This&nbsp;port seemed useful for many things, so I did some research and tests on the subject. And now I&#8217;m able to tell you more about it with this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is no microphone on the Raspberry Pi, and no input jack. It\u2019s a great resource to have by your side. <a rel='noopener' href='https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=begpost&#038;lm=1' target='_blank'><b>Get your free copy here<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is There No Microphone on a Raspberry Pi?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic concept of Raspberry Pi is to create a &#8220;computer&#8221; with these 3 criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Small size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affordable price<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possibilities for upgrades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Raspberry Pi Foundation tries to keep the price of their products as low as possible, and don&#8217;t add any non-essential components to their device. Especially, if it&#8217;s possible to add it later by using existing components.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the same reasoning regarding the microphone. Older Raspberry Pi models included a speaker jack output (<a data-lasso-id=\"260\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-speaker\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as explained here<\/a>), but not a microphone input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you&#8217;ll see that it&#8217;s not that complicated to add one, and at least it will totally fit your needs if you buy it separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Add a Microphone to the Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The easiest way to add a microphone on a Raspberry Pi is to plug a USB microphone into a USB port or to use a jack-to-USB adapter for a traditional microphone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing to do before installing a microphone is to ask yourself what you want to do with it.<br>First, choose a microphone that fits your needs, without looking into whether it will be compatible or not. Assume that everything is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you made your choice or already have a microphone that you want to install?<br>Let&#8217;s see how to install it for the three most frequent cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USB Microphone<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb-microphone-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first possibility, which is probably the simplest, is to&nbsp;<strong>connect a USB microphone<\/strong> (<a data-lasso-id=\"261\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B01KLRBHGM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check the price on Amazon<\/a>).<br>If you&#8217;re looking for a cheap solution to do some tests with, a USB microphone is perfect for you. Very affordable, no driver issues to deal with, and a discreet size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advantage of USB is that generally your microphone will be <strong>detected automatically by Raspberry Pi OS<\/strong>\u2014it&#8217;s plug &amp; play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my case, <strong>I plugged it into a free USB port, and the&nbsp;<span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5;\">sound controller peripherals immediately detected the microphone, and added it to the list<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb_microphone_raspios_gui.jpg\" alt=\"usb microphone on raspberry pi os desktop\" class=\"wp-image-39208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb_microphone_raspios_gui.jpg 313w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb_microphone_raspios_gui-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you see your microphone show up here, that&#8217;s it! You&#8217;ll have to adjust the amplification, and it&#8217;s ready to be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bluetooth&nbsp;Microphone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a Bluetooth microphone (headset or other), there are two cases that can occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your Raspberry Pi model is <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/raspberry-pi-bluetooth-setup\/\">equipped with Bluetooth<\/a>, and your microphone is detected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not so lucky :-).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bluetooth Microphone Detected Automatically<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did the test using a Bluetooth headset with mic, and I was lucky that it was<strong>&nbsp;very well-recognized by the Raspberry Pi<\/strong>, so I could easily pair it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bluetooth.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bluetooth.png 368w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bluetooth-300x228.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the sound switched automatically to the headphones, and I was able to record my voice with the headset&#8217;s microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, I couldn&#8217;t adjust the output parameters (especially volume) via the GUI. <b>I<\/b><strong> had to go through alsamixer<\/strong>:<br><code>alsamixer<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bluetooth Not Detected<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your Bluetooth microphone is not detected, the microphone manufacturer will generally provide a<b> USB adapter<\/b><span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5;\"><b>&nbsp;<\/b>with it, so you can use it<\/span>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it&#8217;s possible to install additional drivers or at least do something to help the Bluetooth recognize your microphone, but I admit I have not encountered this case, so I didn&#8217;t look into it more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you go back to the chapter &#8220;USB Microphone&#8221; and follow the same steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jack Microphone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This&nbsp;solution is the most complicated, so it&#8217;s only a good choice if you have a good reason to want to install a microphone jack at any price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, since there is no integrated connector, <strong>you will need to add an extension to your Raspberry Pi<\/strong>. This&nbsp;solution involves buying and installing a sound card which will allow, among other things, to connect a microphone jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are mainly two types of sound cards, and in both cases, it means that you will have to buy an additional component (either a USB soundcard or a HAT soundcard).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USB Sound Card<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"639\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb-soundcard.jpg\" alt=\"usb soundcard\" class=\"wp-image-122\" style=\"width:257px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb-soundcard.jpg 639w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/usb-soundcard-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think this is probably the most straightforward way to add a microphone jack if that&#8217;s what you&nbsp;want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For a cheap solution, you can find <a data-lasso-id=\"262\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B01N905VOY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this USB-to-jack adapter on Amazon<\/a><\/strong>, which allows you to connect a USB headset and microphone to your Raspberry Pi. If you have a headset or microphone using jack ports, it&#8217;s the best solution for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The configuration will be the same as the one indicated at the beginning of this post.