Though there are various methods that facilitate second language acquisition, a new learner still stumbles to choose the best. For a non-native learner who has some acquaintance with English needs a simple method that can train him/her to speak or write flawlessly. Encountering learners from both rural and urban environs enabled us to focus on forging a simple and easy method so that teaching-learning process becomes more effective. There is a systematic approach to learning grammar rules and the learner has to go step by step without any deviation from it. For convenience we presented the whole process in five ‘Road Signs.’ Meant for sharing and not mere instruction, this paper gives a bird’s eye view of a teaching method useful for any new learner wishing to improve essential communication in English."

Dicing with Class, Race and Gender: Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye

Class, colour and culture always differentiate the human society. Instead of relishing the differences to our advantage, we struggle to suppress and destroy others. Caucasians despised Negroids and the Mongoloids are always in arms against Caucasians. We lost our sense of fraternity. The void between the rich and the poor, the gulf between blacks and whites and the drift between man and woman is keenly palpable. In the name of this class, race and gender some invisible hand is always playing the dice. Ever since human society emerged from its primitive state it has remained fundamentally divided between classes. Focusing on this aspect this paper attempts to critically analyze how classism marginalizes the poor, make them collect self-contempt by heaps and often degrade them to animal plane in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye.

Morrison is one among them, yet she stands unique in her treatment. She focused her attention not on the white characters forcing direct authority, but on the black characters’ troubled psyche and its effect on their behavior within the context of oppression. Even though there are no white characters in Sula , Morrison made Sula adopt the vagaries of white life and she comes back to Bottom like a typhoon.  Her arrival coincides with the death of robins and her presence creates a whirlpool of problems to serene Nel and her family. Experimenting with life Sula creates storm in the community but in her death Sula transcends and establishes continuity between past and present, temporal and eternal, natural and supernatural.

However, the true spirit of education preached by great teachers of yester years got vaporized in the fumes of modern mundane existence. In the process of paving a well heated high way in academic arena, English literature is carefully sidelined and substituted by lessons about technology in the Engineering curriculum. Despite many arguments on this issue Literature remained unappealing to technology driven world. In fact to reduce the complexity and demystify the knowledge of engineering, the modern student requires language and literature to compete with the challenges not just of advanced tests and courses but also of life. Keeping this in view this paper stresses the importance of literature in language acquisition and critical thinking ability especially in technical institutions. This approach certainly brings out an interesting teaching-lear...

One's perception of beauty is to a large extent based on one's cultural identity. But with the passage of time, standards of beauty have changed, disfiguring the cultural identity and causing chaos and confusion. In India and Africa, people still adopt white standards of beauty. Though these colonized countries are freed and emancipated, their psyche is yet to be decolonized and restored to their original selves. Is it not true that the malaise lies with imperialism? Imperialism is such a destructive political ideology that it not only exploited the economic resources of occupied lands but also destroyed the cultural identities of the subjugated population to perpetuate the regime. Hence, this paper focuses on how imperialism impacted the standards of beauty and analyze various aspects associated with it.

With the growing importance of science and technology, commerce and management, economics and administration, research and development the world is forced to voice in one language. Keeping this in view my paper focuses on English language and how it affects the individual identity and aims at elevating the challenges encountered by the English teachers in the creation of neutral culture and understanding. Also there is special focus on important observations regarding how cultural differences could create textual differences in interpretation.

No wonder then the teaching methods proposed by academic scientists are only catalysts that can supplement teaching-learning process, which is independent to a teacher and is subjected to change based on place and time. Orthodox religion and liberal language are always paradoxical to each other however the ubiquity of English language is changing the perspective of even conservative countries. There are the linguistic, cultural, educational, political and personal challenges that Arabic students face while learning English language. This paper is my sincere attempt to incubate my teaching-learning experience and to provide a preparatory glance for those who wish to see their career prosperity in the Arab world.

