Meeting Friends on the Summit: A Special SOTA Activation at North Berwick Law

Tuesday, June 30th, 2026, was a very special day during our trip to the UK.

Before leaving for the UK, I’d been in touch with several people I hoped to meet during our travels. Since we were staying in the southeasternmost reaches of Scotland and the northeastern part of England, I wasn’t exactly centrally located for meeting up with everyone I knew in the amateur radio community.

Fortunately, a few of those hoped-for meetups actually happened. And one in particular became one of the highlights of my entire six-week trip.

I’d been looking forward to meeting Fraser (MM0EFI) in person for quite some time.

Fraser runs the Radio Rover YouTube channel, where he shares no-frills, honest, and straightforward videos about his radio adventures, including plenty of Summits on the Air activations in conditions that would make me reconsider my life choices.

I’ve watched countless episodes of Fraser heading out into the Scottish hills and battling wind, rain, snow, mud, and whatever else the weather decides to throw at him. Here in North Carolina, I can usually look at the forecast and say, “Nope, no SOTA today.” Fraser, apparently, has other ideas.

I’d been in touch with Fraser, but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to make it all the way over to the Aberdeen area during our trip. It was roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive from where we were staying, and family travel schedules don’t always leave a lot of room for spontaneous SOTA adventures.

Then my buddy Alex (GM5ALX) came up with a much better idea.

A Summit Meetup

Alex was actually the person who first encouraged me to consider changing my UK callsign from M0CYI to M5SWL. I wrote about that decision in this post.

Alex, I appreciate the suggestion. I think it was a very good call! (Pun intended!)

Alex took it upon himself to organize a meetup with Fraser, Neil (G7UFO), and me. He found a SOTA summit that was reasonably central to the three of them while also being only about 50 minutes to an hour from where I was staying.

That summit was North Berwick Law (GM/SS-280).

It was also a POTA site: North Berwick Law Site of Significant Scientific Interest (GB-1360).

It was ideal.

Even better, Neil’s route took him right past our cottage, so he offered me a lift. I couldn’t have asked for a more convenient arrangement. (Thank you, Neil!)

I was incredibly grateful that these guys had gone to the trouble of organizing everything. Given the demands of our family travels, I honestly wasn’t sure I’d be able to make it to Aberdeen to meet Fraser and Alex or down toward Durham to meet Neil. Having everyone converge on one summit made it possible.

And what a day it turned out to be!

North Berwick Law (GM/SS-280)

North Berwick Law is one of those Scottish landmarks that is impossible to miss. Rising 187 meters (614 feet) above the surrounding landscape just outside the coastal town of North Berwick, its conical shape dominates the area and can be seen from a considerable distance.

I did a bit of research and, geologically, the Law is the remnant of an ancient Carboniferous volcanic plug. Over millions of years, erosion stripped away the softer material surrounding it, leaving the harder volcanic rock standing prominently above the landscape. Later, glaciers sculpted the hill into a classic crag-and-tail landform, with the prominent rocky crag followed by a long, lower ridge extending to the east.

The Law is interesting from a human-history perspective, too. Evidence of prehistoric occupation includes an Iron Age hillfort and other archaeological remains. For centuries, its prominent position also made it an important landmark for navigation from both land and sea.

At the summit you’ll find the famous whale jawbone arch—a modern replacement for whale jawbones that have marked the summit for centuries—as well as remnants of historic lookout structures.

The hill is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, recognized for its geological and botanical significance.

And on this particular day, the weather couldn’t have been better.

The skies were beautiful, with somewhat overcast, patchy clouds; the temperature was comfortable; the ground was bone dry; and there was only a light breeze.

In other words, this was not going to be one worthy of Fraser’s Radio Rover videos: no horizontal rain, no snow, no gale-force winds, nothing to wrestle with other than tourists.

Neil and I arrived at the parking area, and we immediately knew Fraser and Alex had beaten us there because we spotted one of Fraser’s Land Rovers.

We met up in the parking area, chatted for a while, and then started the short climb toward the summit.

Neil paused to take in the breathtaking view—and perhaps contemplate the meaning of life, SOTA, and where to put his mast.

North Berwick Law isn’t a particularly difficult summit, although the trail gets semi-steep in places. Our hike took only about 15 minutes or so, and before long we were standing on the true summit.

The views during the ascent were truly stunning.

Fraser, Alex, and I reached the summit first, while Neil chose a slightly different spot to set up.

One of the first things we encountered was the summit trig point, which had a particularly nice message on it.

Once we reached the summit, Alex immediately pulled out his handy talkie and telescoping whip and got on VHF.

We proceeded to work a bit of a daisy chain, putting several stations in the log. Most of them, as I recall, were in/around the Edinburgh area, although we also managed to work my friend Alan (MM0VPM) summit-to-summit on 2m, first. (FYI: Alan and I did a joint SOTA activation the following week.)

Alex did a brilliant job helping me note each VHF contact’s call before I worked them.

I was having so much fun talking with everyone that I completely forgot to pull out my action camera.

I eventually remembered.

I managed to capture the very last VHF contact I made (thanks for being the cameraman, Fraser) and then kept the camera rolling for the rest of the activation.

It was a fun little VHF daisy chain, and it also gave us more than enough contacts to qualify the SOTA summit.

By this point, again, the SOTA summit had already been qualified.

It was time for me to get the KH1 on the air, hit the HF bands, and complete the POTA part of the activation!

Amateur Radio Has Never Been More Affordable — So Why Do Some Things Seem So Expensive?

When I meet a newly minted amateur radio operator, I often start by telling them, “You couldn’t be entering our community at a better time!

And I really mean that.

We have incredible support communities, both in person and online. Amateur radio has become far more accessible than it once was. And the cost of getting on the air has dropped dramatically.

That last part is easy to overlook if you’re new to this. Those of us who’ve been around for a few decades have a little more perspective.

I became an amateur radio operator in 1997. Some of you reading this have been hams for twice as long—or more—and you know exactly what I mean.

The gear available today is, in many respects, astonishingly affordable.

The Incredible Value of Modern Amateur Radio

Especially in the QRP world, we are living in something of a golden age.

