The dissertation assesses the digital and satirical politics of Loyalists Against Democracy (LAD), a Northern Ireland (NI) anonymous online profile with a coordinated presence and thousands of followers on social media. LAD has become known for making fun of loyalist/unionist protests and of everyday aspects of NI divisions. The profile has also criticised mainstream politicians, combated racism and supported equality policies. Two research questions guide this work: 1- What are the characteristics of LAD’s political organisation, intervention and satire?; and 2- What is novel about LAD and social media in relation to the NI conflictive context? The fieldwork on LAD was based on online research, offline observation and interviews. The profile is assessed as a peculiar form of political life, and its analysis builds on and integrates anthropological studies that deal with satire and social media. In dealing with a distinct political agent, its interactions and approach to the conflict, this study also contributes to the contemporary anthropology of NI.
