Naeff (1893-1942) is a Dutch former organizer in the tourism industry as well as travel writer and British spy. From December 1936 to May 1939 he wrote a weekly 'tourism' column for Haagsche post. In it, he shared his extensive experiences abroad and the latest tips and tricks for the contemporary tourist. Paris was a favorite destination. By discussing and analyzing his articles on the Paris World Exhibition in 1937 and a culinary tour around non-French restaurants in 1938, this article will show how Naeff experienced Paris.

Het boek is voor een breder publiek bedoeld, maar schuwt het academische niet. Het levert een prachtige bijdrage aan de studie van populaire protestliedjes in de moerstaal, waarin aandacht is voor grote namen als Boudewijn de Groot en Bots, maar ook voor feminisme, queer, rap en gabber. The disruptions that have hit global markets have also laid bare the glaring hypocrisy of our supermarket of images, also known as our iconomy. With the coronavirus spreading in the Western world, we're witnessing the shortcomings of crisis photography. Dead bodies are invisible, as are the faces of the suffering and panic-stricken. In fact, all the tropes we've come to expect from crisis photography are absent now that the West is on the receiving end. Our society works hard to limit the visibility of our own suffering while making a spectacle of that which happens abroad. Now that an unprecedented health crisis has reached Europe, we are confronted with the question of how to represent ourselves while we die in loneliness, humiliation and quarantine.

The murder of millions of Jews and other victims and enemies of the Third Reich largely took place out of sight of any camera lens. The scant footage of the Shoah that does exist has, therefore, been closely scrutinised. With his book Éclats. Prises de vue clandestines des camps nazis, filmmaker Christophe Cognet makes an important correction to the way we handle the images of the Holocaust that were taken in secret.

In June 2017 Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Fund uploaded a long video outlining the supposed corruption of the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev (fig 1 and 2). The probe of the well-known opposition figure originated in the release by hackers of the underwhelming contents of Medvedev’s mobile telephone. No incriminating material was found; instead, the phone contained a plethora of mundane images showing the politician in his daily goings-about. One of these informal photos of the PM sporting a colorful shirt, a large watch, and fancy trainers, however, caught the attention of Navalny’s team. This unremarkable image served as the starting point of research that uncovered a large and widespread network of illegal transactions, false identities, questionable real-estate holdings, and financial coverups that incriminated many high-ranking officials and businessmen. This video helped spark anti-Medvedev protests that caught Russia’s ruling classes off-guard. Never before has such an unassuming image had such a large impact: it does not pretend to be an aesthetic representation of an exceptional situation, and does not maintain a privileged relationship to truth like previous forms of documentary photography. Medvedev’s holiday snap illustrates a new paradigm in documentary photography in which aesthetics, truth, and artistry are replaced by reliability.

Maar juist deze demonstraties typeren, volgens Wilco Versteeg, de Franse volksaard. De in Parijs wonende Versteeg heeft met eigen ogen de protesten zien veranderen, schrijft hij. Een inmiddels bekend scenario ontvouwt zich in de avond van dinsdag 28 maart 2017. Een zoveelste aflevering in een seizoen vol demonstraties. Honderden demonstranten verzamelen zich voor het politiebureau voor het 19 e arrondissement, een Parijse Vogelaarwijk. De Chinese gemeenschap is woest over de moord op Shaoyo Liu, door agenten in burger onder onduidelijke omstandigheden doodgeschoten in zijn eigen woning. Het scenario begint met gekanaliseerde woede en toespraakjes, maar degenereert al snel in de aanhef van inmiddels klassieke liederen als 'flics, violeurs, assassins!' en 'tout le monde déteste la police', gevolgd door het gooien van vuurwerk en stenen naar de politie, en de onmiddellijke inzet van traangas, granaten, rubberkogels… En het bleef nog lang onrustig.

Aan de vooravond van de eerste ronde van de presidentsverkiezingen is de race een vierstrijd geworden. Maar wie het meest of het minst in de smaak valt, is wonderwel af te lezen aan de staat van het verkiezingsaffiche. " Ga terug naar uw eigen land! " , werd me tijdens een woordenwisseling toegebeten door een ambtenaar. Hoewel ik als buitenlander een Franse baan inpik, ben ik nauwelijks het toonbeeld van de vreemdeling dat de Fransen al decennia schrik aanjaagt. U moet zich schrijver dezes voorstellen als een jonge man, gemiddeld van lengte en met een nijging tot vroege kaalheid. Het haar dat er nog zit is blond en de ogen helder. Ik spreek Frans met een accent. Boven mijn door het ministerie van hoger onderwijs verstuurde loonstrookje prijkt Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. Pessimisme De komende verkiezingen zijn spannender dan ooit, maar er heerst veel pessimisme over de kandidaten en of zij de werkelijke problemen van het land aan zullen pakken. Lakhdar, een documentairemaker van Algerijnse afkomst, vindt mijn anekdote vermakelijk omdat het laat zien dat Frankrijk een probleem met andersheid heeft dat nauwelijks besproken wordt, ook deze campagne niet. Hij wordt na 20 jaar nog dagelijks gevraagd waar hij vandaan komt: " Ik ben Frans! Ik maak me zorgen om het vijanddenken in de politiek. De immigranten hebben het gedaan, maar ik heb in Algerije gezien dat een land zonder immigranten opdroogt. Frankrijk heeft juist behoefte aan vernieuwing, en aan een politicus die het nieuwe Frankrijk weet te verenigen. "

Volgens onderzoeker en import-Parijzenaar Wilco Versteeg en drie van zijn studenten zijn Marine Le Pen en Emmanuel Macron niet het medicijn voor het zieke Frankrijk. We hebben alle vier een lichte kater. Mireille, Chloé en Thibault omdat hun kandidaat een historisch lage score heeft behaald bij de verkiezingen; ik omdat ik pas om 5 uur in bed lag na een nachtje rellen fotograferen. Aan een broodnodige koffie in een café bij onze universiteit in het dertiende arrondissement bespreken we de uitkomst van de eerste ronde, waarin een populistische partij met een racistische en fascistische achtergrond iets minder stemmen heeft behaald dan een vooral buiten Frankrijk populaire liberaal. Ook kijken we vast vooruit naar het komende vijfjarige tijdperk van président Macron. Traangas Terug naar de avond van de verkiezingen. In Parijs protesteren een paar duizend jongeren tegen Le Pen, Macron en de electorale maskerade, zoals het gebrek aan alternatieven dat spreekt uit de uitslag wordt genoemd. De avond verloopt onrustig met 149 arrestaties, een tiental gewonden, enkele auto's die in vlammen opgaan en een zelfs voor Parijse begrippen een erg gewelddadig politieoptreden. Aujourd'hui, plus que jamais, il faut de l'imagination pour rendre les guerres visibles. Les guerres sont en train de devenir de plus en plus virtuelles. Il me semble que nous avons peu à peu perdu un imaginaire de guerre. Ce sont les artistes qui peuvent combler ce manque, et nous avons besoin d'eux pour nous faire réaliser que le monde a changé pendant que nous étions occupés à autre chose.
