Turmoil, Trauma and Tenacity in Early Jewish Literature

Literary trauma theory is recognised as being able to determine to what degree, historical trauma... more Literary trauma theory is recognised as being able to determine to what degree, historical trauma may be encoded within texts as well as how texts are able to facilitate a community in recovery and express their resilience. Given that psychological or emotional trauma is brought about as a result of an extraordinarily traumatic occurrence, survivors of psychological trauma have no sense of security and feel totally powerless in what they perceive to be an unhospitable and hazardous world. Here, a definable social group is overwhelmed by often traumatogenic events, including wars and natural calamities. In this context, Judaism focusses on communal memory of collective trauma, perceived or otherwise. This ongoing recollection forms an intrinsic part of the observant Jew’s ethnic or cultural identity. Obviously, any turmoil experienced in the recent past, is likely to be responsible for a traumatised community. However, in the case of Judaism, major trauma experienced by the people (who in many cases lived literally millennia in the past) is never allowed to be dismissed or forgotten. The trauma experienced by the community at a particular point in time becomes part and parcel of a collective memory as well as an identifying communal experience for future generations.

Can this portrait of the apostle be cor roborated based on his own letters? Or do we have to conclude that contemporaries of the apostle paint a more or less hagiographic picture of Paul's miraculous activities? What is the place of miracles surrounding Paul and wrought by him within the whole of his life and mission? A survey of Paul's letters allows us to get a view of how the apostle sees the function of signs, wonders, and mighty works within the dynamics of the pro clamation of the gospel. Viewed in this way, the possible difference between information based upon Paul's own communication and that of his contemporaries about him appears to decrease. A clearer picture of the part miracles play within the whole of Paul's mission may also help to rethink modern and postmodern worldviews from a biblical perspective.
