But you do not necessarily have the budget for that? <span class=\"alt-edited\">Raspberry Pi allows you to do that at a lower cost, and I will give you all the details in this post<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To use a Raspberry Pi as a file server, a service named Samba is available. In this section, I&#8217;ll give you a quick overview of these points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">File Server Usage<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\"><strong>A file server is used to store and share files on the local network.<\/strong><br>This\u00a0server allows you, for example, to create automatic backups of your computer on this server<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">You can also store files that take up space on your computer but are not critical:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">Movies<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">Software<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">ISO files<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"\">Advantages<\/span> of Raspberry Pi as a File Server<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><lt-highlighter contenteditable=\"false\" style=\"display: none;\"><lt-div spellcheck=\"false\" class=\"lt-highlighter__wrapper\" style=\"width: 0px !important; height: 0px !important; transform: none !important; transform-origin: 0px 0px !important; zoom: 1 !important; margin-top: 3px !important;\"><lt-div class=\"lt-highlighter__scrollElement\" style=\"top: 0px !important; left: 0px !important;\"><\/lt-div><\/lt-div><\/lt-highlighter><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-gramm=\"false\" class=\"\"><strong>A standard NAS server, will cost over $300<\/strong> for the entry level, make noise, and consume a lot of electricity<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">A Raspberry Pi will cost you less than $50 and waste almost no power<\/span>.<br><\/strong><span class=\"\">You&#8217;ll need to factor in the price of a hard drive if you need a lot of space, or want to <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/nas-guide-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/nas-guide-raspberry-pi\/\">turn your Pi into a budget-friendly NAS<\/a>, but it&#8217;s still reasonable<\/span> compared to alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put A 2TB USB drive on it and you&#8217;re ready to go (<a data-lasso-id=\"336\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B079D3D8NR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check this one on Amazon<\/a>, the best value for money).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows you to add a small backup storage server <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/pi-projects-to-save-money\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/pi-projects-to-save-money\/\">to save money<\/a> while learning how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add Disk Space to Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you follow this guide only for testing, you do not necessarily need to read this section. It&#8217;s for those who don&#8217;t have enough space on their SD card and want more storage capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Larger SD Card<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The first possibility to expand your storage is to use a larger capacity SD card.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07P9W5HJV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sd-card-1TB.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sd-card-1TB.jpg 400w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sd-card-1TB-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SanDisk offers SD card up to 1TB now!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have an SD card of 8 or 16 GB at the moment, so it&#8217;s going to be a bit limited.<br>But there are SD cards that go up to 1 TB and for a reasonable price (<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B08HCPTMJG\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"337\">this one for example<\/a>).<br>It may be worthwhile to buy a larger SD card before following this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feel free to check <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-gear\/\" data-lasso-id=\"339\">my resources page<\/a> if you want to know which SD card I recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you choose this, there is nothing else to do technically than replacing the SD&nbsp;card in the drive. And then resume the rest of this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USB Hard Drive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Another way to expand storage is to connect an external USB drive to your Raspberry Pi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/external-drive-raspberry-pi-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"can you connect external hard drive to raspberry pi\" class=\"wp-image-20962\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:800px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/external-drive-raspberry-pi-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/external-drive-raspberry-pi-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/external-drive-raspberry-pi-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/external-drive-raspberry-pi.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the 2.5&#8243; format you should be able to find disks up to at least 2TB, which starts to be a better configuration for file sharing (<a data-lasso-id=\"340\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B079D3D8NR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I&#8217;m using this one for example<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also gives you the advantage of being able to bring it with you even if you&#8217;re not taking your Raspberry Pi. And so you can read the contents on any other PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most of the time, your hard drive will be recognized and mounted directly by Raspberry Pi OS.<br><\/strong>A mount point will be created in <strong>\/media\/$USER\/NAME<\/strong>, where $USER is your username and NAME is the volume label of your drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any issues, I recommend formatting your disk in a Linux file system (EXT4 for example) and try again. The <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/fdisk-linux-command\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"21736\">fdisk <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/mount-linux-command\/\">mount commands<\/a> could also help out in the worst cases.<br>I explain everything here if you need some help about <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/mount-usb-drive-raspberry-pi\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mounting a USB drive on Raspberry Pi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A SATA Hard Drive?