Today, it’s entirely possible to put together a very capable field station—radio, battery, antenna, and accessories—for well under $300. Build your own antenna, and you can make that figure smaller still.

Batteries alone are a good example of how much things have changed. They’re smaller, lighter, more energy-dense, less expensive, and incredibly ubiquitous. When I started, batteries were heavier, more expensive for what you got, and considerably less convenient.

Then there’s the sheer number of inexpensive QRP transceivers available. QRP Labs is the perfect example: the QMX five-band, 5-watt multimode kit is just over $100, and it gives you CW, SSB, and digital modes in a remarkably compact package.

That is an incredible amount of radio for the money.

And when you look at everything else coming out of the QRP community—the various QRP Labs designs, MountainTopper radios, the CFT-1, the microSDX radios, and so many others—the choices are almost overwhelming.

And it isn’t just QRP.

If you want to operate QRO (20–100 watts), you can build a capable portable station around something like the Xiegu G90 or a used Yaesu FT-891 for a fraction of what a comparable station would have cost decades ago.

Some of these rigs aren’t going to have the refinement or audio quality of a contest-grade transceiver, of course. But they don’t have to. They work brilliantly. They get you on the air.

And that’s the important part.

What $700 Meant to Me in 1997

I think about this a lot, because I remember very clearly what it was like to get my first amateur radio equipment.

In 1997, I had just finished my undergraduate degree. There was a period of about a year when I was working odd jobs, trying to make money before landing my first “real” job. My wife and I were essentially living on a student’s salary.

I saved up for a used Icom IC-735. I believe I paid nearly $700 for it from an amateur radio shop in New Jersey.

That was $700 for a used radio.

Using the U.S. Consumer Price Index, $700 in 1997 is equivalent to roughly $1,450 today.

And that was just the radio. My antenna, a manual MFJ antenna tuner ($200), and an Astron linear power supply ($190) were all additional expenses. The antenna was the exception, because I built it myself—though I still had to buy the wire, window line, and components ($80), since I hadn’t yet accumulated any supplies of my own.

Compare that with today, when a few hundred dollars will put a tremendously capable QRP or QRO field station in your pack.

But Then I Hear: “That’s a Rip-Off!”

Here’s where this gets interesting.

Because I run QRPer.com and a YouTube channel devoted largely to portable amateur radio, I see an enormous number of comments about the cost of equipment.

And I completely understand where those comments come from, especially when folks feel pricing is too high.

There have been periods in my own life when I could afford virtually anything I wanted, and periods when I couldn’t afford much of anything. I know what it’s like to look at a piece of equipment and think, “That’s simply not in my budget.”

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I can’t afford everything I’d like, either.

But there’s a real difference between something being too expensive for me and something being priced too high (ie., a “rip-off”). Those are not the same thing, and I think we sometimes run them together—especially when we’re talking about products made by small, independent manufacturers.

The Real Cost of Production

Over the past month alone, I’ve seen several comments about products from small businesses and cottage-industry manufacturers—antennas, 3D-printed accessories, portable-radio components, and other specialized bits of gear—where someone declares that $40, $60, $100, $300 or more is “too expensive” and a “rip-off.”

Sticker shock is real. But it’s worth asking what that price is actually covering.

When you buy a product from a small manufacturer, you’re not simply paying for the plastic, wire, connectors, and screws that went into it. You’re paying for the equipment they bought in order to make it, and for the maintenance of that equipment. You’re paying for electricity, packaging, shipping supplies, transaction fees, and all the other overhead that comes with running even a tiny business.

And you’re paying for someone’s time.

Someone had to design the product, order the materials, manufacture it, test it, package it, answer your email, process your payment, print your shipping label, and get it into the mail. All this, while possibly holding down a separate full-time job.

The raw materials are the smallest part of that equation.

If they’re spending an evening making antennas or 3D-printing accessories, that’s an evening they’re not spending doing something else. That opportunity cost is part of the price, and I think it should be.

So when I buy from a small manufacturer, I generally expect to pay a little more. And I’m happy to do it. I see some of that extra cost as paying it forward.

We’re Living Through a Cottage-Industry Renaissance

One of the things I find most fascinating about modern amateur radio is the sheer proliferation of small manufacturers.

Think about it! An individual, a couple, or a small team can come up with an idea, prototype it, manufacture a small run, put it on a website, and sell it to an international audience.

That would have been incredibly difficult and costly when I first became a ham.

Imagine trying to launch a little amateur radio business in 1997. You might have needed to buy a pricey advertisement in QST or CQ. You’d wait for the magazine to be published. Customers might mail you a letter with a check, or call you on the telephone. You’d process the order, package the product, and ship it—and the customer might wait weeks for the turnaround.

Today, someone can have an idea on Monday, put it online Tuesday, take orders Wednesday, ship Thursday, and have it in a customer’s hands within days.

That’s extraordinary when you stop and think about it.

The internet has effectively created an international marketplace for people who make highly specialized amateur radio products in very small quantities.

I love that. And I want those people to succeed!

What About Larger Manufacturers?

The same principle applies further up the scale, although the economics are obviously different.

My first Elecraft radio was the KX1

Take Elecraft. I’ve been using their equipment for 25 years, and I have a particular appreciation for what the company does. The products are designed and manufactured in California—but, as with virtually every modern electronics manufacturer, many of the components are internationally sourced.

That’s simply the reality of modern electronics. Domestic suppliers don’t exist for a lot of the specialized parts that go into a contemporary radio, so those parts arrive through an international supply chain, carrying shipping, import costs, tariffs, and regulatory requirements along with them.

Then there’s everything involved in employing people in a high-cost country: living wages, facilities, equipment, testing, customer service, and warranty support. All of that is real money.

So when I look at the price of an Elecraft radio or antenna, I’m not only looking only at the price tag. I’m looking at what’s behind it—years of accumulated expertise, engineering and manufacturing, and a company that still designs and builds equipment in the United States. And, oh yeah, you can call them on the phone, a person answers it, and within a couple of minutes an expert is helping you one-on-one in real time.

And yes, I’m paying for the higher cost of doing that. When I’m in a position to, I consider that a privilege.

Perspective Changes Everything

The Elecraft KH1 is a good example.

Today, the fully equipped KH1 Edgewood Package is about $1,450.65. That’s obviously a lot of money.

