As a result, traffic crashes along mountainous roads are likely to have different characteristics to crashes on roads in flatter areas; however, there is little research on this topic. The objective of this study is to examine the characteristics of road traffic crashes on rural mountainous roads and to compare these with the characteristics of crashes on non-mountainous roads. This paper explores and compares general crash characteristics including crash type, crash severity, roadway geometric features and environmental factors, and road user/vehicle characteristics. Five years of road traffic crash data (2008-2012) for Sabah were obtained from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research. During this period, a total of 25,439 crashes occurred along federal roads in Sabah, of which 4,875 crashes occurred in mountainous areas. Categorical data analysis tec...

To achieve this, an extensive set of road traffic data was collected through field surveys and secondary sources, and a set of cutting-edge statistical and economic models were developed to investigate (i) single-vehicle crashes, (ii) multi-vehicle crashes, and (iii) injury severity of traffic crashes along rural mountainous highways. Findings from this research will contribute to the design of a safer environment along rural mountainous highways, which are common in many developing countries.

Although drink driving has received most of the scholarly attention, there is growing evidence of the risks of alcohol-impaired walking. Alcohol-impaired pedestrians are over-represented in fatal crashes compared to non-impaired pedestrians. Additionally, empirical evidence shows that alcohol intoxication impairs road-crossing judgements. Besides some limited early research, much is unknown about the global prevalence and determinants of alcohol-impaired walking. Understanding alcohol-impaired walking will support health promotion initiatives and injury prevention. The present investigation has three aims: (1) compare the prevalence of alcohol-impaired walking across countries; (2) identify international groups of pedestrians based on psychosocial factors (i.e., Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and perceptions of risk); and (3) investigate how segments of pedestrians form their intention for alcohol-impaired walking using the extende...

The objective of this study was to identify factors affecting injury severity of young drivers using 5-years crash data (2008-2012) in Sabah, Malaysia. This study used a combination of parametric and non-parametric analysis to allows the specification of nonlinearities and interactions in addition to main effects. The results indicate that crashes on nighttime, federal roads and involved with a single-vehicle are positively associated with injury among young drivers. Interestingly, municipal roads, female drivers, crashes on the roundabout and T/Y junction are less likely to involve injury. A higher-order interaction suggests that not-at-fault young drivers involved with out-of-control or hit the object are more likely to be severe. On the other hand, young passenger car drivers involved in overturn and sideswipe collisions are negatively associated with the injury. It was also found that young ...

The objective of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the likelihood that traffic crashes along rural mountainous highways result in injuries. This study proposes a combination of decision tree and logistic regression techniques to model crash severity (injury vs non-injury), as the combined approach allows the specification of nonlinearities and interactions in addition to main effects. Both a Scobit model and a random parameters logit model, respectively accounting for an imbalance response variable and unobserved heterogeneities, are tested and compared. The study dataset contains a total of five years of crash data (2008 - 2012) on selected mountainous highways in Malaysia. The use of crash modelling to identify crash contributing factors along rural mountainous highways suffers from limitations in data availability, particularly in developing countries like Malaysia, and related challenges due to the presence of excess zero observations. To address these challenges, the objective of this study was to develop a safety performance function for multi-vehicle crashes along rural mountainous highways in Malaysia. To overcome the data limitations, an in-depth field survey, in addition to utilization of secondary data sources, was carried out to collect relevant information including roadway geometric factors, traffic characteristics, real-time weather conditions, cross-sectional element...
