O que é o Present Continuous?

O Present Continuous é um tempo verbal usado para falar de ações que estão
acontecendo agora, no momento da fala, ou em progresso em um período de tempo
presente.

Estrutura Gramatical

Afirmativa:

Sujeito + verbo “to be” (am / is / are) + verbo com “-ing”

Sujeito Verbo to be Verbo principal (com -ing)

I am working

You are studying

He/She/It is eating

We/You/They are playing

Exemplo:

●​ I am reading a book now.​


(Eu estou lendo um livro agora.)​

Negativa:

Sujeito + verbo “to be” + not + verbo com “-ing”

Exemplo:

●​ She is not (isn't) watching TV.​


(Ela não está assistindo TV.)​

Interrogativa:

Verbo “to be” + sujeito + verbo com “-ing”

Exemplo:
●​ Are you listening to music?​
(Você está ouvindo música?)​

Quando Usar o Present Continuous

1. Ações que estão acontecendo agora (neste exato momento)

●​ I am writing a message right now.​


(Estou escrevendo uma mensagem neste momento.)​

2. Ações temporárias (que não são permanentes)

●​ She is staying at her cousin’s house this week.​


(Ela está ficando na casa da prima esta semana.)​

3. Mudanças ou tendências

●​ More and more people are using electric cars.​


(Cada vez mais pessoas estão usando carros elétricos.)​

4. Situações irritantes ou repetitivas com “always” (com sentido negativo)

●​ He is always forgetting his keys!​


(Ele está sempre esquecendo as chaves!)​

5. Futuro próximo com planos já organizados (normalmente com referência de tempo)

●​ We are meeting the teacher at 10 a.m. tomorrow.​


(Vamos nos encontrar com o professor às 10h da manhã amanhã.)​

Regras de ortografia para o -ING

1.​ Verbos terminados em -e: remove-se o “e” e acrescenta-se “-ing”​

○​ make → making​

○​ write → writing​

2.​ Verbos CVC (consoante-vogal-consoante), com sílaba tônica final: dobra-se a


última consoante​

○​ run → running​
○​ sit → sitting​

○​ begin → beginning​

3.​ Verbos terminados em -ie: troca-se “ie” por “y”​

○​ die → dying​

○​ lie → lying​

Verbos que geralmente não usamos no Present Continuous

Alguns verbos de estado (stative verbs) não costumam ser usados no Present Continuous
porque indicam emoções, posse ou estados mentais, como:

●​ like, love, hate, know, understand, want, need, believe, belong, remember​

✔ Correto:


●​ I want some water.​
Errado:​

●​ I am wanting some water.​