But here’s the perspective that blows my mind: adjusted using the CPI, $1,450 today is roughly equivalent to $700 in 1997.

In other words, a radio I would have considered wildly futuristic as a newly minted ham costs, in inflation-adjusted terms, roughly what I paid for a used IC-735.

$700 1997 dollars for a five-band, fully self-contained, high-performance, 5-watt transceiver with built-in telescoping antenna, automatic antenna tuner, and rechargeable battery, so you can work DX while hiking? That’s almost absurd.

And then consider, on the other end of the pricing spectrum: the QRP Labs QMX. At about $102, that’s roughly $50 in 1997 dollars. What!?

This is where our hobby has been unusually lucky. Food, energy, labor, services—most of what we buy costs more than it used to. But amateur radio technology has followed a very different trajectory, riding economies of scale, improved manufacturing, miniaturization, digital processing, and a truly global electronics industry.

I’m not suggesting every radio today is cheaper in absolute terms than it was thirty years ago. I’m saying the amount of capability we get for our money has changed dramatically.

That’s an important distinction. And in QRP especially, we have an embarrassment of riches.

We’ve Never Had It This Good

My point isn’t that we should all spend more on our radios. It’s that we’ve never had more options.

If you want the very best, it exists: extraordinary receiver performance, sophisticated DSP, integrated batteries and ATUs, color displays, GPS, Bluetooth, remote operation—capabilities that would have read as science fiction when I was licensed. And much of it costs less, in inflation-adjusted terms, than the far less capable gear I saved for in 1997.

If you’d rather spend a few hundred dollars, that station exists too. Buy used. Build an antenna. Put together a kit.

Whichever end of that range you’re shopping from, I meant what I said at the start: you couldn’t be entering this hobby at a better time!

And there’s never been a better time to be the person building radios in a garage, a workshop, or a small factory.

That’s worth remembering the next time we look at a price tag and think, “Wow, that’s expensive!

Sometimes it is.

But sometimes, perhaps, it’s simply the price of making something amazing.

Hunting Fossils and POTA Contacts on Cocklawburn Beach in Beautiful Northumberland

On Monday, June 29, 2026, my family and I decided to spend the afternoon out on the coast. One of our favorite things to do whenever we’re near the sea is hunt for fossils.

Back home on North Carolina’s coast, one of my daughters especially loves searching for seashells. But here along the Berwickshire and Northumberland coastline, England and Scotland offer something completely different: an incredible abundance of fossils waiting to be discovered.

Many thanks to Alex (MM0WMA), who provided us with so much guidance. During our trip, he pointed us toward several excellent fossil-hunting locations and even helped identify some of the specimens we found along the way.

Locals had also told us that Cocklawburn Beach was absolutely chock full of fossils, so naturally we had to see it for ourselves!

As a bonus, the beach lies within Berwickshire & North Northumberland Shore Coast – Northumberland SAC Conservation Reserve (GB-0257), making it the perfect opportunity for another POTA activation!

Our cottage was only about a 15-minute drive away, so after a late lunch, we hopped in the car and headed for the coast.

Parking was easy, with several pull-offs along the shoreline. Although it was a cloudy afternoon, the weather was absolutely ideal for being outdoors. Best of all, this was the first time I’d visited the coast without battling strong gusty winds. That alone made the outing especially enjoyable, at least in terms of radio setup!

We spent a little time together searching for fossils before my wife and daughters kindly gave me permission to disappear for a while and play radio.

Setting Up

I wandered down the beach until I found a spot tucked up against the dunes. It provided a little shelter from any winds from the west and kept me well away from dog walkers and other beachgoers.

For this activation, I decided to use essentially the same antenna setup that had worked so well at Barns Ness a few days prior.

I deployed my POTA20 20-foot carbon fiber mast using Mike (KE8PTX)’s excellent 3D-printed ground spike and paired it with my PackTenna 9:1 random wire antenna.

This combination has become a solid portable coastal setup. After struggling with poor propagation and heavy QRM during my previous activation, I wanted as much wire in the air as I could conveniently manage with the 20-foot mast.

The mast pushed easily into the soft sand along the dunes, and I sloped the random wire down toward my operating position. A 25-foot length of RG-174 coax allowed me to snake the feedline around to a comfortable spot.

Once again, I found myself appreciating the foresight of bringing my Helinox Chair Zero along with its ground sheet to the UK [pats self on the back!].

The Helinox Zero Chair – bought mine for $60 or $70 at an REI garage sale. The previous owner complained that it was “too light.”

The chair makes operating in the field so much more comfortable, and the ground sheet has proven invaluable on soft sand, preventing the chair legs from slowly disappearing into the beach.

Another piece of gear that has become a real favorite during this trip is my Savotta Niukka 20L pack. It has been the perfect companion for these coastal activations—comfortable to carry, deceptively spacious, and wonderfully organized. I love this thing.

Side note: fans of Savotta in the US will be happy to hear that Savotta launched their US store just yesterday! I’m doing my best not to spend any more money on their packs, but it’s a proper self-control struggle.

The Niukka keeps everything exactly where I want it, and it’s quickly become one of those pieces of gear that I can’t imagine leaving behind.

For the station itself, I unpacked my N0RNM folding kneeboard, set my Elecraft KX2 on top, connected the antenna, and paired it with my BamaTech TP-III paddles.

Finally, I pulled out my Rite in the Rain notebook and trusty click pen, prepared Ham2K PoLo on my phone, and settled in for the activation.

KK6IK: Summer Mornings, Iced Coffee & QRP

Recently I’ve heard people asking what they can do with an Elecraft KH1 when traveling. Is it too small? Does the 45-inch whip really work? Maybe the KX2 is a better radio to bring? I asked the same questions as I prepared for my annual summer visit to Rhode Island. I had decided to carry just my KX2 as it seemed the perfect travel radio, but at the last minute, I threw my KH1 into my backpack too. It turned out to be a great decision! Here’s my experience operating the KH1.

As with most summers, my spouse Marybeth and I made our annual pilgrimage to Rhode Island. We rented an Airbnb in a beautiful old 1800’s New England house in Bristol, Rhode Island. From here we traveled to our family and friends for summer gatherings in and around the Bristol/Newport area.

