I expected it to be complicated, but once I figured out the right streaming setup, it worked surprisingly well. You can even <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/reuse-old-pi-hardware\/\">repurpose old hardware<\/a> to use as a webcam for your Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are my current recommendations if don&#8217;t have everything yet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0CRSNCJ6Y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This Raspberry Pi model<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B09X19GZXX\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"596\">This Camera Module<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plug the Camera In<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You probably know how to do this if you have a camera, but don&#8217;t forget to plug it correctly on your Raspberry Pi. Remove the slot protector and plug the cable in as shown in this picture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/camera-cable.jpg\" alt=\"camera cable raspberry pi\" class=\"wp-image-491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/camera-cable.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/camera-cable-100x54.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need step-by-step instructions on how to do this, you can check my dedicated tutorial on <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-camera-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"597\">how to set up a camera on Raspberry Pi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Software Prerequisites for Raspberry Pi Webcam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK, now that you&#8217;ve got the hardware, you&#8217;re ready to install the key software, which is an operating system and the streaming software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Operating System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The easiest way to follow this tutorial will be to use the Raspberry Pi OS distribution. <\/strong>So if you don&#8217;t have it yet, I recommend installing it now. I have an entire <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-raspbian-raspberry-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"598\">guide on how to install Raspberry Pi OS on Raspberry Pi<\/a>, so I will not repeat everything here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can pick any Raspberry Pi OS version you want. The Lite version is enough, but using a Desktop version might help for debugging purposes. I&#8217;ll give you the instructions for the Lite version, if you are on Desktop, open a terminal and follow the same steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before going further you need to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-raspbian-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"587\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"599\">Install Raspberry Pi OS<\/a> <\/strong>by following the tutorial if needed.<br>I&#8217;m doing this on Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye, but it&#8217;s the same thing with any version.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connect the Raspberry Pi to your network<\/strong> (Ethernet or Wi-Fi).<br>In most cases, Ethernet will be connected automatically with your DHCP server.<br>To connect to a Wi-Fi network, you can use raspi-config:<br><code>sudo raspi-config<br><\/code>Then go to System options &gt; Wireless LAN.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"923\" height=\"209\" class=\"wp-image-10096\" style=\"width: px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/enter-ssid-raspi-config.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/enter-ssid-raspi-config.jpg 923w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/enter-ssid-raspi-config-300x68.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/enter-ssid-raspi-config-768x174.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 923px) 100vw, 923px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Update the Raspberry Pi OS packages to the latest version:<br><\/strong><code>sudo apt update<br>sudo apt upgrade<br>sudo reboot<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enable SSH: <\/strong>It&#8217;s often easier to do everything from your computer (via SSH), instead of typing everything on the Raspberry Pi. To enable it on your Raspberry Pi, you can use raspi-config:<strong><br><\/strong><code>sudo raspi-config <\/code><br>Then go to <strong>Interface Options &gt; SSH<\/strong>, and answer &#8220;Yes&#8221;.<br>You can now use SSH to follow the next part of this tutorial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s it, you are ready to start!<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configure the Pi Camera<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent versions of Raspberry Pi OS, the camera is now enabled by default, so it should work right away. You can do a quick check with:<br><code>rpicam-hello<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should start the camera preview stream and display the camera view on your screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you run an old version of Raspberry Pi OS, you may need to enable it first. You can do this via raspi-config > Interface Options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you experience any issues with the camera installation, or for any reason, it doesn&#8217;t work as expected, please check this <a data-lasso-id=\"600\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/troubleshooting-camera-module\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">troubleshooting guide for the Raspberry Pi camera module<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Camera Streamer Software<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need a software that can <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/how-to-live-stream-pi-camera\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22312\">stream the camera over the network<\/a> (IP camera). For this guide, we&#8217;ll be using Motion, a powerful software that can do that and a lot more with your camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install Motion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use it, follow this procedure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install Motion and the required dependencies<\/strong> from the default repository:<strong><br><\/strong><code>sudo apt install motion libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev libjpeg-dev libjpeg62-turbo-dev libpq-dev libswresample-dev<\/code> <br>Answer &#8220;Yes&#8221; to install all of them. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, you need to configure Motion. The configuration is not intuitive at all, but you can <strong>download a configuration template<\/strong> from here:<br><code>wget https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/6ruqgv1h65zufr6\/motion-mmal-lowflyerUK-20151114.tar.gz <\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extract the files<\/strong> from the archive: <br><code>tar -zxvf motion-mmal-lowflyerUK-20151114.tar.gz <\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel free to check and adjust the settings in the <em>motion-mmalcam-both.conf<\/em> file to fit your camera needs (image height and width, for example).