Irrigation Technician’s Course
This intensive two day course takes you through the important topics related to the repair and maintenance of efficient irrigation systems. The class will present scenarios commonly experienced by irrigation technicians and then examine the possible causes and solutions to each issue. This class is ideal for irrigation service technicians, irrigation system managers, distributor personnel or other irrigation professionals that want a better understanding of the set-up and maintenance of efficient, effective irrigation systems.
Course Outline
Common Troubleshooting Scenarios
Unit 1 Class introduction and classroom safety
Unit 2 Troubleshooting Process
Unit 3 Controller display is blank
Unit 4 Zone not operating (electrical failure)
Unit 5 Underground equipment lost or damaged
Unit 6 Zone not operating (Hydraulic failure)
Unit 7 Drip irrigation zone not operating
Unit 8 Water dribbling out of only a few heads
Unit 9 Owner wants to add (expand) a zone
Unit 10 Incorrect water pressure
Unit 11 Dry spot in a zone that is operating
Unit 12 Site is over or under watered
Unit 13 Water collecting around a few heads
Unit 14 Zone ‘stuck’ on
Unit 15 Backflow prevention
Unit 16 Owner wants to add auxiliary items (relays and sensors)
Unit 17 Winterization and Spring Start-up
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify key components of an irrigation system
2. Perform detailed electrical troubleshooting tests using industry standard tools
3. Explain the complete operational process of an irrigation valve
4. Diagnose and eliminate common irrigation valve failures
5. Enter basic programming information in an irrigation controller
6. List the basic requirements for irrigation schedule development
7. Explain the steps of the winterization and spring start-up process