A Bit of History

Bristol, Rhode Island has a rich history stretching back to the Pokanoket people and their leader Metacom, also known as King Philip. English settlers founded the town in 1680, naming it after Bristol, England. Its deep harbor helped the community grow into a center for trade, fishing, manufacturing, and shipbuilding.

In the late 1800s, the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company made Bristol famous for its innovative yachts, fast steam vessels and later the America’s Cup-winning designs. Today, the Herreshoff Marine Museum preserves that legacy with historic boats, exhibits and original buildings from the company’s waterfront complex.

Being near Newport and its mansions, Bristol also has a few beautiful old homes too. One of them is the Blithewold Mansion, a historic 33-acre waterfront estate overlooking Narragansett Bay. Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle purchased the property in 1894 as a summer retreat and named it Blithewold, meaning “happy woodland.” The present English country-style mansion was completed in 1908 after the original home was destroyed by fire. Today, visitors can tour the beautifully preserved mansion, stroll through its gardens, and explore an impressive collection of trees and plants.

Bristol is also known for its patriotic spirit and spectacular Fourth of July parade. The celebration began in 1785 and is recognized as the oldest continuous Independence Day parade in America. Each summer, Bristol hosts two weeks of concerts, carnivals, fireworks, and the famous parade to the delight of visitors from around the world.

As we settled into a vacation routine, I left the house early each morning to search out the best iced coffee and a place to operate. My favorite was The Beehive, a wonderful local coffee and breakfast place where I quickly established my regular order of a large iced coffee and slice of fresh banana bread. In fact, at times when the line for service was out the door, my favorite staff members would come out, see me in line, and bring my order out! What service!

Once properly equipped with coffee, the question was-now what? What goes better with iced coffee than hunting POTA activators? I walked to the beautiful harbor, found a comfortable bench to watch the yachts go by, and found a perfect use for a KH1.

As I usually operate in and around my home in the California Bay Area, operating in New England is a treat. There are SO MANY POTA stations on the air every morning. It felt like the proverbial “shooting fish in a barrel” vs. my normal West Coast experience. For the most part, if I could hear a POTA station, I could work them; sometimes (not often) I could even break a pileup! Amazing.

I was sometimes forced to experiment with other locations on the Bristol waterfront when an unsuspecting interloper took “my” bench. What I found, through unscientific means, is the bench I chose most often (almost directly on the harbor) was a far more effective radiating location.

Yes, I did bring my KX2 and used it for several RI activations, but I ended up getting far more use from the KH1 each morning than from the KX2. I operated CW exclusively, as that is all the KH1 does, mostly on 20 meters, but I did make a few contacts on 18 and 15 meters too. My station consisted of a KH1 originally purchased as an Edgewood package – but later changed. I found that the Elecraft-provided cover simply did not work for a left-handed writer who keys using the right hand. Thanks to Joshua N5FY, I use a prototype custom snap-on KH1 cover and log on my iPhone using Ham2k Polo rather than attempting to grow a third hand.

One interesting note regarding paddles: I have several alternative paddles for the KH1, but during this trip I gained a new respect for the Elecraft KHPD1 paddle’s soft feel as I did my hand-held operating. The Elecraft paddle is well matched to the primary purpose of the radio design with a finely designed “give” for hand-held operation.

So how did I do? In early July, I was content making 7-8 hunter QSO’s before walking back to the house. By mid-month, I was able to make between 15 – 20 QSO’s in about 30-40 minutes; generally if I could hear them, I could work them. Using Ham2k Portable Logger’s (PoLo) spotter, I could work new activators as they initially got spotted, avoiding any potential pileups.

The East Coast provided the opportunity to hear some European stations – never Thomas, K4SWL sadly – but I was not able to work them. I ended the month with one final operation on July 27 before heading back to California. In total, I worked 180+ stations with the KH1 in the course of the month and had a blast doing it!

Final thoughts

Combining radio and an East Coast vacation was a great way to spend time.

I’m really glad that I tossed the KH1 into my luggage at the last minute. Next time, KH1 will be included, no matter what other radios or antennas I bring.

A Wet POTA Experiment: Hunting, Calling CQ, and Changing Modes

I have always wondered about how long I should stick with a given band/mode when activating a park. Should I keep calling CQ when things dry up, shift frequencies, or shift modes? What is the most efficient way to make contacts?

One of my grandkids suggested I ask ChatGPT! That was a new one for me, asking a computer what I should do. The crazy thing is that the computer gave me an answer that sounded reasonable.

ChatGPT suggested I start with 40 meters CW; when that goes slow, shift to 40 meters SSB. This gets the local hunters on both CW and SSB. Once the 40 meters SSB dries up, shift to 20 meters CW and repeat. I had a plan for my next activation!

My work had me 10 minutes from Black Farm Management Area (US-6989), and I was ready to test my theory. I packed the Xiegu G-90, Chelegance MC-750, CW Morse Key, Bienno 12 Ahr battery, and an ABR coax. I quickly set up POLO and headed for the park.

And then the rains came! The forecast had sporadic heavy rain for most of the day! Also, the parking lot had nothing to shelter under!

Because of the rain, I decided it would be easier to deploy the MC-750 and set it for 20 meters. Also, to stay out of the rain, I opted to start the activation on 20 meters. For some reason, I also began with SSB.

Of course, just as I got set up and ready to spot myself, the rain came! I was under the hatch of my Subaru Outback, and it was raining too hard to try and get set up in the car! I was stuck outside, huddled under the hatch. Additionally, there was no Internet, so I could not spot myself!

Thankfully, there was no thunder or lightning, so rather than call CQ and hope, I started hunting loud signals. This hunting went on for about 45 minutes, and every time it looked like the rain had stopped and I could move, it would start pouring again!

I had made 9 contacts at this point and decided it was time to shift to CW.

I started hunting on CW, and just at that point, the rains stopped, and I got internet! I did not want to change the setup, so I just plowed ahead, spotted myself, and started to call CQ. In about 30 minutes I had 8 more contacts, a successful activation, and some wet gear!

I made sure to wipe everything down as I put it away and will have to check the antenna when I get home for any corrosion or rust.

