Dwarves are the best. They just are. This was also the realisation of a DM I know, who forced his entire party to be made of dwarves. He now has an awesome long-running campaign. Frankly, it should be the default choice. OK, maybe I am getting carried away…
Anyways, this table helps generate the societal aspects of a dwarven clan or fortress encountered by the party, or background for a dwarven PC. In my mind, dwarven society are tight-knit groups that are bound by a common value and work together in machine-like fashion towards a goal, be it mining, brewing, exploring, warfare, or producing stuffed animals. It is therefore always a momentous event when something in the world assumes such an importance to deviate dwarves from their values and tasks. This can also be gleamed fom how rarely people playing dwarf fortress leave their computer.
Starting with the first column, the table generates the primary value of a dwarven clan or colony, which can be used to color the personality and help envision the choices of dwarves from this clan. The “aspect” column generates something that this clan or colony is famous for, and can be rolled on multiple times, especially for large or famous clans. The “ritual/event” generates something that may be occurring when the party first encounters the clan, or in general something for the party to engage with gameplay-wise. Finally, some dwarf NPCs are added for flavour.
Roll (at least) 1d20 per column!
