(Video Capture)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I use OBS Studio on my PC for almost every RaspberryTips video, so I wanted to see if it could also run on a Raspberry Pi. I didn\u2019t expect miracles, but with newer Pi models, basic screen recording and video capture are now possible. If you want to record your Raspberry Pi desktop or stream something, here\u2019s how to install it and get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBS Studio can now be installed directly <strong>on Raspberry Pi OS <\/strong>from the default repository by using the package manager. As I use OBS Studio on my computer to record my YouTube and community videos, I was curious to see how it works on Raspberry Pi OS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"obs-studio-on-raspberry-pi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">OBS Studio on Raspberry Pi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBS Studio is available for any operating system.<\/strong> You can find binaries for Windows and macOS on the home page, and it&#8217;s available in the default repositories in most Linux distributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re using the <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-raspbian-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"587\">latest Raspberry Pi OS<\/a> (trixie), <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-os-versions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13288\">Raspberry Pi OS Legacy<\/a> (bookworm), or one version older (bullseye), then OBS Studio is available in the default repository, and the installation is pretty straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you&#8217;re using an older OS release (buster or older), it&#8217;s a bit different. One solution was to compile the application from source, but the process was long, complicated, and the instructions became quickly obsolete when the source code changed. Therefore, if you&#8217;re using an old Raspberry Pi OS release, the easiest option is to use Pi-Apps to do everything for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll be covering installation methods for both new and old releases in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware Prerequisites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBS Studio is not really optimized for Raspberry Pi<\/strong>, so I strongly recommend a <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/amz\/pi5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/amz\/pi5\">Raspberry Pi 5<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07TC2BK1X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pi 4 with 4&nbsp;GB memory<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0899VXM8F\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pi 4 with 8&nbsp;GB memory<\/a> to follow this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you want to try on Raspberry Pi 3B+, it could work if you create a swap file <\/strong>(I didn&#8217;t use swap in my tests on Pi 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s how to create a swap file (in a terminal or via SSH):<br><code>sudo dd if=\/dev\/zero of=\/var\/swap2 bs=1024 count=1000000<br>sudo chmod 600 \/var\/swap2<br>sudo mkswap \/var\/swap2<br>sudo swapon \/var\/swap2<br>sudo swapon<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with a Raspberry Pi 4, OBS Studio is pretty heavy and will easily use 100% of your CPU and a big chunk of memory. So be patient if you try it on an older device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/why-swap-is-used-in-linux\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10333\">Why is Swap Used In Linux? (Goal, Requirements, and Commands)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"install-obs-studio\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install OBS Studio on Raspberry Pi OS (Recent Versions)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re using a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-os-versions\/\">Raspberry Pi OS Desktop<\/a> release within the last 5 years (codename <em>trixie<\/em>, <em>bookworm<\/em>, or <em>bullseye<\/em>), then OBS Studio is available directly in the package manager. You&#8217;ll need to install some dependencies first, followed by the main OBS package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install FFmpeg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FDK AAC package is a prerequisite for OBS Studio. FDK AAC is the FFmpeg encoder for the AAC format. It&#8217;s the successor of MP3, often used in MP4 streams, and required for OBS Studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On more recent Raspberry Pi OS versions, you can install it simply with:<br><code>sudo apt update<br>sudo apt install libfdk-aac2 libfdk-aac-dev<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I gave you the terminal commands, but you can also search for the package names in the &#8220;Add \/ Remove Software&#8221; tool if you prefer to use the GUI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install OBS Studio From the Official Repository<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then install the main package for OBS Studio with:<br><code>sudo apt install obs-studio<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"958\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/install_obs_studio_apt.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52325\" style=\"width:auto;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/install_obs_studio_apt.jpg 958w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/install_obs_studio_apt-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/install_obs_studio_apt-768x279.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 958px) 100vw, 958px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or if you prefer, you can also use the <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-apps-raspberry-pi\/\">Add \/ Remove Software tool<\/a> to install OBS Studio:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_trixie_install_obs.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52326\" style=\"width:auto;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_trixie_install_obs.jpg 890w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_trixie_install_obs-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_trixie_install_obs-768x325.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the other dependencies will be installed automatically. You&#8217;re done with installation, so you can skip the next section and go down  to the usage tips, where I help you to get started with this application.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install OBS Studio on Older Raspberry Pi OS Versions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re still running a very old release of Raspberry Pi OS, such as Buster or older, installing OBS Studio is not as straightforward. But don&#8217;t worry, I have an easy solution for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could try to download the sources and compile them manually, but frankly, it&#8217;s way easier to use Pi-Apps for this. At least it works all the time, and you only need one command to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Pi-Apps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#8217;t know, <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-apps.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pi-Apps<\/a> is a nice tool that allows you to install many applications in a few clicks, especially those that are not available in the package manager and are difficult to install manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To install Pi-Apps, open a terminal and paste this command:<br><code>wget -qO- https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/Botspot\/pi-apps\/master\/install | bash<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have a full video lesson <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/school\/community\/?coupon=IP25CTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inside the community<\/a> about Pi-Apps, but I&#8217;ll give you the short version here, just to show you how to use it to install OBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Pi-Apps to Install OBS Studio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once Pi-Apps is installed, you&#8217;ll have a shortcut on your Desktop (and in the main menu). Double-click to launch it, and go to the Multimedia category, where you&#8217;ll find OBS Studio:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"795\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/piapps_obs.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52329\" style=\"width:auto;height:450px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/piapps_obs.jpg 795w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/piapps_obs-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/piapps_obs-768x604.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select OBS Studio and click &#8220;Install&#8221;\u2014a terminal window will show up, but you don&#8217;t have to do anything. Pi-Apps will automatically install everything for you.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"147\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pi_apps_finished_obs.jpg\" alt=\"pi apps terminal showing it installing OBS studio\" class=\"wp-image-31475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pi_apps_finished_obs.jpg 642w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pi_apps_finished_obs-300x69.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few minutes later, OBS Studio will be ready to go, and you can read the next part to get started with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"obs-studio-tips-on-raspberry-pi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting Started with OBS Studio on Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you&#8217;ve got OBS Studio installed, it might take a little setup to get it working properly.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"first-run\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Run<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However you chose to install it, you can now start OBS Studio from the main menu: <br>Sound &amp; Video &gt; OBS Studio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"587\" height=\"241\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_menu_obs.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_menu_obs.jpg 587w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/rpios_menu_obs-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll likely get an error when you start it for the first time. I had it on all versions I tested, so I think it&#8217;s the same for everyone :-).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On both Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5, I get this error<\/strong>:<br><code>\"Failed to initialize video. If you don&#8217;t see it, you can start it by going to Tools &gt; Auto-Configuration Wizard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend using the wizard so you don&#8217;t have to change anything else to get started. Answer the few questions (keep the default values if you have no idea) and OBS will run a test to configure everything. For example, you can use OBS to stream your desktop and use your camera to show your face in a corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these settings can be changed by clicking on the &#8220;Settings&#8221; button on the right (general, stream to Twitch, output quality and format, shortcuts, etc.).