Unfortunately, I did not get to fully test my theory of calling CQ on 40 first and then 20, but the switch I did seemed to work well.

As a side note, I did have the SOTAmat and KH1 inside the car when there was no internet, and the rain was pouring down! I really wish I had spent more time trying to learn how the SOTAmat works, as that might have helped spotting me! Lessons learned this activation were that shifting modes seems to work better than slogging along, but I need to fully test this theory. Also, setting up SOTAmat before I head to the park just in case there is no internet!

Travelogue: Walking the England-Scotland Border for a QRP POTA Activation

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, I woke up knowing we had a full day planned. My family wanted to go into Berwick-upon-Tweed to check out some activities happening in town. Afterwards, we were thinking about driving up to Siccar Point, where I had activated only a week or so earlier, so we could show my daughters this remarkable place—especially one of my daughters, who is studying geology at uni.

But first, I had a little research to do.

I brewed my first cup of coffee, sat down with Google Maps, and started investigating a site I had wanted to activate for some time.

Our cottage in Foulden, Scotland, is remarkably close to the border between Scotland and England. Drive south on the A1 from Scotland and you cross into England near Marshall Meadows. The East Coast Main (Railway) Line also crosses the English-Scottish border at Marshall Meadows, and the railway continues north toward Edinburgh.

I had actually researched this area back home in the United States. Looking at maps, I had noticed a POTA site right along the coast at the northeasternmost point of England and southeasternmost part of Scotland.

I really wanted to activate it.

There was just one problem: figuring out how to get there.

On our first day in Scotland, we had driven out to the A1 and looked at the large concrete marker delineating the Scottish and English border.

I quickly discovered that the public footpath shown on maps was so badly overgrown that it was essentially unusable. Worse, I couldn’t see any obvious way to cross the railway tracks between the A1 and the coastal trail system.

So that morning my mission was to find somewhere I could legally park, get onto the trail, and walk down to the coast.

Using satellite imagery on Google Maps, I found what appeared to be a parking area perhaps a 15-minute walk from the border.

There were other possibilities, but most appeared to involve private property, and I didn’t want to take that chance. This spot looked promising, although I couldn’t confirm that it was actually available for public parking.

There was only one way to find out!

I grabbed my Savotta field radio backpack and set off in the car, knowing that I had to fit the entire adventure into roughly an hour and a half. I needed to get back in time for our trip into Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Have Faith in the Road

I drove the B roads toward the parking area, and I’ll admit that I almost turned around at one point.

If you’ve spent any time driving the narrow single-track roads in this part of the UK, you’ll know what I mean. You can be driving along and suddenly see what looks like the end of the road: a gate leading into a pasture with no road behind it. With hedgerows on both sides of the road, it looks like the end of the road.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

I almost turned around because it looked like the road simply ended at the gate and farmland. But as I got closer, I discovered that the road made a very sharp turn immediately before it. From a distance, you simply can’t see it.

So, if you ever decide to drive out to this particular spot, have faith. The road does continue! Just keep going, and you’ll see the turn.

Eventually, I came out at a really nice gravel parking area. It was obviously used by hikers, paragliders, and others enjoying the area, and there was also an access point for railway workers servicing the East Coast Main Line.

I was the only car in the parking area when I arrived.

Perfect.

I grabbed my backpack and opened Gaia GPS on the iPhone. I wanted to be absolutely certain that when I reached my operating position, I—and all of my equipment—were actually on the English side of the border.

That was particularly important because two of the three POTA sites I was activating required me to be on the English side.

Yes, this was actually a three-fer activation (!!!) from the English side of the line:

  • Berwickshire Coastal Path National Scenic Trail (GB-1449)
  • Forth to Farne Way (English Side Only) National Scenic Trail (GB-6880)
  • The Cuddy (English Side) National Historic Trail (GB-6928)

A Walk Along the Cuddy Trail

For this activation, I decided to film the walk out to the site. It was my first time hiking this particular section of coastline, and I thought it would be fun to take you along with me.

It was incredibly gusty that day.

I crossed a bridge over the railway before emerging into a beautiful pasture filled with sheep. The trail itself wasn’t always particularly obvious, but I knew where I needed to go, and the walk was easy.

And the scenery?

Absolutely stunning!

The coastline here is spectacular, with sheer cliffs dropping toward the North Sea.

This is one of those places where the landscape alone makes the walk worthwhile, and the video gives you a much better idea of what I was seeing than I could ever convey in words.

As I continued along the coast, I encountered a sign for the Cuddy Trail. There’s a wonderful bit of local terminology here: cuddy or cuddie is Scots for a donkey. The trail has historical connections to the old coastal routes used to move goods such as coal and fish.

For purposes of Parks on the Air, the section I was activating was on the English side, even though the Cuddy Trail itself continues into Scotland.

I continued through gates and along the cliffs, sometimes quite close to the edge, until I finally reached the England-Scotland border.

There was no mistaking it.

A fence marked the border, and a sign clearly delineated the English and Scottish sides.

I looked back toward the railway and the A1 and could see no obvious way of accessing this part of the trail from the parking area we had visited previously.

That confirmed that I had made the right decision to find this alternative access point.

Now I just needed to get on the air!

Setting Up in the Wind

There were no trees where I wanted to operate, so I had planned accordingly.

I brought my POTA 20 carbon-fiber mast and paired it with my Packtenna 9:1 unun random-wire antenna, using its 31-foot radiator.

I placed the mast against a fence post on the English side of the border and used the KE8PTX 3D-printed and fiberglass spike at the bottom of the pole to secure it in the ground.

There was one wee issue: the wind.

The gusts were quite strong at times, and I worried the carbon-fiber mast might bend and sail down the cliff. That would have been an unfortunate way to end an activation—and I wasn’t sure how I would retrieve a mast that had disappeared over the edge. I could already imagine the headline in the Northumberland Gazette: “American radio geek litters our beautiful national coast with carbon fiber poles, wires and who knows what else!” Oh, the shame…

I hadn’t yet purchased the bungee cord that I would later add to my field kit specifically for situations like this, so I improvised. Fortunately, I had a throw line in my backpack. I used the end of it to tie the mast securely to the fence post, giving it the extra support and rigidity it needed to withstand the gusts. Worked a charm!

