But if you want to keep it compact by using a touch screen, or if your Pi doesn&#8217;t have a keyboard, how can you type? In this situation, an on-screen or virtual keyboard can be very useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS, there&#8217;s a built-in onscreen keyboard that can be enabled in the Control Centre. After turning it on, the virtual keyboard can be brought up by clicking the keyboard icon in the top right of the desktop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s particularly convenient for touchscreens, like <a data-lasso-id=\"1224\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspad-3-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the RasPad 3<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/sunfounder-ts10-review\/\">SunFounder TS-10<\/a> I&#8217;ve tested. It&#8217;s like making an iPad with a Raspberry Pi inside. It\u2019s a great resource to have by your side. <a rel='noopener' href='https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=begpost&#038;lm=1' target='_blank'><b>Get your free copy here<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updating Raspberry Pi OS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this step, you&#8217;ll want to make sure you have a graphical desktop environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Raspberry Pi OS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, <strong>the first step is to install an operating system on your Raspberry Pi<\/strong>. If you need some help installing Raspberry Pi OS, you can read <a data-lasso-id=\"1225\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-raspbian-raspberry-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my detailed tutorial here<\/a>. The Desktop version is required to install the virtual screen on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/upgrade-raspberry-pi-os-bookworm\/\">most recent Raspberry Pi OS release<\/a> (Trixie) has improved touchscreen support, so you&#8217;ll definitely want to take advantage of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, if you don&#8217;t have a keyboard at home, you might get stuck during the configuration. How do you configure the network or complete the welcome wizard without a keyboard?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why this tutorial for a <a data-lasso-id=\"1226\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-headless-setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headless installation on Raspberry Pi Zero<\/a> will probably help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll learn how to configure the network and enable SSH from your computer, so you don&#8217;t need a keyboard. I often use this method when I create a new SD card, even if I have <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-raspberry-pi-keyboard\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a good wireless keyboard<\/a>. This saves time on each installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update the System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your operating system is installed, there&#8217;s one more step. As I mentioned, <strong>the package is available in the default Raspberry Pi OS repository<\/strong>. So, it&#8217;s a good idea to start by updating your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here are the commands to update all packages from a terminal:<br><\/strong><code>sudo apt update<br>sudo apt upgrade<br>sudo reboot<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can also do this in the &#8220;Add\/Remove Software&#8221; tool if you prefer:<br><\/strong>Go to the main menu &gt; Preferences &gt; Add\/Remove Software.<br>Then click on Options &gt; Check for Updates and upgrade everything.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/add_remove_software_trixie-1024x404.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/add_remove_software_trixie-1024x404.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/add_remove_software_trixie-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/add_remove_software_trixie-768x303.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/add_remove_software_trixie.jpg 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enable SSH (Optional)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use a touch screen or don&#8217;t have a keyboard,<strong> it&#8217;s probably a good idea to enable SSH on your Raspberry Pi<\/strong> (if you didn&#8217;t already do it during the installation, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-imager-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as explained here<\/a>). This way, you can install and configure new packages from your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This step is optional, but here&#8217;s how to do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the main menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>Preferences &gt; Control Centre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the <strong>Interfaces<\/strong> tab, enable SSH.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"205\" class=\"wp-image-44905\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_ssh_desktop.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_ssh_desktop.jpg 771w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_ssh_desktop-300x102.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_ssh_desktop-768x262.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can now connect to your Raspberry Pi from your computer.<br><\/strong>On Windows, you need a software like <a href=\"https:\/\/termius.com\/index.html\">Termius<\/a> or <a data-lasso-id=\"1228\" href=\"https:\/\/putty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Putty<\/a>.<br>On Linux, you can use a terminal with the command: <code>ssh &lt;username&gt;@&lt;ip&gt;<\/code><br>You&#8217;ll find more details on SSH <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/ssh-guide-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in this tutorial<\/a> if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enabling the Virtual Keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you have an updated desktop, we can finally install the virtual keyboard. I will show you how to do this with two methods: directly on Raspberry Pi OS with Desktop or via SSH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation on Raspberry Pi OS Desktop<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good news, the virtual keyboard is installed by default on Raspberry Pi OS Desktop (Trixie). <br>All you need to do is enable it: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the main menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>Preferences &gt; Control Centre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the <strong>Display<\/strong> tab, you&#8217;ll find the onscreen keyboard settings.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"185\" class=\"wp-image-46192\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_trixie.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_trixie.jpg 984w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_trixie-300x93.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_trixie-768x237.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br>By default, it&#8217;s enabled only if you&#8217;re using a touchscreen. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To make the virtual keyboard always available, change the <strong>On-screen Keyboard<\/strong> dropdown to <strong>Enabled Always<\/strong>.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"98\" class=\"wp-image-46193\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_always.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_always.jpg 741w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_always-300x49.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget to explicitly set the <strong>On-Screen Keyboard Location<\/strong>. <br>Select from the dropdown which monitor you want it to appear on.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"65\" class=\"wp-image-46194\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_hdmi.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_hdmi.jpg 743w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/onscreen_keyboard_hdmi-300x33.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br>(If you&#8217;re not sure which monitor, go to the <strong>Screens<\/strong> tab to identify them.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can now exit this tool and skip directly to the section on using the virtual keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation via SSH<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#8217;t have a keyboard available, you can also install the package remotely from a different computer, if SSH is enabled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Connect to the Raspberry Pi with SSH.<br><\/strong>(<a data-lasso-id=\"1230\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/ssh-password-raspberry-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check this post if you need some help<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspi-config-guide\/\">raspi-config tool<\/a>:<br><\/strong><code>sudo raspi-config<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Display Options &gt; Onscreen Keyboard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Always On<\/strong> and press ENTER to enable it.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"129\" class=\"wp-image-46195\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/raspi_config_onscreen_keyboard.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/raspi_config_onscreen_keyboard.jpg 714w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/raspi_config_onscreen_keyboard-300x65.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>Finish<\/strong> at the bottom to exit the tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s it! You can now switch back to the Raspberry Pi screen and read the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the Virtual Keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you&#8217;ve enabled the virtual keyboard, in this section, I&#8217;ll show you how to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open the Keyboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once it&#8217;s enabled, a keyboard icon will show up&nbsp;in the top right of the desktop: <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46196\" style=\"width:auto;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon-1536x862.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/virtual_keyboard_icon.jpg 1922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clicking on the keyboard icon will make the virtual keyboard appear at the bottom of your desktop. It also will automatically appear if you&#8217;re using any programs that ask for keyboard input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, the usage is intuitive (it&#8217;s really similar to a smartphone keyboard). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autostart with Raspberry Pi OS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In older versions of this tutorial, we had to jump through hoops to get the virtual keyboard to appear again on reboot. Not so anymore with the new Trixie release. You now know how to install an on-screen keyboard on your Raspberry Pi.<br>In general, I prefer using a wireless keyboard (<a data-lasso-id=\"1231\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wireless-keyboard-and-mouse-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as explained here<\/a>), but this solution may help if you have no other choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, you can also use <a rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1232\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-anydesk-on-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9375\" target=\"_blank\">a remote access tool like Anydesk <\/a>to control your Pi from your computer, or any other remote desktop solutions (<a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/remote-desktop-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I list my favorites one here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope this post was useful for you. Ultimately, it&#8217;s probably better to get a keyboard for your Raspberry Pi if you start being serious with it.
