Bio

Niels is a software engineer who has worked on the WooCommerce core at Automattic for a few years. These days, he’s focusing on supporting and uplifting friends’ WordPress agencies with his experience and technical know-how.

He’s been active in the WordPress community for years, organising WordCamps and Meetups across Europe and Asia.

After studying computer science in Germany, he moved to the Netherlands, where he worked as a web developer and business analyst. Since mid-2014, he’s been travelling through South-East Asia, squashing bugs between palm trees and rice fields.

WordPress Origin Story

Niels first discovered WordPress back in 2005 with version 2.0. After spending a few years working with other platforms, he returned in 2014 with the release of WordPress 4.0, and hasn’t looked back since. From that point on, he’s been fully committed to crafting custom websites for clients and giving back to the global WordPress community.

A passionate contributor since early 2015, Niels has helped translate WordPress into multiple languages, and has shared several plugins with the wider ecosystem. That same year, he also stepped up as a WordCamp organiser, speaker, and WordPress.tv contributor.

In 2017, he joined Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, and became a Core Contributor the following year, continuing his mission to help make the web a better place for everyone. Since 2025, Niels has been working as a freelancer again, helping small- and mid-sized businesses grow.