I then deployed the Packtenna random wire diagonally, positioning the transformer so it hung over the edge of the fence rather than resting on the ground or against the barbed wire.

From there, I ran my 25-foot RG-174 coaxial cable to a spot where I could sit down with my Helinox chair and operate.

The Helinox is wonderfully lightweight, but in winds like this, it can behave like a little parachute or kite. I used my groundcloth and very carefully placed everything on the ground, making sure the chair was always weighted to secure it to terra firma.

I then pulled out my N0RNM folding kneeboard, placed my Elecraft KX2 on top, connected the antenna and paired the station with my UMPP-1 Morse code key.

Everything was finally in place.

Now I just needed propagation to cooperate. Time to hit the air!

CE7ET: Mini POTA DXpedition to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) CL-0105 / 3G0YT

July 7–11, 2026

I arrived at Mataveri Airport around 1:00 PM after a five-hour flight from Santiago. From there I walked to my hotel, located right next to the airport and only a few blocks away (although in Hanga Roa, the blocks are surprisingly long). Once settled into my room, I unpacked my small backpack containing all my radio gear:

  • Elecraft KX2 with internal ATU and internal battery
  • Bioenno 3 Ah BLF-1203AB battery and Bioenno charger
  • Homebrew EFHW antenna using DX-WIRE Ultralight UL wire and a Fair-Rite 2643625002 toroid
  • Sotabeams Carbon 6 mast
  • RG-316 coaxial cable
  • MECCANIXITY USB-C PD to DC fast-charging cables
  • FT8TW running on my smartphone

Day 1 – July 7

The National Park begins only about 200 meters from the hotel, with Rano Kau volcano providing a spectacular backdrop and dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

After lunch, I set up the antenna and started calling CQ on FT8.

The bands were almost completely dead. I could only hear a little activity on 15 meters; 20, 17, 12, and 10 meters were absolutely silent. Since 10 meters is my favorite band, it was a little disappointing, but there was no choice except to concentrate on FT8 on 15 meters.

I managed 23 contacts in about 45 minutes before a light drizzle started, forcing me to pack up.

Back at the hotel, the staff kindly allowed me to install the antenna on the terrace outside my room, which offered a beautiful ocean view. Unfortunately, the bands remained completely closed, so there was nothing to do but wait for the following day.

Day 2 – July 8

I scanned every band from 40 through 10 meters. Nothing.

Between sightseeing and enjoying the local food, 30 meters finally opened just enough for me to complete four QSOs. Later in the day, brief openings appeared on both 10 and 15 meters, allowing me to add a few more contacts. By day’s end, I had logged eleven QSOs before propagation disappeared once again.

A fellow amateur told me that propagation forecasts indicated excellent conditions on 10 meters. He even drove to the island’s southern coast to operate FT8 with 100 watts.

Later he reported back: not a single contact.

Day 3 – July 9

I wanted to start the day with a memorable activation from the top of Rano Kau volcano.

I began hiking up the official trail, but much of it had turned into a muddy mess. After correcting a wrong turn, I completed the one-hour climb—about 3.5 kilometers.

At the top, I asked one of the park rangers for permission to set up my station, but unfortunately she declined. She either couldn’t—or simply wouldn’t—understand that my carbon-fiber mast doesn’t require being driven into the ground and would only rest against an existing fence. Later another ranger suggested an alternative location where I might be able to operate, but I decided not to push my luck.

So I hiked back down and searched for a more welcoming operating spot.

That day I completed 37 FT8 contacts.

Later I received a notification from the airline informing me that my flight for the following day had been canceled because of severe weather.

Well… every cloud has a silver lining.

Day 4 – July 10

The weather became truly brutal, with only occasional breaks between the storms. Since the park was directly across from my hotel, I took advantage of every lull in the wind to go outside and call CQ.

I managed only three QSOs.

By midday, the wind was blowing at a sustained 85 km/h (53 mph), with gusts reaching nearly 120 km/h (75 mph). Tree branches came down, several trees were uprooted, and power outages affected the island.

Despite the conditions, it was still an unforgettable day. Whenever the weather briefly improved, I walked along the cliffs to watch the Pacific Ocean at its wildest.

Later that night, as the wind eased slightly, I headed out once more to operate FT8 and managed a few additional contacts, already on July 11 UTC.

Day 5 – July 11

My flight was scheduled for 2:00 PM, leaving enough time for one final activation.

I found a nice location inside the park, raised the antenna, and began checking the bands. Suddenly I heard a very strong station on 15-meter SSB… and just as quickly it disappeared. That was enough to convince me that phone operation wasn’t going to happen.

In the end I completed 26 contacts on 15 meters.

Then it was time to quickly pack everything away, grab lunch, and hurry to the airport.

Final Thoughts

Easter Island remains one of the most challenging places I’ve ever operated from in terms of propagation.

Last year I also attempted an activation from the island and ended up with zero contacts. During the entire trip, I never even heard a single FT8 signal. The only station I copied was one LU station on 20-meter SSB one evening. Propagation during that visit was exceptionally poor.

My impression is that Rapa Nui often sits in an awkward position relative to the typical propagation hop distances on many HF paths. From my home station in Chiloé (FE37eo), I’ve tried listening for every DXpedition from Easter Island, and I’ve never managed to hear a single one.

Other areas that I often find difficult—especially on 10 meters—include southern Africa, which I partly blame on the South Atlantic Anomaly, Bolivia, because it’s frequently located near the midpoint of the propagation hop, and Southeast Asia, where both propagation and operating times work against me.

During this trip, I also spent several sessions calling CQ in CW for 15 to 30 minutes at a time without hearing a single reply. Only on the final day did I finally appear on Reverse Beacon Network on 10 meters. At one point, someone attempted to answer my call on 15 meters, but the signal was so weak that it was barely readable.

This certainly wasn’t a DXpedition measured by the number of QSOs.

Instead, it became an unforgettable experience. Operating QRP from one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth is something truly special—even when propagation decides not to cooperate.

Things don’t always go as planned. On two occasions, I suddenly noticed that FT8TW wasn’t recording the log. I took screenshots of what I could and hope I didn’t lose anything.

