How to Set Specific Permissions

Permissions allow you to add very specific permissions to WordPress users, roles and groups.

If you want to provide permissions for a whole post type, the best option is adding a Extra Role. Using Extra Roles is the most lightweight way to control user access, and will provide the best performance.

However, Permissions are ideal if you want to have very specific and granular permissions. For example, you can allow users to edit or view only Posts in a single category. Or you can allow users to edit only specific Posts and Pages.

  • Go to “Permissions” in the WordPress admin menu.
  • Choose the group you want to edit.
  • Click the “Set Specific Permissions” tab.

First, you will be able to choose which post type you want to target:

Next, you can choose which permission to give: View, Edit or Assign Term:

Next, you can drill down and decide exactly which items this access control will apply to. In this screenshot, we are giving users in the Author role the ability to edit three specific posts.

  • Group: Author
  • Post Type: Posts
  • Operation: Edit
  • Adjustment: Enable
  • Select Posts: We've chosen three posts.