Literary discussions moved from concerns about aestheticism to the nature of civilization. W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot are the two best minds that tried to probe the global crisis of the day. It is nothing short of clash of civilizations. The world split into two and pushed the draggers at each other's throats. The utopian communist ideology and the colonial and imperialistic democratic states reduced human beings to mere statistics and demography. W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot, highly influenced by the Oriental thought and literature, explored the essence of the Hindu religion. Hinduism and Buddhism preached a way of life in which mankind can make peace with itself. Hindu avatars of God assure its believers that at every age God will ensure the defeat of evil and restoration of righteousness. This essence gave hope to both Yeats and Eliot that every age has its own Christ and faith is the blood of mankind.

Both the slaves and their masters accepted their status of birth without undue question. Anthropological and sociological changes coloured slavery with tints and shades of human desires. Slaves in most societies were despised. For an insightful comprehension of the system of slavery it is essential to trace out the attitudes of the world's great religions and civilizations towards it. In the passing of time slavery got faded as an institution but not yet uprooted from human psyche. It is still playing its dice in the form of class, caste, race and gender exploitation. Without proper check in the present times if we continue exploding science and stripping off the dignity of the weak, soon we might pay a heavy price for that.

The basic source even for history is literature. One has to understand that the early literature has influenced the formation of religions. All religions greatly influenced subsequent literature and the holy Bible is no exception. In this paper we are trying to make an attempt to highlight how the earlier tragedies influenced the tragedy of Jesus or salvation of Jesus and how the later tragedies were influenced by the New Testament. The purpose of religion and literature is to assuage the inner turmoil and to soften the ruffled feathers of human emotions.

What is love? and why one loves? are the questions that battered the brilliant minds for a long time. For Shakespeare 'love is not time's fool, ' for John Keats love is the ultimate truth as he said, 'Beauty is truth, truth is beauty' and for M. K. Gandhi love is God. Love, Truth and God serve as synonyms and whoever wanted to pen something, cannot escape them. Love or its absence constitutes the whole of our world literature. Toni Morrison is no exception. Her master work Song of Solomon is perhaps the greatest novel ever written by Afro-American which has a close affinity to Alex Haley's Roots. The protagonist, Milkman, in a transcendental stage finds himself metamorphosed -discovers his identity, ancestral legacy and capacity for love and joy and learns to fly without ever leaving the ground.

Focusing on educational outcomes and effective utilisation of the available ICT initiatives such as community radio and TV academy, English faculty took an initiative of collaborative learning approach targeting language proficiency and social responsibility in students and academic awareness in the community. Quantification of the outcome is interesting and worthy enough to share on a research platform. With this view, this paper presents the outcomes of the approach that etched a mark in the lives of the students and the community. Alongside, the establishment of TV academy widened the scope of creative and artistic ability of the young minds. MALL, WALL, CALL and other ICT tools gave a new face to teachinglearning method, yet the outcome in terms of English language proficiency is not satisfactory.

Elements of chance and fate may play havoc and cause turbulence, but hope heals all wounds and, with the passage of time, soothes ruffled emotions. The very purpose of literature is to rekindle hope in the bleakness and absurdity of human existence. In fact the majority of modern fiction grapples with social ostracism and psychological trauma. A reoccurring theme in modern fiction is that the spark of life and light at the end of the tunnel drives the characters to crawl through misery and marginalization. The hope most often driving these characters is the prospect of redemption and the promise of an entirely different future. Two emblematic works from modern fiction, James Joyce's fictional work Ulysses and Bucket's absurd drama Waiting for Godot, aim at a trivialization of the everyday struggle of common human beings. But the rendition of these struggles in artistic form transcends those caricatures and brings them to new heights of meaningfulness. Keeping this meaningfulness as a focus, I highlight the element of 'hope' in the first seven novels of Toni Morrison, Morrison, the first black woman Nobel Laureate, scavenged the mutilated lives of 'niggers' and sketched them with savage truthfulness in her scrape book. She generated a gallery of pitch dark portraits of the blacks in her writings. Women were given larger than life roles in Morrison's novels and they play for the good of the black community. Reconciliation, deliverance, safe haven, and love are distinct synonyms of hope and are some of the oft repeated themes in Morrison's works. In almost all her novels, she portrays the struggle of blacks to adapt to the white ways of life. In the process, many of her characters withered away. But still she persisted with her experimental envisioning of the life of blacks as they invariably live as a minority in the white world. In the process of her writing, she evolved a unique black identity for both black men and women.
