alt=\"dumb printer\" class=\"wp-image-679\" style=\"width:auto;height:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer.jpg 899w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer-100x64.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/printer-864x553.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still have a printer that needs to be connected to your computer all the time, you might be interested in this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can connect any printer to a Raspberry Pi, which will then share that printer on the network (via cable or Wi-Fi, depending on the model you have).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project is simple: install the software (CUPS) that will act as a print server. Then install the printer on CUPS and finally access the printer from all your other computers as if it were a modern printer directly connected to the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For less than $50, you can turn your old printer into a Wi-Fi printer. It will turn you into an expert in no time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 &#8211; Magic Mirror<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"711\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror.jpg\" alt=\"magic mirror raspberry pi\" class=\"wp-image-678\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror.jpg 900w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror-768x607.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror-100x79.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mirror-864x683.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project is well known to Raspberry Pi users, so it has its place on this list. <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteeuw.nl\/post\/80391333672\/magic-mirror-part-i-the-idea-the-mirror\">Michael Teeuw<\/a> was the first to develop this idea, which was then picked up by hundreds of people he inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The concept idea is to put a mirror, a TV screen and a Raspberry Pi inside a frame.<\/strong> The result is extraordinary, a smart mirror that, as you can see in the photo, allows you to integrate just about anything you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mirror itself is a special two-way glass that shows the text on the screen while reflecting the image like a classic mirror (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B09SBX9JS2\/\">you can find that on Amazon, for example<\/a>). This&nbsp;glass is typically the kind of&nbsp;glass found in police interrogation rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software side is not complicated either, I have a tutorial on <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/magic-mirror-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9776\">how to set everything up to build your own Magic Mirror<\/a>. Click on the link to learn more about this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 &#8211; Smart Button<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton.jpg\" alt=\"smart button raspberry\" class=\"wp-image-677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton.jpg 900w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton-100x51.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/smartbutton-864x445.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not necessarily a whole project, but more of a starting point. <strong>You can have a smart button that pushes what you want when you want it.<\/strong> It&#8217;s the perfect tool to turn any dumb device into a smart one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you can use it to turn on the lights, start the coffee maker, open the garage door, or whatever. You can even use it to press a key on your computer if you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The default use for this type of button is to control it from an app on your smartphone. But like the smart lights I mentioned earlier, you can also control it from your Raspberry Pi if you want to integrate it into a more meaningful project (e.g., start the air conditioner when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This button is awesome and available at a very affordable price (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07B7NXV4R\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">check the price on Amazon<\/a>). It can save you a lot of time and money for some projects, so it&#8217;s probably worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find the documentation for the API on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/OpenWonderLabs\/SwitchBotAPI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this GitHub project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 &#8211; Desktop Notifier<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier.jpg\" alt=\"raspberry desktop notifier\" class=\"wp-image-658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier.jpg 900w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier-768x369.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier-100x48.jpg 100w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/desktop-notifier-864x415.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The purpose of this project is to create a desktop notification manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project demonstrated here shows the number of pending emails and fans on your Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the number of pending Facebook notifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, it&#8217;s mainly a coding project to get the values from different web services (Facebook, Twitter, Gmail). And then some electronics to display these values on the LEDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to modify this project to show the counters you are interested in, but it is a good start and easy to set up. You can use it as a baby monitoring system, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the previous project ideas, it is not cheaper than a commercial product, but much more interesting to set up.
