Fortunately, developers have created modern alternatives that are often faster, more attractive, and easier to use. Today, I&#8217;ll show you my favorite ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Productivity in the Linux terminal can be significantly improved by using modern command\u2011line tools for faster execution, better visual feedback, and smarter defaults to improve everyday tasks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me show you a list of modern command-line tools you might know about, so you can retire the traditional and old ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eza (instead of ls and exa)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/eza-community\/eza\">eza<\/a> is a modern, colorful and cool alternative for your classic <em>ls<\/em> command. <\/strong><br><strong>It offers features like icons, git integrations, and recursive directories.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s already an existing tool called exa, but compared to that one, eza is still maintained and includes more functionality out of the box. It can improve your user experience with built-in features like syntax highlighting, Git diffs, line numbers, and paging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s useful for code, config files, or long text files. If you want to use it like the standard <em>cat<\/em> command, add this alias to your shell config:<br><code>alias bat='batcat'<\/code><br><br>Add it to your .bashrc, .zshrc, or relevant config file to make it permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a powerful Linux command that not everyone knows about. Give yourself a chance to explore other tools as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">btop or htop (instead of top)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You\u2019ve probably used <em>top<\/em> before. It shows disk usage using a tree layout with color bars, making it easy to see what&#8217;s eating your storage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of reading raw numbers, you can instantly spot large folders and files. You can find the different options in packages on their <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bootandy\/dust\/releases\">GitHub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having tools like Dust can be useful for troubleshooting what&#8217;s slowing down your system. <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/check-linux-performance\/\">There are also other performance tools<\/a> that can help you identify the main source of your problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">fd (instead of find)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/sharkdp\/fd\">fd<\/a> is a simpler, faster alternative to find. It keeps the same idea but removes most of the pain: no weird syntax, and no endless flags.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It works great for everyday file searches and scripting. You can even use it on your <a href=\"https:\/\/tldr.inbrowser.app\/\">browser<\/a> in case you don&#8217;t want to install anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">zoxide (instead of cd)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ajeetdsouza\/zoxide\">zoxide<\/a> is a smarter way to move around your filesystem.