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you want something professional, you can add a card to connect SATA hard drives to your Raspberry Pi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B091JSRQ9C\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This\u00a0card<\/a> will allow you to get closer to a classic NAS with faster, better-integrated disks and the ability to manage security with software RAID. This\u00a0implementation is a different type of project, so I&#8217;ll let you do your research and come back here once your disks are functional \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Raspberry Pi OS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we have our prerequisites completed:<br>&#8211; an SD card<br>&#8211; possibly additional storage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let&#8217;s move on to the installation of Raspberry Pi OS which will be the basis of our file server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fadce4\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you want to see all these steps in action, I have a video lesson available for the community members. <a OS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I recommend using Raspberry Pi Imager to install Raspberry Pi OS.<\/strong><br>If you have not installed it yet, get it from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/software\/\">the official website<\/a>.<br>It&#8217;s a tool that allows you to flash an SD card easily on Linux, Mac, or Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s how to flash an SD card with Raspberry Pi OS: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Launch Raspberry Pi Imager. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Choose OS<\/strong>, and select which Raspberry Pi OS edition you want.<br>Beginners should choose the default option (Desktop edition).<br>If your goal is only to have a file server, the Lite edition is enough, and you&#8217;ll save some disk space and CPU\/RAM. <br>Anyway we&#8217;ll be doing the rest of this tutorial via SSH, so your choice won&#8217;t change anything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Choose Storage<\/strong>, and point to your SD card. <br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" class=\"wp-image-41438\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rpios_lite_imager.jpg\" alt=\"raspberry pi imager flashing raspberry pi os lite\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rpios_lite_imager.jpg 751w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rpios_lite_imager-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong> to begin writing to the SD card. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When prompted to <strong>Apply OS Customisation<\/strong> settings, select No to accept the defaults. <br>Or, select Yes if you want to configure settings ahead of time. <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-imager-guide\/\">More details here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the SD card is ready, eject it, and insert in your Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Boot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation is automatic, you have to start your Raspberry Pi, and Raspberry Pi OS will start.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_welcome_launch.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_welcome_launch.jpg 636w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/trixie_welcome_launch-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you chose the Raspberry Pi OS Desktop edition, a welcome wizard will appear:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose your language preferences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change the default password<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect to the Wi-Fi if necessary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept system updates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reboot the Raspberry Pi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If everything worked fine, move on.<br>Otherwise, it will be necessary at least to succeed to connect the network and to change the password (the following paragraph can help you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you have the Lite version, you should do the same configuration, but within raspi-config.<\/strong><br><a data-lasso-id=\"345\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-raspbian-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I explain everything here<\/a> if you need some help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enable SSH<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SSH is a secure remote connection protocol, which allows you to launch commands from another computer on the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By default, the service is not started automatically on Raspberry Pi.<br>So we will <strong>enable SSH and connect to it<\/strong> before continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To enable SSH,\u00a0open a terminal and type this command:<br><code>sudo systemctl start ssh<br>sudo systemctl enable ssh<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once SSH is installed connect to it (ssh pi@IP).<br>If this is not easy for you, take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/ssh-password-raspberry-pi\/\" data-lasso-id=\"346\">this article<\/a> that will guide you through this.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install the File Server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that Raspberry Pi OS is ready\u00a0let&#8217;s get to the goal of this tutorial: creating a network share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organization of the File System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on what you initially chose as your storage medium, the paths will change a little later.<br><strong>So I&#8217;m going to assume that our available storage space is in \/media\/share<br><\/strong>Replace this with the right folder you have created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have chosen to share your files directly on the SD card, create a new folder of your choice (<em>\/media\/share<\/em> for example):<br><code>sudo mkdir \/media\/share<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re using USB external drives, you&#8217;ll probably create a mount point in <em>\/media\/$USER\/share<\/em> (where $USER is your username) or something similar.<br>More info here on <a data-lasso-id=\"347\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/mount-usb-drive-raspberry-pi\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to mount USB drives on Raspberry Pi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Samba<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Start by checking for updates:<br><\/strong><code>sudo apt update <br>sudo apt upgrade<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Then install Samba:<br><\/strong><code>sudo apt install samba<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once samba installed you should be able to access the Raspberry Pi with the file explorer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows:&nbsp; \\\\X.X.X.X<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Linux\/Mac:&nbsp; smb:\/\/X.X.X.X<br>On Linux, it might not be that easy to access a network drive. commands)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Replace X.X.X.X with the IP address of the Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for now, we do not see a shared folder, and we can&#8217;t create files.