Rian Rezende, Ph.D., is a professor in the Arts and Design Department at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). He is a social scientist and designer. He completed his B.S. in social sciences at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, his M.A degree and his PhD in Design at Arts and Design Department PUC-Rio. He is the founder of 5D Magic design studio and one of the creators of Wonder Cards, a card game about project creation that explores the senses and imagination. His studies explore innovative methodology and thinking through the construction of experiences, artifacts and spaces that combine methods, games, narrative, imagination, magic and design.

Wonder Cards Storytelling: Imagination, Storytelling, and Role-playing in the Creation of Objects, Spaces, and Experiences

This article explores storytelling and role-playing as resources to create objects, spaces, and e... more This article explores storytelling and role-playing as resources to create objects, spaces, and experiences in the field of design. To this end, we present Wonder Cards. The game is an “imagination instrument” that, through distant analogies (de Cruz and de Smedt 2010), assist in the development of narratives. A tale needs to arouse feelings – empathy, love, fear, nostalgia, and many others. The materiality of this abstraction helps the individual generate notions of belonging and temporality for himself and for others (Pallasma 2012). Human beings express themselves through objects and spaces: what we call our material culture. They are an indispensable part of the materialization of sensations and affect. Accordingly, magnificent tales create memories that express the objects and spaces invented. Objects and spaces within an intrinsic narrative create memory. Memory helps construct and preserve cultural and personal identity, since living itself is a constant movement toward recollection (Cardoso 2011). Therefore, the merging of objects with subjectivity is exceedingly important to culture construction. Nonetheless, how does one create these tales? Structures can facilitate this creative process. This article presents the constitutive elements of our creative tool, the implemented experiments, discussions, and debriefings (Atwater 2016) derived from the use of the card game on workshops and design classes at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. These activities with participants, objects, spaces, and experiences are explored by the creation of narrative scenes and storytelling resources through fantasy (Barthes 2013) and role-playing (Bienia 2016) and by using the Wonder Cards. This union enables the participants to live situations removed from the creative environment where they usually work, thus stimulating creation in new situations and imaginary narrative environments. The Wonder Cards assist in the construction of tales, which inspire the development of objects, spaces, and experiences by the participants.

Wonder Design and the Exploration of Senses and Imagination

This article explores the relationship between design, imagination, senses, places and objects. I... more This article explores the relationship between design, imagination, senses, places and objects. It was based on Richard Holmes' theoretical concepts, particularly on the period designated " Age of Wonder " , Robert Silverman and Thomas Hankins theories on " Instruments and the Imagination " about the parallel of imagination and the real world, the ideas of Juhani Pallasmaa on senses and architecture, and the Design Fiction theories of Stuart Candy. A conceptual survey of the correlation between imagination and the senses makes us wonder how objects/spaces present themselves to men and how men perceive them. Which senses rules this communication? We examine the relevance of senses and imagination on the creation of artifacts and surroundings, in order to build a more intimate relationship between them. To explore this connection we developed the " Wonder Cards " card game focused on the development of ideas, objects and surroundings that stimulate senses and imagination. We are testing the game on Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and workshops to analyse and understand the use of these elements in design projects where emotion and wonder is the key factor.

This article presents a conceptual and methodological synthesis based on experiments that culmina... more This article presents a conceptual and methodological synthesis based on experiments that culminated in the Incorporeal Project, and its future developments. Incorporeal is a ludic multidisciplinary multimedia platform that supports the application of TIN (Techniques for Interactive Stories) as a didactic interface. TIN is a method to use interactive stories such as RPG (Role-Playing Game) to build knowledge and competencies through participation and co-authoring. The participants collectively and cooperatively build the narrative and must incorporate their own productions into the supports. To guide and stimulate this process we propose the Poetic Design as a method confi guration of objects that promote a refi guration of the subject and his/her context.

Incorporais é uma plataforma lúdica, multidisciplinar e multimidiática que dá suporte à aplicação das TNI (Técnicas para Narrativas Interativas) como interface didática, que são um método para uso de histórias interativas como RPG (Role-playing Game) para a construção de conhecimento e competências por meio da participação e coautoria. Os participantes constroem coletiva e cooperativamente a narrativa devendo incorporar suas produções aos suportes. Para nortear e estimular esse processo propomos o Design Poético, um método para uma configuração de objetos que promova uma refiguração dos sujeitos e de seus contextos.