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start Motion with our configuration template: <br><\/strong><code>sudo motion -c motion-mmalcam-both.conf<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will start up and then run as a listening server. <br>To finish up our installation, let&#8217;s check if the video stream is actually working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check the Video Stream<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The live stream is available in HTTP, by using <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/find-current-ip-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"96\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"601\">the Raspberry Pi IP address<\/a> and the port 8081.<br>Open your web browser and go to http:\/\/&lt;RASPBERRY_IP&gt;:8081.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check that&nbsp;you can see the live stream correctly, with sufficient quality.<br>Now that&nbsp;you can see the live steam, you can adjust the Motion configuration again (for example, mine is never in the correct sens, I have to rotate the image).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of this tutorial is not to explain to you how to configure Motion.<br>But you can find all the resources needed on their <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/motion-project.github.io\/motion_config.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"602\">GitHub page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access the Raspberry Pi Camera Stream on Your PC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now have your live stream working, and we need to use another software on the computer to relay the camera image in a video call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Software Recommendation: SplitCam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SplitCam is the software we&#8217;ll use to turn your IP camera into<\/strong> a webcam on the PC.<br>SplitCam allows, among other things, to create a virtual camera on your computer and send an IP camera to flow into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ll use this software to have the Pi camera available on Zoom (or other video conferencing software), even if we don&#8217;t&nbsp;actually have a physical camera on the PC itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Download &amp; Install SplitCam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SplitCam is a free software for Windows, you can download it from the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/splitcamera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-lasso-id=\"603\">official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To install it on your computer, follow this procedure:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Double-click on the file you just&nbsp;downloaded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the default values (&#8220;Next&#8221;, &#8220;Next&#8221;, &#8220;Next&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the end of the installation, you can close the setup wizard. <br>SplitCam should be available in your main menu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configuration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can now start SplitCam.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"315\" class=\"wp-image-10103\" style=\"width: 250px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-start.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-start.jpg 360w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-start-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first time it runs, quit the setup wizard, because we want to do something else. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the left, you&#8217;ll see a list of <strong>Media Layers<\/strong>, click the <strong>+ icon<\/strong> to add a new source.<br><span style=\"color: initial;\">From the drop-down list, select <strong>IP Camera<\/strong>.<\/span><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam_source_ipcamera.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ll get something like this:<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"785\" height=\"259\" class=\"wp-image-10104\" style=\"width: px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-add-camera.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-add-camera.jpg 785w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-add-camera-300x99.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/splitcam-add-camera-768x253.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then in the URL field, enter the live stream URL.<br>For example: <em>http:\/\/192.168.1.17:8081<br><\/em>Click <strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After a few seconds, a new entry will appear in the list and the video feed in the main window.<span id=\"selectionBoundary_1549091082962_3899649861509922\" class=\"rangySelectionBoundary\" style=\"line-height: 0; display: none;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you experience any issues, double-check the Raspberry Pi IP address and make sure that Motion is still running on the Raspberry Pi. Restarting SplitCam also fixed an issue on my side, so maybe you can try this if it doesn&#8217;t display the live stream.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re almost ready, you just&nbsp;need to configure your video call software now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zoom Configuration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll show you how to use it on Zoom, as it&#8217;s one the most used tools for this.<br>But it&#8217;s the same thing with any software:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Launch Zoom.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Click on the cog icon to open the Settings menu.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Go to the &#8220;Video &amp; effects&#8221; section.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the Camera section, make sure that the &#8220;SplitCam Video Driver&#8221; is selected:<\/strong><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/zoom_splitcam_driver.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You can check the camera image preview to see that its&#8217; working.<\/strong><br>Now you&#8217;re ready to use your Raspberry Pi camera as a classic webcam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I auto-start Motion on boot?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We use a specific configuration file and command to start motion temporarily, but you can move the files to the default folders to configure it as a daemon.<br><strong>Here is how to do this:<\/strong><br><code>sudo mkdir \/var\/log\/motion<br>sudo chown motion \/var\/log\/motion<br>sudo mv motion-mmalcam-both.conf \/etc\/motion.conf<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Then enable the service to make it start automatically on boot:<\/strong><br><code>sudo systemctl enable motion<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s it, you now know how to use your Raspberry Pi camera as a webcam on any computer software.