DF7CW: Field Testing the IC-705 and SOTAmāt in Märkische Schweiz (DE-0083) Before a Swedish Trail Adventure

Hi, Thomas and the QRPer community! Nils (DF7CW) here from Berlin, Germany. I’ve been a licensed ham since February 2026, and frankly, watching the YouTube videos of DR OM K4SWL was the reason I immediately fell in love with QRP CW. If you look closely at my gear, you’ll spot my “CW ONLY” patch—I do not use any other modes at all!

Lately, I have been meticulously planning a rugged radio expedition to Sweden’s Kungsleden (The King’s Trail). My goal is to activate six never-before-activated POTA parks along the trail, plus a SOTA summit. Because this area is a massive wilderness, I will be operating completely off the grid with zero cellular internet. My previous portable experience consists of two POTA and two SOTA (8 points each) activations completed in Austria during a family vacation, so this upcoming hike will be a major step up.

Before heading north, I needed a proper dress rehearsal to test my satellite spotting workflow and my antenna deployment. So, on July 25th, I packed up my kit and headed out into the high grass of Märkische Schweiz Nature Park (DE-0083) for a trial run.

The Gear and the “DHL Hack”

For this test, my transceiver of choice was the trusty Icom IC-705 (though I will be taking my Mountain Topper Currahee to Sweden with me for obvious weight-saving reasons). I, of course, keep my output strictly at 5 Watts QRP. My paddle is a gorgeous blue Begali Traveler Light, which I find to be exceptionally precise and comfortable to use.

For the antenna, I use the Spooltenna Ultra EFHW. On my upcoming Swedish expedition, I plan to use a SOTABeams Tactical Mini mast to get the wire in the air. However, here is a quick tip for any operators traveling internationally for activations: I actually sent my SOTABeams mast ahead to Sweden via DHL, along with a lot of my other equipment! It ended up being significantly cheaper and much less of a headache than trying to fly with a fiberglass pole and extra gear in my luggage.

Because my mast was already in transit to Scandinavia, I had to enlist the help of a “German tree ©” and improvise for the feedpoint of the EFHW. I used my Nordic walking sticks to support the end of the Spooltenna. As you can see in my mandatory selfie (complete with a pen in my mouth for logging!), leaning the trekking pole back against the tension of the wire actually works brilliantly.

Spotting Off the Grid: Garmin inReach & SOTAmāt

The biggest hurdle for Kungsleden is the total lack of internet. How do you generate a pileup when you have no signal to spot yourself? Enter the Garmin inReach Mini 2 and SOTAmāt. As you can see in the photo, the Garmin is strapped directly to my backpack.

By using the SOTAmāt system (sotamat.com), you can completely bypass the need for a cell connection. SOTAmāt acts as an email-to-API bridge. You simply use the Garmin’s satellite connection to send a formatted text to a specific email address, and SOTAmāt automatically parses it and posts your spot to the POTA and SOTA networks.

During this activation, it worked flawlessly. I typed potapostspot DF7CW DE-0083 7.03350 cw QRP into the Garmin Messenger app, and within minutes, the Reverse Beacon Network and the POTA hunters knew exactly where to find me.

On The Air

Propagation on July 25th was stable but not explosive, with an SFI of 155 and an A-index of 8. I started my activation at 15:56 UTC on the 40-meter band.

The 40m band proved incredibly reliable for intra-European hops. Right out of the gate, I logged SE6S up in Sweden—a great omen for the upcoming trip! That was quickly followed by a steady stream of hunters in England (G5TCP), Poland (SP9OUV, SP5GB), Czechia (OK2VOX), Norway (LA8JKA), and several local stations here in Germany. I bumped up to 14.052 MHz on 20m for a quick QSO with S58MT in Slovenia, then hopped back to 40m to round out the session.

In roughly 41 minutes, I put 12 QSOs in the log. It wasn’t a massive pileup, but it was exactly what I needed. It proved that my 5W CW signal, my improvised trekking-pole antenna, and my satellite spotting workflow were 100% trail-ready.

Conclusion

Getting out to DE-0083 gave me the massive boost of confidence I needed. If you are planning a deep wilderness activation, I cannot recommend the Garmin / SOTAmāt combo enough. It completely changes the game for remote operators.

Next stop: Kungsleden! Keep an ear out for my SM/DF7CW spots on the cluster from August 16th to the 27th.

Roman History, a Family Day Out, and a CW ATNO: A Travelogue & POTA Activation in Melrose, Scotland

One of the greatest joys of spending an extended period of time in southeastern Scotland this summer has been the opportunity to explore places we might have otherwise overlooked. Better yet, many of those family outings have also provided opportunities to fit in a Parks on the Air activation.

On Thursday, June 25, 2026, we decided to spend the afternoon in the picturesque Borders town of Melrose, about 45–50 minutes from our cottage in Foulden. The main attraction wasn’t radio—it was history.

I’d recently learned about the Trimontium Museum, and knowing how much one of my daughters enjoys medieval and Roman history, I suspected it would make for a wonderful family excursion. It certainly didn’t disappoint.

Discovering Trimontium

The Trimontium Museum tells the story of one of the most important Roman military sites in Scotland.

The Roman fort of Trimontium, named for the nearby Eildon Hills (“the place of the three hills”), occupied a strategic position along Dere Street—the principal Roman road connecting northern England with southern Scotland.

While it wasn’t the northernmost Roman fort ever established, Trimontium was one of the largest and most significant Roman military complexes north of Hadrian’s Wall. From this base, Roman troops monitored movement through the Borders, supported campaigns farther north, and maintained Rome’s presence in what was then the very edge of its empire.

Although the fort disappeared beneath farmland over the centuries, its rediscovery came largely through the pioneering excavations of archaeologist James Curle between 1905 and 1910. His meticulous work uncovered an extraordinary collection of Roman artifacts that dramatically expanded our understanding of Roman Scotland.

The Trimontium Museum does an outstanding job of bringing that history to life. It’s a relatively small museum, but it’s packed with fascinating archaeological finds, interactive displays, and thoughtful interpretation.

While many of the most spectacular artifacts recovered from the site—including ornate cavalry equipment and other remarkable treasures—are now preserved in Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland (which we visited a couple of weeks later), the museum in Melrose provides an excellent introduction to the story behind those discoveries and many artifacts of its own.

