But did you know that the Raspberry Pi now also has a PCIe slot? If you&#8217;re wondering what you can use it for, then you&#8217;re in the right place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Raspberry Pi 5 has a PCIe connector on board. It can be used to add storage, network adapters, AV cards, and other high-speed peripherals. These add-ons expand the types of projects the Raspberry Pi can take on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me show you some examples of what&#8217;s possible. These support convenient plug-and-play devices you might also use on a regular PC, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-raspberry-pi-keyboard\/\">wireless keyboard<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/add-microphone-raspberry-pi\/\">microphone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second way to add functionality might be less obvious to newcomers, and that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-gpio-pinout\/\">the GPIO pins<\/a>. They let your Pi interface with electronic circuits, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-raspberry-pi-hats\/\">wear HATs<\/a>, or even transform into a <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/gpi-case-2w-review\/\">retro Game Boy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if two ways to add peripherals weren&#8217;t enough, the Raspberry Pi has now introduced a third interface: PCI Express.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do we need a third way to add peripherals? Although USB is great for universality and GPIO is great for custom electronics, <strong>the PCIe interface allows you to add devices that require higher bandwidth<\/strong>. Although the Raspberry Pi 4 used PCIe internally, there was no external connector, so you couldn&#8217;t add stuff yet. This all changed with the Raspberry Pi 5 and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/news\/rp1-the-silicon-controlling-raspberry-pi-5-i-o-designed-here-at-raspberry-pi\/\">RP1 controller<\/a>, which led to adding an external PCIe interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Raspberry Pi 5 is the first mainline board to have an exposed PCIe connector<\/strong>.<br>Here&#8217;s a table summarizing which Raspberry Pi models have a usable PCIe interface:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Board<\/th><th>PCIe Interface<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/amz\/pi5\">Raspberry Pi 5<\/a><\/td><td>&#8211; PCIe slot on board.<br>&#8211; PCIe Gen2 x 1 lane.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/what-is-raspberry-pi-compute-module\/\">Compute Module 5<\/a><\/td><td>&#8211; Requires a separate carrier board for PCIe.<br>&#8211; PCIe Gen2 x 1 lane.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Compute Module 4<\/td><td>&#8211; Requires a separate carrier board for PCIe.<br>&#8211; PCIe Gen2 x 1 lane.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PCIe slot on the Raspberry Pi 5 unlocks the possibility to connect more powerful expansion cards, even ones that weren&#8217;t made specifically for the Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Do I Need to Use PCIe on Raspberry Pi?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To take advantage of PCIe on the Raspberry Pi, you only need 3 pieces of hardware:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Raspberry Pi board with a PCIe interface (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/amz\/pi5\">Raspberry Pi 5<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A PCIe adapter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A compatible PCIe peripheral device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you need a device and a way to connect it to the Pi. There are two common options for the PCIe adapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The first way to connect is via a PCIe ribbon cable<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re adding something that was made specifically for the Raspberry Pi 5, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/what-is-raspberry-pi-ai-kit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32682\">Raspberry Pi AI Kit<\/a>. For example, putting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0CRDY6Q3C\/\">the official M.2 HAT<\/a> on your Raspberry Pi 5 gives it an M.2 slot that\u2019s commonly found on PC motherboards. Others may be as easy as installing a package from your system&#8217;s default repo. Lastly, some devices require downloading and configuring drivers manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: Not all expansion cards will work on Raspberry Pi. The best compatibility list that I know of is the <a href=\"https:\/\/pipci.jeffgeerling.com\/\">Raspberry Pi PCIe database<\/a>. It lets you see which devices have been confirmed to work and which ones are still being tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Case Examples for PCIe Devices on Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you understand how to add PCIe devices to a Raspberry Pi, what can you do with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sky&#8217;s the limit, since this feature is still new, but let\u2019s discuss what\u2019s possible. Some of the use cases below are common ways to dramatically improve the Pi&#8217;s functionality, while others are interesting niche uses that you may not have realized were possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lightning-Fast NVMe SSD<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/m2-hat-completed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33787\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/m2-hat-completed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/m2-hat-completed-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/m2-hat-completed-768x485.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Raspberry Pi with NVMe SSD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Raspberry Pi uses an SD card for storage by default, and if you&#8217;ve ever read up on <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/best-sd-card-raspberry-pi\/\">our benchmarks<\/a>, you&#8217;ll know that most cap out at around 100 MB\/s, if you&#8217;re lucky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we have PCIe, however, you can use an NVMe SSD instead and get significantly faster transfer speeds. In my experience testing them out myself, <strong>an NVMe SSD on the Raspberry Pi 5 will let you hit speeds 4x to 8x faster than an SD card<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To add an NVMe SSD, you need to use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0D5CGDJLQ\/\">M.2 HAT<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0CT2MDV2D\/\">Pi case<\/a> that adds NVMe capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With improved responsiveness from an NVMe SSD, the Raspberry Pi 5 is much more viable as a portable desktop. It\u2019s a janky setup, but you can connect a powerful GPU normally meant for PCs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0C5S9CHMG\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0C5S9CHMG\/\">like this RX 7600<\/a>) to your Raspberry Pi. With this extra graphical horsepower, you can use it to play games in HD with Steam, create 3D models, or use it for LLM projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t forget that you&#8217;ll need extra connectors, like an M.2-to-OCuLink port adapter, to hook everything together. You\u2019ll also need a separate power supply for the GPU to get enough juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truthfully, I&#8217;m not exactly sure what project you have in mind that would best be solved by adding a giant GPU to your tiny Pi. Maybe you need something with higher throughput, perhaps for gathering lots of data from different sensors for edge computing or running an access point <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-drone\/\">for a drone<\/a>. In these cases, speed is king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that you can add a better network card? The ones on a PC are added via PCIe expansion slots, and the Raspberry Pi works similarly. <strong>By attaching a PCIe network HAT, you can upgrade to 2.5 Gbps Ethernet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0D3KXKGBC\/\">like this one<\/a>) or Wi-Fi 7 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0DWF1SF7W\/\">like this one<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To hit these speeds, you must also have a high-powered network router that supports these technologies.