<br>Let&#8217;s see how to fix this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configure Samba for a Guest Share<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samba is now available, let&#8217;s go to the configuration.<br>The configuration will depend on what you want to do, but I&#8217;ll explain how to create basic sharing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Give all permissions to the folder <br><\/strong><code>sudo chmod 777 \/media\/share <\/code><br>(Make sure to change <em>\/media\/share<\/em> for these steps if you&#8217;re using a different folder.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edit the \/etc\/samba\/smb.conf file <br><\/strong><code>sudo nano \/etc\/samba\/smb.conf <\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add these lines at the end of the file <br><\/strong><code>[SharePi]  <br>comment = RaspberryPi <br>public = yes <br>writeable = yes <br>browsable = yes <br>path = \/media\/share <br>create mask = 0777 <br>directory mask = 0777 <\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save and leave (CTRL+X)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restart Samba to apply changes: <br><\/strong><code>sudo systemctl restart smbd<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Test Access<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now have a shared folder accessible to all without authentication.<br><strong>To verify that this works, connect to the network drive:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows:&nbsp;Open the file explorer (Win + E) and type the following address: \\\\X.X.X.X\\SharePi<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Linux\/Mac:&nbsp;Open the file explorer and type the following address: smb:\/\/X.X.X.X\/SharePi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure the folder opens, and that you can create files or folders and then delete them without permissions issues.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"871\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/samba_win11_access.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/samba_win11_access.jpg 871w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/samba_win11_access-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/samba_win11_access-768x246.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 871px) 100vw, 871px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If everything works, we can move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Permissions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, our share is accessible to anyone, even without a password.<br>If you don&#8217;t want your little sister to delete your backups, you will have to forbid guest access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Configuration<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To request a password when connecting, edit the public option in \/etc\/samba\/smb.conf:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted EnlighterJSRAW\">[SharePi] \ncomment = RaspberryPi\npublic = no\nwriteable = yes\nbrowsable = yes \npath = \/media\/share\ncreate mask = 0777\ndirectory mask = 0777<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must also tell samba that the user is allowed to connect to shares:<br><code>sudo smbpasswd -a pat<\/code><br>(Change &#8216;pat&#8217; to your username.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then restart Samba:<br><code>sudo systemctl restart smbd<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you try to connect again, it should open an authentication window.<br><\/strong>If this is not the case, check that you are not already connected in guest mode (first you must disconnect, it depends on your OS, so restart your computer if you can&#8217;t find).<br>On Ubuntu, I had to click on the &#8220;Eject&#8221; button in front of the mount in the file explorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add Another User<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If necessary, you can add other user accounts with different passwords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Create a new user:<br><\/strong><code>sudo adduser yourname<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allow samba access for it:<br><\/strong><code>sudo smbpasswd -a yourname<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can now connect with any of the users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But remember that we put everyone&#8217;s rights on the \/media\/share folder, so all users you create will have the same permissions.<br>If, for example, you want only the &#8220;pat&#8221; user to have access to the SharePi share, you will have to change it like this :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted EnlighterJSRAW\">chown pat \/media\/share -R<br>chmod 700 \/media\/share -R<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then create multiple shares by changing user permissions for each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, depending on the number of users and the type of files you host on your Raspberry Pi, <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-antivirus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8055\" data-lasso-id=\"348\">installing an antivirus on it might be somethin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-antivirus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"349\">g<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-antivirus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8055\" data-lasso-id=\"350\"> worth to consider<\/a>. Linux isn&#8217;t the most exposed operating system, but it can protect Windows users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn the Raspberry Pi into a Media Server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we have a network storage location, why don&#8217;t we use it to manage our downloads and make it accessible from our TV?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Torrent Server<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You probably know the Torrent protocol, which is a well-known protocol for downloading.<br>We will see how to install a torrent server on our Raspberry Pi to automate downloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Create a new folder for torrents to download:<br><\/strong><code>sudo mkdir \/media\/share\/torrents <br>sudo chmod 777 \/media\/share\/torrents<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rtorrent<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start by installing rtorrent and screen:<br><\/strong><code>sudo apt install rtorrent screen<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then create your configuration file:<br><code>nano ~\/.rtorrent.rc<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paste these lines:<br><code>directory = \/media\/share\/torrents<\/code><br>You can add all the options that interest you.
