Hi my name is Roger Webb a wargamer of twenty nine years, I first started playing Wargames when I joined the post office and was taken along to my local club (Chester Wargames Society) by a work colleague (who ended up as my brother in-law, he’s got a lot to answer for!). I live on the Wirral with my Wife (a very understanding lady), my youngest son, seven cats, two dogs, and a goldfish.
Over the years I’ve done many things within the hobby, from putting on participation games in promotion of “The Society of Fantasy and Science Fiction Wargamers” or S.F.S.F.W, and editing the miniature review section of their journal “Ragnarok”, to starting a new club in my local area “The Wirral Games Club”, the club used to have a monthly newsletter called “The Pale Squat” (Where did we get that name from I wonder?), and I as club president used to have a section detailing what was going on, what games were in the offing, what we planned to buy for the club etc.. and this was called “Rantings from under the table”, so that is where the name comes from.
At one time I wrote the miniature review section of “Valkyrie” magazine called “Soldiers of Fortune” and it was whilst doing this that I had a conversation with my (long suffering) wife in which I said “If I had a Wargames company, I’d call it Wargames Supply Dump!”. “Why don’t you then”, came the reply. Words she lived to regret as after “Valkyrie’s”
demise, plans were made and at “Sheffield Triples” in 2004 we did just that. The business ran for thirteen years then until the 31st of March 2017.
I have always enjoyed writing and so this “Blog” is my outlet for all the stuff and nonsense I get up to that is Wargames related. I hope to post every week with what I’ve been up to and this will hopefully keep me motivated and actually painting up the stuff I’ve been buying over the years. Thanks for reading and please carry on.
Cheers Roger.
Roger, I’m really enjoying your blog. I’ve created a mix of of Wargames related cartoons over the years, (some for Slingshot magazine) and wanted to ask, can I upload some of them to your site and how would I do that? It’s a shame they’re sitting in a remote folder on my PC with no one to see them.
HI Shawn, wouldn’t know how you could upload them here, but why not start your own blog, it’s simple (must be I’ve done it), just go to WordPress and follow the instructions, it’s free. If you do, please let me know and I’ll link into your site mate.
Cheers Roger
Thanks Roger. Was also wondering about that.
Will look at the WordPress option when I get a gap and let you know.
F.Y.I. One of my Cartoons on the Wargames FB Page I run. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2124552377854769/permalink/3436029690040358/?mibextid=uJjRxr
Great cartoon’s mate (I scrolled down and saw another 😁), hope you get a blog up and running, will have to have a proper look at that FB page when I get chance.
I’ve done a few cartoon myself back in the day, I’ve had them on the blog too, here….
and here….
Cheers Roger
Thanks for the kind words Roger. The earlier one’s I used to put in our ‘Wombat’ Wargames mag in the 80’s, and also in “S.A. Wargamer” a little mag I started in the 90’s. (all redundant now) & also traded a few for free issues of “Slingshot.” (The Society of Ancients Magazine) Problem was having little artistic background (apart from self taught, figure painting) they would take forever to do and I eventually packed it up from lack of time and motivation. Anyway I’ll look into a blog for their display sometime. (I once made a non-wargaming, website but didn’t keep it up) Nice to have an affinity with another “Wargames Cartoonist.” (BTW Love your site!)
Thanks again Shawn, I too have no artistic background apart from scribbling pictures and stuff as a child (I used to make myself little card figures of heroes I wanted, and now I do something very similar but with greenstuff some things never really change, or grow up!).
Background or not you have real talent mate, you should show them off!
Cheers Roger.
Again, thanks for the kind words. I also used to draw piles of mainly, WW2 aircraft & armies as a kid, (Stimulated by daddy’s war stories and comics) and had many Airfix 1/72 Figs. (at that stage just lined them up and shot them with marbles or matchsticks. Only discovered wargames rules later)) I’ll make a plan sometime re displaying more, but regards drawing anymore, unlikely. Time and physical energy have run down and I use what little I still have to game, (PC online & Tabeletop) and the occasional figure painting. I don’t celebrate but if you do, best to you and yours over this season.
