The proliferation of AI models such as GPT-4, Open Assistant and DALL-E presents a paradigm shift in information acquisition and learning. This transformation poses substantial challenges for traditional teaching approaches and the role of educators. The paper explores the advantages and potential threats of using generative AI in education and necessary changes in curricula. It further discusses the need to foster digital literacy and the ethical use of AI. The paper’s findings are based on a survey conducted among university students exploring their usage and perception of these AI systems. Finally, recommendations for the use of AI in higher education are offered, which emphasize the need to harness AI's potential while mitigating its risks. This discourse aims at stimulating policy and strategy development to ensure relevant and effective education ...

The system enhances the equity traders' working environment with virtual charts and live business TV streams, overlaid onto the real trading workspace. The presented research investigates how human cognitive capabilities can be extended by the use of artificial computer-generated 3D representation of financial data and interaction with such data representation using hand gestures. We combined the nVisor ST50 headset with InteriaCube4 and Leap Motion devices to enable tracking of head orientation and controlling the AR environment with hands. With the use of hand gestures, a user is able to create virtual charts displaying real-time stock data and financial TV streams within his/her surroundings. To evaluate the system, we conducted experimental tests with 22 users. Our objective was to evaluate tasks completion times and users' experience while creating and parametrizing virtual stock charts through the AR interface. The obtained results are promising and demonstrate that most users were able to finish tasks in acceptable time without significant difficulties.

This also applies to the user interfaces of household appliances. However, realistic interactive presentation of user interfaces of such appliances in a virtual form remotely over the Internet is challenging. In this paper, we present and compare two different methods of interactive presentation of an oven touchscreen control panel. The panel was precisely recreated as an interactive 3D model, reflecting both its appearance and functionality. The system allows users to interact with the control panel using a mobile device touchscreen or hand movements in a virtual reality environment. We describe an experiment aimed at evaluating and comparing different forms of interaction to determine the benefits and barriers to the presentation of complex products in a virtual form for marketing purposes. Semantic Web services will enable easy categorization and retrieval of digital heritage resources. User-friendly online tools will simplify widespread citizen access. The system will function similarly to the music and movies P2P sharing networks, but will be based on a legal and self-sustaining business model offering users a possibility to present their own archaeological and historical collections, scientific documentation, field research notes, etc., as well as the creation of thematic presentations. The digital library resources collected and maintained by the users will be subsequently aggregated into virtual museums. Ideally, the community of users can grow almost without limit, as its new members bring both demand and supply.

Thus, combining VR and AR with the semantics arises as a significant trend in the development of the web. The use of the Semantic Web may improve creation, representation, indexing, searching, and processing of 3D web content by linking the content with formal and expressive descriptions of its meaning. Although several semantic approaches have been developed for 3D content, they are not explicitly linked to the available well-established 3D technologies, cover a limited set of 3D components and properties, and do not combine domain-specific and 3D-specific semantics. In this chapter, the authors present the background, concepts, and development of the Semantic Web3D approach. It enables ontology-based representation of 3D content and introduces a novel framework to p...

ARCO enables museum staff to create, manage and display virtual exhibitions of museum artifacts in rich 3D and multimedia forms. Such exhibitions can be accessed both internally within the museums and remotely over the Internet. Due to the use of a novel approach to building configurable virtual reality applications, called Flex-VR, virtual exhibitions in ARCO can be easily and quickly built by museum staff, even if they do not have experience in 3D design and programming. The chapter provides an overview of the ARCO system, a description of the virtual exhibition design process and examples of virtual exhibitions built with ARCO.

The 3D representation provides information about geographic and geometric properties of the units, while the matrix representation reveals temporal relationships between the units and layers. Dynamic creation of the 3D models provides a high level of flexibility allowing users to freely select data and adjust the method of visualisation.

The environment leverages the semantic web techniques and the SOA paradigm to enable ontology-based modeling of 3D objects and scenes in distributed web-based environments. The proposed solution combines visual and declarative approaches to 3D content creation. The possible use of various ontologies and knowledge bases permits modeling of content by users with different skills and at different levels of abstraction, thus significantly extending possible use of 3D on the web in various business scenarios.

Virtual and Augmented Reality for Configuring, Promoting and Servicing Household Appliances

The presented systems can support the wholesale of series of products configured and then ordered in a manufacturers’ showroom as well as individual sales by enabling customers to visualize different versions of the products in their home setting before making a purchase decision. The system provides also training and support for servicing of household appliances. The visualization software, created with the use of the Unity3D engine, takes advantage of a wide range of visualization hardware, such as a smartphone, an HMD, and a Powerwall, to enable its use in different settings. With the use of the developed solutions, users can configure and manipulate components of virtual home appliances directly in a 3D space. The visualization software, which has been developed in cooperation with Amica S.A. – a major household appliance manufacturer in Poland, can be an important marketing element and an innovation that has the potential to attract new customers.

Semantic representation of interactive 3D content gains increasing attention due to possibilities... more Semantic representation of interactive 3D content gains increasing attention due to possibilities of high-level domain-specific content description, inference of hidden knowledge as well as exploration of content on request with the use of semantic queries. However, the available approaches mostly address representation of static 3D objects and scenes, which do not evolve over time, thus disregarding the current state of dynamically changing content. The paper presents knowledge-based representation of 3D content behavior. The representation covers 3D content features at different points in time, enabling reasoning and exploration of dynamic content. The possibility of using different vocabularies enables application of the approach to different domains. The representation can extend the available static semantic 3D content representations, and it can be used together with 3D modeling tools and game engines. The proposed representation has been implemented in the Prolog declarative ...

Interactive 3D techniques offer a new quality in the design of user interfaces of computer applic... more Interactive 3D techniques offer a new quality in the design of user interfaces of computer applications, in particular when 3D applications are accessible remotely over the internet. A critical element for building practical 3D applications is adequate 3D synthetic content. However, designing high-quality interactive 3D content is a complex and challenging task. This difficulty is one of the major obstacles preventing widespread use of 3D techniques on the web in many promising application domains. In this paper, a new approach to 3D content creation is presented. The approach employs a range of techniques for simplification of the content creation process, but its main novelty lies in the fact that properly structured content can be created by communities of designers, regardless of whether they explicitly collaborate or not. Appropriate organization and consistency of the user-contributed content is enforced by the use of semantic web techniques with external domain ontologies. The presented approach is consistent both with the existing content creation pipelines and business models, aiming at enhancing and not replacing the current practices in digital content creation. A prototype of a tool for 3D content design implemented as an extension to the Unity IDE is also presented.

Semantic Contextual Personalization of Virtual Stores
Virtual stores and showrooms gain increasing attention in e-commerce, marketing and merchandising... more Virtual stores and showrooms gain increasing attention in e-commerce, marketing and merchandising to investigate customers’ behavior, preferences and the usefulness of shopping and exhibition spaces. Although virtual stores may be designed using numerous available 3D modeling tools and game engines, efficient methods and tools enabling development and personalization of virtual stores are still lacking. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to the development of personalizable contextual virtual stores that can be generated and configured on-demand, using interfaces based on semantic web technologies. A virtual store model is created as a combination of three elements: an exposition model, a collection of product models, and a virtual store configuration. The first element visually reflects an existing or imaginary 3D store layout. The second element contains 3D models of all products that can be presented in the exposition. The third element is an ontology, which connects the ...
