Okay so yes I said last time that I’d be outlining my “big project” for the year this time, and yes the figures have now arrived, but I’ve been waiting for the bases that I ordered (after
the figures, long story I’ll cover once I do the post on them) to arrive, so in the meantime I thought I’d dig out a couple of figures that would be quick and easy to “knock out” while I’m pacing by the front door waiting for the postman to arrive. And to this end I found these two chaps by Mark Copplestone whom regular readers will be well aware is one of my all-time favourite sculptors.
The cigar holding super villain was a gift from my son after he bought the “Evil Genius’s pack” and then never got round to painting any of it (we’ve all been there I guess!), the other chap I think I picked up second hand from a wargames table sale a while back, hence the terrible beginnings of a paintjob! (Not by me I hasten to add). Both figures were firstly cleaned up of flash and mould lines (the second hand figure was particularly bad here, who doesn’t remove the flash and mould lines before painting!!! 😠. Then they were based up onto two pence pieces with filler and cat litter rocks added, and it was out for a coat of matt black, a touch up with more black and a dry-brush (where appropriate) of chainmail over their guns.
My “Evil Genius” (He really reminds me of this guy 👈 from the old Gerry Anderson “SuperCar” series) was started by having his jacket and trousers undercoated in khaki then I highlighted these with Eurasian flesh, then his shoes, buttons, cigar and the grip on the pistol hidden behind his back (treacherous cur!) were added in chocolate brown, and then these were highlighted with …leather brown on the grip and shoes and Eurasian flesh on the cigar (his buttons I just left in chocolate). Flesh came next and I went with “red Indian flesh” for the base on him, mixing the same with a little elfric flesh to add the highlights after his eyes were painted in. His bushy eyebrows were
then added in dark grey with dark sea grey dry-brushed over this and while I was at it I did the ash on his cigar the same way with the same colours. Lastly he has a large ring on one of his cigar holding fingers (though to be honest this could just have been flash I’d missed during the cleaning up process), so I added this in dragons gold with a shining gold highlight.
The other figure that I’m going to call “Yuri” (simply because it’s easier than saying “the other figure”), was begun by mixing some navy blue and a touch of black then using the resultant dark navy as a base that was painted over his suit, this was then highlighted
using just navy. Rather than just give him another white shirt I decided his rather flamboyant hairstyle deserved something a little brighter so a base of Polish crimson was followed by pink highlights with a sanguine scarlet with Italian red highlighted tie. His flesh was done in my old favourite of European flesh (which I notice is fast running out, I do hope I can get more of this from somewhere as my usual source of miniature paints has now closed!) followed after his eyes were added, with more of the same lightened with a bit of elfric flesh. His pistol grip was done like the chap above with chocolate brown with a leather brown highlight. I then highlighted his still black belt and shoes with some dark grey and did his belt buckle in more chainmail, that just left his flowing locks (or sad mullet, depending on your viewpoint 😂), and these were done in sand (dark) followed by more sand (light).
Both figures were given a coat of “Quickshade” soft tone and the bases were then done in my usual manner of, chocolate brown, dry-brushed with khaki, and then again with coffee. Areas were then picked out with scenic green before these same areas were flocked with some Javis “Summer Mix” hairy grass. A final spray coat of matt varnish and they were finished. So next time I really do promise to have news (and possibly even the first figures painted up 😉) on my “big” project of the year(s).
So till then, cheers Roger.
