This universal identity comes from a maturation inaugurated by primitive Christianity. World Christianity is an emerging theological perspective to facilitate the comprehension of the various incarnations of Christianity in local communities. This new perspective presupposes, a) the need to overcome a Eurocentric discourse as a prevailing norm for other Christianities and, b) the need to overcome the North-South dichotomy that often attaches Christianity from the socalled Global South, to an exotic version of European Christianity, which, today, is not appropriate for studying the transnational Christianities from multicultural societies. World Christianity proposes that cultural, theological and even epistemological asymmetries need to be surpassed and in this way understand its universal identity in plural terms. Where does interest in World Christianity come from? What is its scope for a current understanding of Christianity? In particular, how can Western Christianity learn from non-Western Christianity? I reply to these inquiries with an introduction to the historical background of World Christianity and its premises. I begin with a brief study regarding the aperture of a Christianity with Jewish origins and other cultures, that later was restricted by an identification of Christianity with the Western and GrecoRoman cultures. I will then describe the recovery of the plural identity of Christianity by means of the theologies and the Christian communities of the Global South. Finally, I will explain the meaning of "World Christianity" and its implications, in order to rise above the restrictions presented by Western Christianity. From here I will answer the central questions of this volume with regard to a theological interpretation of the decline of established Christianity in the Western world. Particularly, I will conclude that the discourses of "World Christianity" and "The Next Christendom" offer new insights to understand the actual crisis as a process of transition to an age of inter-Christian reciprocity. The latter imply deep challenges in the process of theologizing and in the relation with other Christianities.

I also wish to acknowledge grant support from the Louisville institute, which made it possible for me to carry out my research without major financial concerns. I am indebted to Neomi DeAnda, Orlando Espín, Lee Cormie, and Reinerio Arce-Valentín for their willingness to read a version of this monograph and for giving me their incredibly rich feedback. I am sure this volume is much better because of their keen eyes. I am particularly grateful to Becca Whitla for her editorial work and dedication, always challenging me to be clear with my ideas. And finally, my deep thanks to my spouse Samia Saad; your work and struggle for justice inspires me. Thank you for your support and accompaniment as I worked through the issues I discuss in this volume.

Drawing on theories of intercultural philosophy and decolonial thinking, the author focuses on transformations of identity and faith among Catholic Latin American migrants in Europe and the United Sates of America. He argues that when these migrants encounter exclusion and uprooting, processes of transformation converge in parish communities. There they create mutual learning processes leading to new intercultural practices such as the deaconry of culture and relationship.

This word is related to the Spanish santo or saint and suggests a cult of saints in a way that to the opinion of common Catholics is exaggerated and blown up. In the whole territory of Spanish speaking Latin America santeria is widely spread. Many regions have developed their own style, but the Afro-Cuban practice is commonly taken for the leading tradition. After the revolution led by Fidel Castro (1958), santeria was spread by many Cubans in exile, especially to the United States where it gained great popularity. Santeria was bom as part of the forced socio-cultural reorientation of African slaves in Cuba. Lack of familiarity with the religious content of santeria, widely spread misunderstanding of its rituals, and Catholic exclusive doctrines ('outside the church no salvation') have directed towards a denunciation of Afro-Cuban religions as idolatry, superstition and syncretism. This article wants to give an introduction to Afro-Cuban religions and a proposal to search for a dialogue between these religions and Christianity on the basis of equality. We will give special attention to the views of Orlando Espin, the great initiator for a dialogue with the Afroc-Cuban religions.

From an interdisciplinary approach this article facilitates the assessment of mechanisms that generate these situations. It also focuses on the ethical and theological criteria of the Catholic social teaching to achieve a culture of encounter and acceptance of migrants and refugees.