<br>Raspberry Pi OS will detect the adapter and you will only have to configure your microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HAT Sound Card<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For DIYers or those who need high fidelity sound quality, there are real sound cards, very close to those that can be found in conventional computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For a decent price, you can install this &#8220;HAT&#8221; sound card<\/strong> via the GPIO ports of Raspberry Pi and enjoy a professional product for advanced projects (<a data-lasso-id=\"263\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07D13QWV9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all details on Amazon<\/a>).&nbsp; Once you have it, you can start an audio project without any doubts about the sound part, it will work!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hat-soundcard-1-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-174\" style=\"width:300px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hat-soundcard-1-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hat-soundcard-1-768x362.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hat-soundcard-1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optional: Advanced Microphone Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your microphone is already detected and working with Raspberry Pi OS, great! You can skip to the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you need more fine-tune control, you can install a GUI tool: <strong>PulseAudio Volume Control<\/strong>.<br>(Even though Raspberry Pi OS now uses PipeWire instead of PulseAudio for the audio backend, this tool still works.)<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"951\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_mic_raspios.jpg\" alt=\"pavucontrol on raspberry pi os desktop\" class=\"wp-image-39209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_mic_raspios.jpg 951w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_mic_raspios-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_mic_raspios-768x363.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 951px) 100vw, 951px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn&#8217;t mess with this unless you absolutely need it, because I think the interface is still confusing after all these years. But if something&#8217;s not working as expected, this might be the best fix. For example, you can use this tool to redirect the mic output to specific apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here&#8217;s how to install PulseAudio Volume Control from a terminal:<\/strong><br><code>sudo apt install pavucontrol<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that you can launch it from the <strong>main menu &gt; Sound &amp; Video<\/strong> category.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"707\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_raspios_menu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_raspios_menu.jpg 707w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pavucontrol_raspios_menu-300x132.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Test a Microphone on Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To test a microphone on Raspberry Pi OS, you can either use a command line (<em>arecord<\/em>) or install a sound editor application like Audacity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In a Terminal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to be sure that your microphone works well, the easiest way is to<strong> do a recording<\/strong> test.<br>To do this, open a terminal and type the following command:<br><code>arecord -D plughw:1,0 -d 10 test.wav<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>-d 10<\/em> tells how many seconds to record for. You can change this to <em>-d 30<\/em> for instance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>-D plughw:1,0<\/em> chooses the microphone to record with. <br>On your system, it might be a different number. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use this command to list your microphone device: <br><em>arecord -l<\/em><br>In the screenshot below, since the microphone is identified as card &#8216;3&#8217; and subdevice &#8216;0&#8217;, the parameter above would have to be changed to <em>-D plughw:3,0<\/em> to record from this mic.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"108\" class=\"wp-image-39213\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/arecord_device.jpg\" alt=\"arecord choose device list\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/arecord_device.jpg 733w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/arecord_device-300x46.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, now that it&#8217;s recorded, open the sound file with your favorite audio player to check that the microphone recorded your voice correctly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you can install the <em>sox<\/em> package:<br><code>sudo apt install sox<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then use the simple play command:<br><code>play test.wav<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t<p  id=\"inpost_lm_linux_commands\"><b>Tip: <\/b> Command lines can be a pain to memorize. I put the essential Linux commands on a printable cheat sheet so you don't have to keep googling them.\u00a0You can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/downloads\/?source=rb_linux&lm=4\" target=\"_blank\">grab the PDF here<\/a> if you want to save some time.<\/p>\r\n\t<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\t\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Desktop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graphically, there are lots of applications that you can use to test your mic&nbsp;or manage your audio recordings. <strong>The one I recommend is Audacity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just install it with:<br><code>sudo apt install audacity<\/code><br>You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/install-apps-raspberry-pi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">install it with the Add\/Remove software tool<\/a> if you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launch it from the <strong>main menu &gt; Sound &amp; Video &gt; Audacity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/audacity_setup-1024x443.jpg\" alt=\"audacity record audio raspberry pi os\" class=\"wp-image-39212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/audacity_setup-1024x443.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/audacity_setup-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/audacity_setup-768x333.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raspberrytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/audacity_setup.jpg 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure your microphone is selected under <strong>Audio Setup &gt; Recording Device<\/strong>.<br><strong>Click the red &#8220;Record&#8221; button<\/strong> to start your audio recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then check the sound by simply clicking on Play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audacity allows a lot of editing to your raw sound. For example, you can amplify it, change the frequency of sampling or add various effects.
