In the present study, five major academic libraries in New Delhi were surveyed to understand the prevalent policies and practices on determining the number of copies of books that are required in multiple copies. It was found that there was no consistency in the approach to deciding the number of copies in the libraries studied. Further it was noted that all the libraries arbitrarily decided on the number of copies to be purchased. The paper discusses a method that has been evolved to determine the number of copies. The method has been applied in one of the academic libraries under study which when combined with other measures have been found to be more effective in determining the number of copies required.

Data of important metrics of Facebook post usage were taken from ‗Facebook Insight' metrics of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women Library's Facebook page. Alongside, library usage data were used to understand the change in behaviour of library usage. The findings provide further support to the view that social network sites (i.e., Facebook) have the potential to be a cost-effective means of engaging users effectively irrespective of the size of the academic library. It is also found that collaboration and communication through Facebook were far more effective than traditional approaches. Since only the experience of a single institution is considered, it cannot be generalized that Facebook will be effective in every institutional context. However, the result provides a basis for academic libraries to consider experimenting with Facebook and its page to understand its effectiveness. This paper provides evidence that such initiatives can provide a measurable impact of Facebook as an outreach tool with minimal efforts.

It is found that about 1200 Indian S&T journals are being covered by at least one of the international I&A services and over 300 S&T journals are openly accessible. However, coverage of Indian S&T journals by major citation databases, Web of Science (WoS) & Scopus is relatively poor. The newly launched Indian Citation Index (ICI) promises to cover more Indian journals.

It provides description on technology used and the architecture of NewGenlib3.0 along with unique account of a library's experience as well as some evaluation by workshop participants
It is found that use of well designed system analysis along with well tested and widely supported OSS components and opens standards makes it a very user friendly and reliable Integrated Library Management software which can be easily implemented in a library without much technical hand or a rigorous training program. The open source development process facilitated the sharing and collaboration that made this rapid improvement possible.
In this paper, NewGenLib version 3.0.3 U5 has been tested and used, but 3.0.4 R1 released recently has not been tested.

Identifies that a main pre-requisite for OSS use in libraries is for the librarian to be able to harness the potential capabilities of its staff by motivating them effectively. Finds that OSS is more future oriented and more easily amenable for customization and can be an effective low-cost alternative to their proprietary counterpart.

– With a sustainable knowledge economy in the backdrop, India has seen an exponential growth of academic and sponsored research programmes across all major disciplines. There has been an exponential proliferation of Indian research journals to disseminate results of research carried out in India, by Indian researchers, from collaborative global research programmes. This paper aims to briefly describe a new initiative, the Indian Citation Index (ICI), which is a web‐based citation database of India‐based or India‐focused research journals.
Design/methodology/approach
– This paper gives a glimpse of the new ICI initiative. It briefly describes its promises and coverage. This paper is based on data available in the ICI portal and its information brochure.
Findings
– The ICI has made an attempt to create a web‐based citation database covering a whole range of disciplines, i.e. sciences, technologies, social sciences and humanities. This paper also identifies similar initiatives in the past, which failed due to the absence of web technologies and web‐based business models.
Research limitations/implications
– This paper informs the availability of a web‐based ICI to a worldwide audience. Many in‐depth studies can now be undertaken to measure productivity of Indian research journals vis‐à‐vis Indian researchers using datasets of this citation database. Some studies can also be made to measure popularity of Indian journals amongst foreign researchers and foreign research collaborators.
Social implications
– If this initiative is successful, other countries will be inspired to have their own country‐specific citation database to measure performance of home‐grown research periodicals.
Originality/value
– This is an informative news article to keep abreast of latest development of a country‐specific citation database.

Kolkata, delivered a lecture on ‘Harnessing the Power of Social Web in the Library: Hope vs. Reality’ at the 320th IASLIC Study CircleMeeting, held on July 31, 2014, at the seminar room
of IASLIC. At the outset Prof. P K Panigrahi,
Honorary General Secretary of IASLIC, introduced
the speaker and the president of the meeting Dr. Durga
Sankar Rath, Professor, DLIS, Vidyasagar University,
Medinipur. In his introductory remarks, Dr. Rath
explained the importance of the topic and invited Shri
Giri to deliever his lecture. Shri Giri, in his
presentation, referred to widespread use of social media
by the students and said that this provided a unique
opportunity to libraries and librarians to use this media
to communicate with their users in an economic way.
He pointed out that the possibility of harnessing social
media by libraries to communicate with their users
had been widely discussed in many seminars and
conferences and even in papers published by LIS
professionals of this country, but very little empirical
evidence was available concerning the prevalence of use
of social media in Indian academic libraries, though
such use was prevalent in academic libraries of USA,
countries of European Union, Malaysia and even
Bangladesh. Shri Giri then presented the results of a
study made by him based on data collected from
different social media sites and said that analysis of
such data supported the view that such media had the
potential to be a cost effective means of
communication with users effectively irrespective of
the size of the academic library. He said that the study
also found that collaboration and communication
through social media were far more effective than
traditional approaches. In the light of the above, he
emphasized that Indian libraries should embrace the
social media, which seemed to be pervasive in its use
in the society, in order to remain relevant with the
contemporary audience. The lecture was followed by
lively discussion. Shri S B Banerjee, Vice-President,
IASLIC Zone-6, handed over the certificate of
appreciation to the speaker, while Dr. J N Satpathy,
former President of IASLIC, distributed participation
certificates to the members of the audience. Dr. Jayati
Ghosh proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker and
the president of the meeting. She appreciated the
initiative taken by the Honorary General Secretary of
IASLIC for introducing distribution of certificates to
the speaker and the participants.