POTA Research

After our museum visit, it was time to squeeze in a Parks on the Air activation.

As always, I had done a bit of homework beforehand and discovered that Melrose lies within Eildon and Leaderfoot National Scenic Area (GB-1508).

What surprised me was that the park had only been activated twice before—and neither activation had been in CW. That meant this would become a CW All-Time New One (ATNO) for hunters (woot!), which made the activation all the more appealing.

One of the fascinating aspects of GB-1508 is that the protected area encompasses not only the surrounding countryside but much of Melrose itself.

In theory, I could have activated the park from nearly anywhere within the boundary—even while sitting outside a pub in the middle of town! While that would have been novel, I suspected the combination of urban noise, RF interference, and puzzled pub patrons listening to someone hammering out Morse code and talking to himself might not have made for the best operating experience!

Instead, I asked one of the museum volunteers if there was a quiet green space nearby.

They recommended a small park just a short walk away, and it proved to be exactly what I was looking for.

The park itself was modest: an open grassy field that looked ideal for football or cricket, bordered by hedges with a couple of benches along one side. Behind the hedge were tennis courts.

It was peaceful, accessible, and just far enough removed from the bustle of town.

The AX4 to the Rescue

This also turned out to be the perfect opportunity to continue testing the prototype Elecraft AX4 antenna.

The back rail of the park bench was unusually wide, and initially I wondered whether I’d be able to mount the AX4 at all.

Fortunately, Wayne Burdick designed the AX4 clamp with a surprisingly generous adjustment range. At nearly its maximum opening—about three inches—it clamped securely onto the bench without any trouble.

My next challenge was managing the 31-foot counterpoise in a busy public park. The last thing I wanted was for someone—or someone’s dog—to become entangled in it.

I solved the problem by running the counterpoise neatly along the hedge behind the bench. The only exposed section was the short distance between the bench and the hedge, so I laid my packed Helinox chair bag across it as a highly visible marker. It worked perfectly, and everyone who walked by naturally stepped over it.

With the antenna in place, I settled into my Helinox chair, balanced my trusty Elecraft KX2 on my kneeboard, connected everything together, opened my notebook, and was ready to get on the air.

I had a bit of a shock lately, I’ll admit. I didn’t realize a humungous milestone was creeping up on me in the POTA world. But before I get to that let’s talk about all of the planning I’ve been doing lately. I swear the two are unrelated, or at least they were at first.

Because you are frequent visitors of QRPer.com, you’ve already seen what happens when my plans go awry and what happens when my tenacity takes control, even if it takes a half year to bring to conclusion. For me these two most recent activations were pushing my personal limits, something I seem to be trying to do of late. I don’t know why I’ve been pushing my limits in recent years, actually, I’ve always just followed my heart. Being risk-averse by nature this means a whole bunch of planning to any new place, especially if in the back country.

And along the way in planning I took a peek at my statistics and was gob-smacked, for one of the values was like this really big number and it caught me off guard – 495 activations in Canada. Along the lines of luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation, after those two Banff activations I began mapping a path to get number 500. And because it would be my Quincentennial Canadian Activation, I knew I had to make it absolutely epic and in nature if only to celebrate it. And I had this summit on my radar that would be within a POTA entity as well. The plan was finalized and to be executed within a week. Exciting!

Twin Cairns, aka VE6-AS/102

I’d been planning a complex back country daytrip to Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park CA-3829 for about six weeks ever since I learned that one edge of it is at the top of the Sunshine Ski Resort. It is fully a back country park with no road access that I’ve been able to find.

My planning involved many emails going back and forth with Parks Canada, Sunshine Ski Resort and BC Parks to try and scope out and see if I could get myself to the top of the hill and proceed to the summit without running afoul of any rules that may be in place. Initially I wanted to bike up and back down after having done a SOTA on the Twin Cairns peak, but biking is not allowed as it’s a sensitive environment and, as most of it is within a National Park, a restricted activity.

So I pivoted my plan: to my line of thinking, it’s about a 2.5km hike following natural contour lines and within my personal abilities, so perhaps that approach would work. But I would come to learn that I could not hike to the summit of Twin Cairns as there is no trail to it. Further, one must stay on the trail in this park most of the year. Hiking is allowed to the summit from October 1 to June 15 when there’s snow on the ground, but that is beyond my abilities and my current physical condition.

So this is where my tenacity kicks in. I didn’t want to let this opportunity go by me as I’ve not activated the park and the way in is by foot. The only way I can get up there is with some sort of assistance, but a helicopter is out of my budget and likely frowned upon in any case. However the Sunshine Ski resort opens up each summer for people to get up to the Meadows you see on the map above. At this point in my life I am not crazy about sweating my backside off and would rather ride than walk 25km in one day.

And that’s how I came to purchase my first lift ticket in 25 years late in July of 2026.

In parallel with this set of activities, my Kensington Laptop backpack was getting too stuffed with everything I might need for a back country walk. I discovered this on my 4th attempt activation where I had to leave behind my key survival essentials, a calculated risk as the fire station was only .5km away as the crow flies and the trail is extremely popular.

Thus I got into a deep dark rabbit hole with our our very own M5SWL who told me to get the Savotta Niukka 20L that he just acquired. He opened the door and I walked through it willingly, but first before laying out some bucks I did this early analysis which involved a metric scale and measuring stick, along with a spreadsheet:

I may just have put the anal [retentive] in Analysis … 🙂 Not shown: Bear Spray and Air Horn, but they hang outside my pack anyways. Yes, I will add this into my master gear list as someone suggested to me previously (you know who you are).
The analysis showed me that 20L was not nearly enough, especially when I had to consider the camera gear I’d also carry.  I also mentally added about 3L for an item of clothing or two.

A number of hours and some store visits later, and eschewing high dollar backpacks -I can get away with that given their relatively low-use- I landed up at Decathalon Sports in Calgary and procured this Quechua NH Escape 500 32L pack. It can double as a laptop bag should it need to and it’s more in my cost mantra of Zip-Loc instead of Red Oxx, and it comes with a 10 year guarantee. No shade on Red Oxx as they make fantastic product, but it’s outside of my usual budget.
