Event and Subjectivity presents a rich phenomenological analysis of the event in contemporary phe... more Event and Subjectivity presents a rich phenomenological analysis of the event in contemporary phenomenology by focussing on the work of Claude Romano and Jean-Luc Marion. Although the event is a major topic of contemporary philosophy, its centrality has not been acknowledged enough in the phenomenological movement. The book starts with the idea that the event cannot find a proper place in Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology and Heidegger’s existential phenomenology.
It proposes a phenomenological version of the event that transforms the definition of phenomenon, subjectivity and phenomenology itself in order to do justice to the phenomenality of the event.
At the same time, Event and Subjectivity is the first book on Claude Romano’s understanding of phenomenology in English. It also offers a fresh reading of the phenomenology of Jean-Luc Marion by highlighting the phenomenon of the event.

Does the saturated phenomenon consider any possibility other than being “Christian”? How much can... more Does the saturated phenomenon consider any possibility other than being “Christian”? How much can Marion’s phenomenology be open to other religious beliefs than Christianity?
This article will seek answers for these questions in two steps. First, I will discuss why Marion’s thought seems to be distant from any tradition other than the Christian one. I will try to understand whether Marion leaves open any possibility of taking into account other religious traditions. In this part, I will focus on his phenomenological project wherein Marion regards only the Christian sense of revelation as saturated phenomenon par excellence – even if it is a phenomenological possibility – while at the same time claiming the universality of givenness. Secondly, despite Marion’s complete lack of discussion about other religious traditions, I will make an attempt to read his theological works together with Islamic thought by focusing on a towering figure in Islamic mysticism, Ibn Arabi.

Kaynayan bu kazanda, geçen yüzyıldaki gelişmeleri, akımları tanımlamak için kullanılan kavramlar da buharlaşıyor. Soykırım ve faşizm tarihçisi Enzo Traverso, tam da bu bağlamda, Avrupa’da her geçen gün kendisini daha da gösteren ve dünyanın başka yerlerinde ise farklı şekillerde beliren yeni sağ hareketleri merceğine alıyor. Avrupa içinde bile birçok farklılık gösteren mezkûr hareketlerin “faşizm” ile açıklanamayacağını iddia eden Traverso, bu hareketlerin yarattığı heterojen ve karma duruma dikkat çekerek “post-faşizm” kavramını öneriyor. Bu hareketlerin nevi şahsına münhasır unsurlarına, kendilerini geçmiş faşist ideolojilerden nasıl ayırdıklarına dikkat çeken Traverso, günümüz dünyasını etkileyen yabancı düşmanlığının yanında İslamofobi, antisemitizm gibi birçok meseleyi de tartışmanın merkezine alıyor.
Elinizdeki kitabın Fransızca yayımlandığı tarihten bugüne kadar geçen sürede aşırı sağ hareketlerin Avrupa siyasetinin kalbine yerleşmesi ve adından daha fazla söz ettirmesi, Enzo Traverso’nun analiz ve tespitlerinde ne kadar keskin ve hassas olduğunu gözler önüne serdi. Merleau-Ponty ve Paul Ricoeur’ün öğrencisi oldu. Daha sonra Münih Ludwig Maximillian Üniversitesinde dersler verdi. 1976 yılında profesör olarak atandığı Ruhr Üniversitesi Bochum’da 1999’da emekli oldu ve 2016 yılına kadar orada ders vermeyi sürdürdü.

Kanada Montreal Üniversitesi’nde felsefe profesörü olarak hocalığını sürdürmektedir. Doktora eğitimini 1982 yılında Tübingen’de tamamlayan Grondin, Hans-Georg Gadamer’in öğrencisi ve takipçisi olmuştur. Çoğunluğu hermenötikle ilgili olmak üzere ondan fazla kitap, yüzden fazla makale kaleme almıştır. Kitapları birçok dile çevrilmiştir. Sabah Ülkesi’nin 52. sayısında “Dilin Dolayımı ve Gerçekliğe Açıklığı” adlı makalesi yayınlanmıştır.

Review of Özkan Gözel's Ne-Varlık ve Hiçlik: Trans-ontolojik Bir Düşünüm (in Turkish)
In the first part, I discuss the place of the event and its different phenomenological status than objects and facts, respectively, in Marion and Romano in separate chapters. The two chapters comprising the first part of the dissertation portray the phenomenality of the event and its unique mode of appearing. The transformation of the phenomenality brings forth reformulations of subjectivity. Insofar as earlier conceptions of subjectivity were determined in terms of objects and facts, the event, which is irreducible to either object or fact, requires a new understanding of the “subject”. For Marion and Romano, the phenomenality of the event is also seen as the source of subjectivation. In this regard, in the second part of the dissertation, I investigate the question of “Who experiences the event?” Both philosophers offer a new notion to understand the human in phenomenological tradition instead of the subject. In this respect, Marion’s adonné and Romano’s advenant aim to abandon the transcendental perspective in phenomenology. In the second part of the dissertation, I focus on the adonné and the advenant in separate chapters.
The renovation of phenomenality and subjectivity in the light of the event brings about a transformation in phenomenology as such. This invites us to rethink some fundamental tenets of phenomenology. In light of this transformation, I conclude this study by showing how their accounts of the event and subjectivity also promise a revised and renewed way of understanding reality and rationality.
[Gegebenheit] of Jean-Luc Marion. His main purpose in evoking this
concept is to overcome metaphysics which could be only possible by
phenomenology. Although phenomenology wished to bring the limits done
by states of metaphysical enterprise to an end by Husserl and then
Heidegger, Marion argues that it never succeeded in both attempts. In order
to accomplish the overcoming of metaphysics in phenomenology, Marion
tries to go beyond Husserl and Heidegger. By doing so, Marion’s attempt to
go beyond Husserlian and Heideggerian metaphysics in phenomenology
from the perspective of horizon and subjectivity will be clarified. His
project of overcoming metaphysics comes to get new approaches in
phenomenology in the context of saturated phenomenon. By the explanation
of saturated phenomenon, Marion comes to the understanding of a new kind
of self which is called “l’adonné” [the gifted] as a result of this nonmetaphysical
phenomenology. This study focus on the new phenomenology
of Jean-Luc Marion by examining his renovation of the concept of
givenness and reduction in phenomenology and also by considering his
relation to Husserl and Heidegger on the way to overcoming metaphysics.
