The Poynton Probus Club provides opportunities for retired and semi-retired men for new friendships and discussion at lunches and other social gatherings. Membership is open to all men regardless of race, colour or creed.
Similar self-sufficient clubs are run throughout the UK and in many other countries around the world. The word Probus is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness but covers a wide range of occupations.
Engaging talks
We hold regular meetings at St George’s Church Hall in Poynton town centre at 2pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of a month. These begin with a stimulating talk by an invited speaker. Their subjects can cover any topic from the serious to the light hearted, and the mysterious to the historical, or to the adventurous. The current bookings of meetings and speakers are on the Programme of Meetings page.
We then break for tea/coffee and socialising, after which we reconvene to discuss future events and programme, any local events or issues of interest to Members as well as news of any members who may be ill or needing support, since we try to be mutually supportive at all times.
Lunches
We also have informal, monthly pub lunches for Members to socialise.
ln addition, we also have occasional Restaurant Lunches to which wives, partners and guests are welcome, as well as Associates (widows of past members). Support is given for those who have a mobility issue or serious illness.
Group Walks
We have a Walking Group of Members for monthly, level country routes, followed by a pub lunch both for the walkers and visiting Members. Ladies would be welcome to both events.
New Members
We would be pleased to welcome any potential new Members living in Poynton and beyond. Anyone interested is welcome to come along to two meetings as ‘tasters’ before deciding whether to join our club. For further information please contact Peter Owen
