Umitron collaborates with major Japanese supermarkets and top chefs to start test selling of sustainably grown fish, and is moving towards pushing the sustainable seafood movement beyond companies and associations

Umitron K. K. (Location: Tokyo, Co-founder / CEO Ken Fujiwara, hereinafter Umitron) started test selling of farm-grown red sea bream and grouper, which from an environmental and manpower resource perspective, is far more sustainable. From 8 February 2021, five supermarkets under the Tokyu Store Corporation, which is one of the most famous retailers in the Tokyo region, will be bringing these products from farm direct to consumers. These fish are grown by aqua farmers who have been using Umitron’s technology.

Using QR codes printed on the packaging, consumers will be able to access recipes that showcase delicious and easy-to-prepare meals as well as information about the farmer and the fish species they have purchased. These recipes were created by ‘Chefs for the Blue’, an advocacy group comprised of top chefs across Japan who are working together to raise consumer awareness about sustainable seafood in the country.
